Flowers & Centerpieces for Weddings - Neighborhood Angel

Hello Everyone! I'm Mandee, a Giant at Squidoo and recently named your Cruise Director for the journey through the Squidoo Topic section: Weddings --> Wedding Flowers and Centerpieces.

After having perused the category, I have found that the lensmaster crew staffing this section may want to "Spiff" things up a bit in order to attract more internet and Squidoo traffic which could translate into more income.

Follow along as I layout some suggestions, quick fixes and point you to other in-depth advice lenses available from successful lensmasters about how to marry quality content and credibility to increase your income at Squidoo -- and particularly in the Wedding Flowers and Centerpieces sub-topic.

As well, I am tying in the guidelines I use when blessing lenses in this area. If that's not important to you -- no problem. Having the best possible chance at increasing your online income should be reason enough to follow along.

Here we go!
Important!

Your Bio is #1

Fill out your Bio! Let me say this again... Fill out your BIO!

Why should I fill out my Bio?

I just want $, no one cares who I am!

Who are you & why should I trust you?

Wrong!
Your readers want to know who you are and how you can help them and why they should trust what you write.

Filling out your bio is an important step in creating your online credibility. Potential customers ask themselves:
  • Why should I buy from you (through your links)?
  • Is this article just a bunch of links, or do I actually learn something from someone that knows?
  • What is your experience in this field?

You have to be prepared for these questions - answer them before the customer asks them -- otherwise they leave your page never to return.

From an SEO prospective, your bio gives you another opportunity to use your chosen keywords. This helps your credibility with search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing.

Ideally, you fill out a standard bio in the "Profile" section on your dashboard. Then, with each lens you create, add a sentence or three as a lead-in about your subject using some of your keywords -- you customize your bio to each lens this way and increase the visibility of your lens.

At the very least, you need a bio -- a few words about yourself, experience or expertise -- in your default bio on the dashboard. Leaving the:

"Hello World. This is my bio. I can edit it later."

is just plain lazy and suggests you aren't serious about earning an income and/or helping others with your writing of lenses.

How to make a Custom Bio
for each lens...

Step 1 - From inside the workshop editor of any lens, click on the "Lens Bio" arrow. It will drop open a screen like that pictured.

Step 2 - Click on the "Custom Bio" radio button. Start typing in the box below it -- relevant info to your lens topic, being sure to add some of your keywords -- but don't stuff! You can also add some html, links to a blog or website, etc...

Step 3 - Click the "Save" Button.

All done in like 30 seconds! Just remember, this comes across as more professional, which = credibility. :D

I won't bless lenses that don't have a bio of some sort. If you can't take a moment to tell me who you are, why should I take a moment to read what you have to say? This may not matter to you -- that's fine. I just thought I should be upfront about it as the Neighborhood Angel.

My Photo

Is this you?

Again, you are trying to gain credibility in the field or area of weddings. If a Google searcher comes to your page, what are they going to see where your picture goes?
  • A big X in a gray box?
  • A cutesy avatar?
  • Your smiling mug?

Remember the old saying: "A picture is worth a thousand words"? Take it to heart.

While I personally prefer to put a face to a name, I do understand privacy and some people don't want their photo all over the net. The next best thing is an avatar that represents you in a positive manner.

Bottom line is, include a photo or avatar so your reader can put a picture with your lens. Credibility...

Edit your default photo/avatar in the dashboard under the "Profile" tab. Or, you can also do it from any lens workshop by clicking the "My Photo" arrow and choosing a file from your computer.
Again, 30 seconds is all it takes.

Your Introduction Opportunity

When opportunity knocks, ANSWER!

Your introduction is key. The new Squidoo guidelines state that the intro needs to be 200 (non-html) characters, minimum.

Use this opportunity to introduce your subject and add the researched keywords you are hoping to cash in on with the search engines. It really doesn't take that much to come up with 200 characters. This module is 342 characters.

Knock, Knock...

Who's there...

Opportunity! Use me!

Content is King!

Mix up your sales links with some helpful info...

Sales lenses obviously have a place here at Squidoo or more than half the lensmaster wouldn't be here. However, Google loves content -- unique and fresh. They are making it harder, slowly but surely, on spammers that simply throw up a lot of links and call it content.

Adding your personal reviews or suggestions with products will go along way towards building credibility too.

What we need to remember here is, you are writing for the reader. You don't have to write a book. A line or two about a product or a personal recommendation go a long way with them. Mix up your modules. Add some interactive content like a Duel, Prediction, Poll, or Quiz. Get your reader involved and they are more likely to stay and maybe buy...
Important!

Change Defaults...

Change the title defaults on all your modules. This is a perfect time to add some more of your keywords to a "weighted" area of your lens. The defaults are just there so you know what modules you have included -- they were not meant to be the permanent titles. It only takes a few seconds to change the title to something more appropriate for your subject -- go for it!

Quality Content + Strategy = Make Money on Squidoo!

Yes, marry these ideas and it can be done. Not overnight but a nice passive income for time to come. When you are making a lens you have to be 4 people, minimum -- writer, reader, marketer and SEO specialist. You have to look at the "big picture" if you want to be successful.

  • 1A bio. Take 30 seconds and fill out a custom bio for each lens. Between building credibility with your reader and the SEO benefits, you just can't lose.
  • 2Use a Photo or Avatar. Association is a big way people remember things. Again, it takes 30 seconds to upload a photo. Readers are going to be more inclined to trust a face than a big blank box.
    Go! Do it!
  • 3Minimum, 200 word introduction. Tell your reader what your lens is about; what problem are you going to help them solve; what they will learn; why you are a good person to teach them. You choose and don't forget to add your keywords!
  • 4Change default titles. They are meant as guides not permanent titles and subtitles. Leaving them default sends a message that you didn't care to spend a minute or two cleaning things up for your reader.
  • 5Content - I need something. Just of list of products or links is not going to hold my attention. Follow through on your introduction promise. You don't have to write chapters but throw in the facts, figures, and reasons with your call to action.
  • 6Check for grammatical and spelling errors. No one is perfect but re-read what you write with this in mind. It is irritating to a reader to have a lensmaster telling them they are trustworthy and credible when their work is riddled with obvious spelling errors or grammar problems.

i.e. - you're is the contraction for "you are" - "your" is possessive of "you"

My brain gets ahead of my fingers sometimes. Thankfully, I have a wonderful lensmaster friend that proofreads for me! Thanks Pat!

Use a browser or word processor spell-checker as you write or post.
  • 7Give credit where due. Images, quotes or a snippet of text should contain a credit/link for the source. No need to credit affiliate links/graphics but anything else should be credited.

This is a good time to mention plagiarism - don't do it. Simple. Passing off someone else's work or content as your own is against the law. Surely you can say something similar in your own words... If not, you should consider a different line of work.
  • 8Lastly, though not a criteria for blessings, learn Squidoo from those that know it. Squidoo lensmasters are very open, caring and sharing people. Ask questions at Squid U, send a message to a lensmaster you admire asking for advice, join one of the groups around the net dedicated to making you a better, more profitable lensmaster like Squidlog.
