Chairman Meow comes to visit

Meet the Chairman
Chairman Meow is not my cat, he's just visiting while my son takes a tour around Europe ... at least, that's the theory.
I expect Chairman to be here for a few months at least, as my son will also be finding a new flat to live in (in Edinburgh) when he comes back from his tour and, if there should be a 'no pets' rule where he next lives then Chairman could be here for some time. I hope my son can take him to his new flat as it's clear that Chairman is missing him, though he's also beginning to be a bit more comfortable in my home.
He has been living with me now for about three weeks and is very much an indoor cat, having lived in the city all his life. He's curious about the outdoors here, surrounded by woodlands as we are, but his only experience of being "out there" when he was younger was rather traumatic.
He fell from a window and went missing for a couple of months. When he was found it was because he had been injured and taken to a vet who scanned the chip he carries and contacted Chairman's (then) owner. Fortunately there was pet insurance available to have him mended after considerable injury and he was returned to his owner for recovery.
Chairman has moved around quite a bit since then but for the last couple of years, my son has looked after him and Chairman has become very attached. So, their's was not a relationship born of choice really but one which grew and grew. Before leaving for his European trip, my son brought Chairman up to stay with me so that he could be sure the cat would be looked after in his absence.

The Chairman is a Fat Cat
Chairman wasn't impressed when I suggested he could incubate penguins eggs under there but he has been on something of a diet since arriving at my home and I hope to have him back in shape before my son collects him.
There are some oddities about Chairman. How many cats have you known who will turn their noses up at a piece of real meat? Chairman does. He prefers to eat dried food and he's very fussy about it. It must be good quality and no fish, Chairman will not eat anything fishy.
He's fussy about his water too. He won't drink from the neat little stainless steel bowl I have for him, he much prefers to drink the water from the big saucer under my sitting room tree. I shouldn't be surprised, I've had cats before and every one of them had strange little foibles, like Sam who stole mushrooms and Pangur Ban who loved cucumber. Cats can be very strange.

Chairman has taken over my son's bed, probably because there will be traces of his smell on the sheets etc. By the time my son gets home he may have to fight the cat for the bedding. Chairman's day begins when he gets out of bed.
Arriving at the office
He can open the sitting room door himself. It didn't take him to long to work out how but some of his early attempts were hilarious though unfortunately not recorded for posterity. Even though the kitchen door has the same kind of handle, for some strange reason he doesn't seem to know he can open it ... or is it that he knows he needs someone else to get the food down?
The working day
Like most executives, Chairman's day begins by opening the mail, preferably in private.
Then, like most executives, he shreds the mail he doesn't want anyone else to see.
After dealing with the mail, Chairman will have a read of the newspaper and then it could be time for lunch.

A lunchtime drink
After eating his Go-Cat, Chairman walks straight past his little dish of clean, fresh water and trots over to drink from the saucer of water under my tree. He's lucky, I never feed this tree as it grows well enough without feeding. It's a weeping fig - supposed to be poisonous to cats - and it's a happy tree as long as its feet are standing in water.
Training to be a long cat
I've noticed he is much more playful since a little weight starting shifting off him. He's not yet four years old so really should still play quite a bit instead of laying around panting for breath like an old man.

The more he plays and exercises, the better the diet will work and the better shape he'll be in. He's a beautiful cat with soft, silky fur. A British Shorthair, I believe, also perhaps know to some as a European Shorthair. Do you think he might make it as a long cat?
The photo is taken just outside the bathroom door, where his litter tray is located. I swear he sits in the loo flicking the bits of cat litter out into the hallway but I've never actually caught him doing it.
Ensuring the World runs smoothly
I guess that's not surprising really considering his earlier bad experience of the big outdoors but it's very different here from a city. I live in a small village.
Of course, I'm not upset that he shows no interest in going outside. I like the birds in my garden and there wouldn't be any chance of controlling his diet if he did go out. It also means that I don't have to worry about fleas and ticks coming into the house on his dense fur.
Naturally, if he really does want to go out, I won't stop him, that would be unfair but I'm not expecting his attitude to change in the time he's with me.
It does mean that he must exercise in the home every day though and it's not always easy to encourage him to do so. To help him along I made a simple toy by making a loose knot at one end of a piece of twine and dangling it from a stick.Initially, Chairman played for a couple of minutes and not very energetically but he's gradually lengthening playtime and becoming much more enthusiastic about it.
Chairman has his own bunch of executive toys which have also taken up residence in the hallway ... I think he has designated that as the gym.
Time for dinner
He also has a fine singing voice although I'm not sure who wrote that music, perhaps it's some kind of jazz, yeah, cats.
This is his third small meal of the day and there will be one more to come late in the evening. I do think the smaller, more frequent meals are 're-educating' his stomach and eventually less food will make him feel fuller. Then I can work on cutting the number of meals to fit with when my son is out at work during the day.
And so to bed
As well as all that, Chairman found time to pose for some photos for his adoring public. It has been a busy day and Chairman is quite tired out with all the work. He also has still to figure out who or what the strange creature in the vivarium is. Chairman has never met a bearded dragon before and, since Fluffy's previous owner had a dog which Fluffy used to boss around, the strange little creature isn't scared of Chairman, in fact it seems Chairman is very wary of Fluffy.
And so, it's time for Chairman to trot off to bed again. He'll wake in the morning, around half past seven, ready to start a new day and more than ready for breakfast. I'm not sure that I will ever get used to being serenaded by Chairman at 7.30 am but I've put up with worse things in the past.
Night night Chairman.

- Greetings Chairman Meow,
I'm Missy the cat from Downunder, and I share your dispassion for fish...but not raw meat...I love it...but it must be the special 'cat' variety. And cat biscuits?...Bring them on!...and totally forget the 'canned muck' - I simply refuse to go there!
Happy mousing or moosing in your hoose in Scotland!

- What a fun lens and it was so great to meet Chairman. I think your son may have a hard time getting him to leave you. He seems to be perfectly content with his new surroundings. I sure enjoyed my visit and am going to feature this lens on my latest about my challenge to rate 10,000 lenses before July 18.
