Celtic Punk Rock Lives On!

Like celtic music?  Like punk music?  Have you tried celtic punk?  Also known as paddypunk and kiltrock, celtic punk rock combines the best of both worlds.  Thrash worthy tunes with traditional Irish lyrics or bagpipes as backup.    This lens is a great place to get started.

Great Celtic Punk Websites

These sites feature celtic punk reviews, previews, articles, and more!
BandVox
I built BandVox to review and showcase some of the best bands in the celtic punk genre. I also extend a bit outside the genre to include drinking and folk music, and cross genre bands. Each band has their own page with bios and reviews- just click on "CD Reviews" for the list.
Shite 'n Onions
Reviews, videos, band cds as well as mix cds made by Shite 'n Onions, tour information, and more.
PaddyRock.com
Reviews, cds, festival info, interviews, etc.

Bands You May Not Have Heard Of

But should

Icewagon Flu
This website actually has a virtual i-pod with several songs from their new cd. It's a great way to test drive new music.
Ceann
Not punk per se, but popular drinking/pub music with a celtic bent. Incredibly funny, but probably not for those who haven't had "the talk" yet.
JD and the Longfellows
Also drinking/pub music- inspires drunken dancing and a good laugh to those sober enough to hear the lyrics.
The Larkin Brigade
Best described as insane. However, the music is a trip and runs from political motivation to zombies in pubs.
Black 47
This band is insanely popular, and quite prolific.

Celtic Punk On MySpace

BandVox
BandVox's MySpace page- some of the best bands and stations are listed in my Top Friends list.
Icewagon Flu
These guys seem to be "online" more than they play!
JD and the Longfellows
Fantastic band, though with a little bit of a bluegrass/country influence.
The Larkin Brigade
These guys are a bit odd, but awesome.

Are You A Traditionalist?

There's a lot of crossover between traditional Celtic music and Celtic Punk/Celtic Rock, both in the bands themselves and the fans. So what do you think?

Do you think Celtic Rock/Punk is just as Celtic as the traditional Celtic music?

Absolutely!

No way!

Celtic Punk Rock Playlist

I can't get the entire playlist window to show here, but if you click "Pop-Out Player", it will open a window with select songs on a playlist so you can check out some of the music before committing to buying a cd.

Celtic Punk Rock Radio Stations

A Great Way To Check Out The Genre

I mostly listen to Celtic Punk Rock on Live365. Most stations are free, though I do have a VIP account, so they're all available to me. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying all of your favorite bands' cds when they come out!

Shite 'n Onions: This is my personal favorite and the station that I discovered most of my favorite bands from. Unfortunately, it's now VIP only.

Radio Rebel Gael: An excellent station, but the owner tends to get a bit vehement on politics, though mostly the politics in Ireland. So if you don't mind your music interrupted by the occasional rant, this is a good station to start with. Again, since the government increased taxes on internet radio stations, Radio Rebel Gael is also VIP only.

Angry Young and Poor: Punk, but not actually celtic punk. This station is owned by a shop a few miles from my house that sells some great clothes, music, etc. Unfortunately, again, this is VIP only.

About BandVox

Currently BandVox is one person- me. As such, I don't have as much time as I would like to devote to listening to great music and writing about it.

So, while you wait for my next piece of brilliant reviewership, check out my friend's review of Bill Mumy's new cd.
