Celtic Music: Patrick Street

It All Started with Legends of Irish Music

Patrick Street began as a one-time tour called Legends of Irish Music. It was made up of Kevin Burke, who had played fiddle in the Bothy Band, Andy Irvine, who had played bouzouki and sang with Planxty, accordion player Jackie Daly, who had played in De Dannan, and master guitarist Arty McGlynn. The tour was a success, and the group released an album called Patrick Street.

A Part-Time Schedule Keeps the Sound Fresh

The name Patrick Street, which after the first album became the name of the band, is taken from a common street name in Ireland. From the start, the band members have considered the band a part-time thing, coming together for about three months a year, leaving the rest of the year for solo or other group work. This part-time status also has the effect of keeping the playing fresh as band members incorporate other influences.

Burke, Irvine and Daly have been the core of the band since 1986. Other musicians who have been a part of Patrick Street include guitarists Gerry O'Beirne, fiddler James Kelly, and uillean piper Declan Masterson.

Arty McGlynn left the group in 1996 and was replaced by guitarist Ged (prounounced "Jed") Foley, who has performed with Scotland's Battlefield Band and England's House Band.

A recent addition to Patrick Street is John Carty, known for his sensational fiddle playing. He will also be adding his talents on banjo, flute and tenor guitar.
