Does your small dog walk all over you?
But is that the best way to treat your dog?
Leading animal expert and dog trainer Cesar Millan says no! By ignoring the fact that our dogs are CANINES first and foremost, we're missing out on meeting many of their needs. Especially the need to be a follower in a pack. By letting our toy dog dominate and control the household, we encourage obnoxious behavior, anti-social attitudes and even dangerous practices - like the small dog challenging a big one.
It's really hard, but time to stop babying our small dogs and creating little monsters. Cesar Millan shows us how.
Small Dog Syndrome Symptoms
It's not about an outgoing dog

Symptoms of small dog syndrome include:
- trying to dominate you: your dog jumps up on your, or jumps up on your lap when you don't want him to; he insists on sleeping on your bed, on or near the pillow; he tries to eat off your plate
- too aggressive with other dogs: your dog is always "on the attack" and seems to want to fight. She lunges at other dogs, barks and raises her hackles at them.
- whiny, yapping, barking too much: like a spoiled child, your dog is likely whining for attention, and demanding that you do what he wants - NOW!
- destructive behavior: your dog rips up papers, clothes, anything on the ground.... she pees and poops all over the house, scratches door frames and more.
Other dominant behaviors include being very stubborn, headstrong and willful.
A demanding nature, pushiness, begging, nudging to be patted, pushing a toy into your hand to play, getting up on a high place to watch everything, guarding or protecting you from other people approaching you and an almost obsessive, focused way of licking you.

When you're not the pack leader - issues happen
Even small dogs need strong, calm leadership
If a dog doesn't trust its owner to be a strong, stable pack leader, it becomes unclear about its correct role within the pack.A dog that is confused about who is in charge is actually concerned about the ability of the pack to survive, so it attempts to fill in the missing leadership elements, often erratically.
When you're not the stable pack leader, this can cause:
- aggression,
- anxiety,
- fear,
- obsessions,
- or phobias - .....what Cesar Millan calls "issues". Learn to be your dog's Pack Leader. Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan can show you how.
Cesar Millan crushes Small Dog Syndrome
Famed trainer bases his program on 3 activities
First: exercise your dog plenty. A tired dog is a happy dog. Cesar recommends a one-hour walk every day. And the walk should be on YOUR terms as the owner, not a rambling, let's-sniff-every-bush kind of dog walk.
Second: discipline. This means teaching your dog new things, reinforcing good behavior and modifying bad behavior. Discipline means giving a dog rules, boundaries, and limitations in a non-abusive way.
Third: affection. This is the reward we give to our dogs and to ourselves, but only after the dog has achieved calm submission in our "pack".
"Today, too many of us skip the exercise and discipline and just treat our dogs like toys to be played with... it's unhealthy for the dog and will lead to on-going frustration and disappointment."

Cesar Millan's formula for success
How to conquer small dog syndrome
Our goal: a balanced dog
What defines a balanced dog?
Cesar Millan says:A balanced dog is in the state Mother Nature wants it to be in - as a calm-submissive pack follower, who is fulfilled physically with exercise; psychologically with rules, boundaries, and limitations; and emotionally with affection from its owner.
Balance is achieved through a three part program with your dog: first, plenty of exercise. Second, set boundaries and rules and enforce them, in a calm assertive way. Never use the old-school 'dominate my dog' tactics like turning him over on his back and staring into his eyes. Third, Once your dog is in a calm-submissive state, you can both enjoy affection.

Remember, dogs communicate differently
Nose, eyes, ears
Cesar Millan reminds us that dogs communicate very differently from their owners.Their focus? Nose, eyes, ears - in that order!
Dogs see the world differently from the way we do. We communicate using our ears first, then our eyes, and lastly our nose. Dogs begin with the nose, then the eyes, and lastly the ears. Allowing a dog to experience our scent before we engage it in eye contact or speak to it is one way to establish trust early on.

You need to exude calm-assertive energy - your dog, calm-submissive

- I love Cesar Millan, and you did a wonderful job of highlighting his techniques and philosophy. We watched him on tv last year and he really helped us change the way that we treated our dogs, both the large ones and the small ones. Great lens!

- I am so sad that I do not love my toy poodle anymore. I am scared of her because she growls and bites me when I try to pick her up or approach her. She is getting worse. She has all of the traits of the small dog syndrome. I know it is our fault, but because she is so well trained in most ways it crept up on us. It hurts to get bitten and she is so quick. I have tried everything.
