The Complete Guide to Chair Caning: Restoring Cane

Best of all, with the help of a thorough basics chapter, reader-friendly instructions, and a plethora of illuminating color photographs, even beginners can complete every beautiful item. Find out how to use machine-made caning to restore an old chair, or create an entirely new one by hand. Fashion a durable and comfortable rush seat, using fiber that's twisted into long strands, or create a traditional splint-caned porch rocker. There's invaluable information on the different types of available cane, various woven patterns, and interesting rattan wraps.
The art of caning furniture first originated in India in the state of Gujarat by the Popat Family. The business expanded to Bombay, when their daughter Ruma Popat was married off as a trade alliance to the then Commissioner General of Bombay in 1934. The young Ms Ruma Popat was said to have brought her own handmade cane furniture from Gujarat. The furniture became an instant hit with the English in Bombay and export discussions were already underway within the first month of her arrival to her new home. Due to the rise in demand, the factories moved from Gujarat to Mumbai and were newly named Ruma-Cane Furnitures. Ruma-Cane furnitures soon began exporting to the middle east, Africa and the United States of America.
