The art of caning furniture first originated in India in the state of Gujarat by the Popat Family. The business expanded to Bombay, when their daughter Ruma Popat was married off as a trade alliance to the then Commissioner General of Bombay in 1934. The young Ms Ruma Popat was said to have brought her own handmade cane furniture from Gujarat. Ruma-Cane furnitures soon began exporting to the middle east, Africa and the United States of America.
