How To Choose A Chair For The Office

Choosing a chair for the office seems simple enough doesn't it? Well, provided you avoid some common mistakes it is pretty straightforward.

Your office chair is very important for the health and wellbeing of your body, after all you likely going to spend many hours sitting in it and it's vital that it supports you properly and is comfortable in use.

Many people buy a chair for the office based solely on price, this is a big mistake. Cheap chairs are highly likely to be ergonomically badly designed, uncomfortable and just not good for the health of your body.

Another mistake people make is buying a chair for the office just because it looks good, or has a super high back or says it is ergonomic. What matters is what's right for you.

If you're buying a new office desk at the same time as a chair for the office, make sure that your first consideration is getting the right chair sorted out first. Yes, it's great to have a designer desk and provided your budget allows go ahead and buy it. However, if money is tight consider buying the chair first and replacing your desk later when funds permit.

Pneumatic Height Adjustment

Nearly all office chairs include pneumatic gas lift height adjustment, so you just need to sure that the height range is suitable for you.

As a quick guide, stand up and measure the distance from the floor to the inside of your knee joint. Provided the seat has some adjustment either side of this measurement you should be fine.

Seat Depth Adjustment

Ideally, you want to have a seat that allows you to adjust the seat depth to suit your leg length. Now, if you are of average height you might just be able to do without sliding seat depth adjustment.

However, if you are over or under average height you really should include this feature.

Height Adjustable Back

The chair back height needs to be adjustable to give you good support for your lower back. Avoid chairs that have excessive foam lumbar supports as they're more likely to be uncomfortable than beneficial.

Height Adjustable Arms

Whist not essential, it's a good thing to be able to adjust the arm height to suit your own needs. When correctly set your arms should form an approximate right angle to your body and rest easily on the chair armrests.

Seat Tension Adjustment

A good quality office chair allows the user to adjust the chair's tension so that you can set it up to suit your weight. When correctly set you should be able to move backwards and forwards easily in your chair.

If you don't like arms on your office seat just make sure you support your lower arms on your desk if possible.

If you take these points into consideration you should be able to select a chair that will give you many years of good service.
