HERE'S WHAT I THINK

CFLs are better than incandescents

Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs are superior to traditional incandescent light bulbs in a myriad of ways.

The Compact Fluorescent Lightbulb

My reasoning

They save money for 2 reasons
1. They use less energy. A 13 Watt CFL produces just as much light as a 60 Watt bulb, so you can expect a 75% reduction in cost due to lighting.

2. They last longer, needing less replacements. A typical lifetime for a CFL is about 15 times longer than your normal bulb. (~800 Vs. 11000 hours)

They're better for the environment
1. By using less electricity, CFLs are responsible for a reduction of greenhouse gases. Because most electricity comes from fossil fuels, every kilowatt-hour emits CO2, heavy metals, particulates, SOx, NOx, and a bunch of other bad things into our atmosphere.

2. CFLs actually release less Mercury into the environment than traditional bulbs. Because burning coal produces an awful lot of Hg, several years of running lightbulbs can account for a lot of emissions. By using only 1/4 the energy of regular bulbs, CFLs are responsible for 1/4 of the Mercury emissions. Over the lifetime of a bulb, these savings more than make up for the 5 mg found inside CFLs.

Yes, you're right!

I prefer the light from incandescent. But CFLs are better for the environment, last longer and cost less. So it's CFLs for me, especially the soft light ones.

WhitneyWells says:

I have CFL's throughout my house and save $$$ every month.

JasonE says:

I agree, plus they generate less heat, which can give your air conditioner a break in smaller rooms with a lot of lights in them.

fefe says:

of course!

lisadh says:

No doubt about it - CFLs win!

-Jeff- says:

They save electricity and look cooler.

No way, Monkeybrain!

xtnshun says:

I think there is a conspiracy here. I have never had a cfl last 11000 hours! I'm not saying incandescents should come back, but I get the impression a lot of money was spent developing cfls and alternatives were'nt really considered.
