Cessna Enters the Light Sport Aircraft Market

Cessna has delivered more aircraft than any other manufacturer in history: 190,000 and still counting. Because of higher costs and a downturn in the economy, the number of people flying has dropped. Cessna decided to make a bold move and design an all new aircraft to help spark interest in flying. The Cessna Skycatcher is their answer.

The Skycatcher is a member of a new category of aircraft; known as Light Sport Aircraft. The FAA instituted the LSA category in 2005. These are small, simple aircraft with special weight and performance limits. These aircraft do not require a medical certificate, only a valid drivers licence to fly. And the maintenance requirements are relaxed. This category was created to open up the world of aviation to more people by making it simpler and more affordable.

Cessna has put the Skycatcher through testing that far exceeds the requirements of the LSA category. Bringing it to the top of the list with regard to safety and engineering prowess.
