What is a chaise lounge?

The term "chaise lounge" is derived from the French "Chaise longue," meaning "long chair." The French term refers to an upholstered couch in the shape of a chair long enough to support the legs. Variations on this theme include the duchesse brisée, which resembles a sideways-facing chair with a long footstool, and the récamier, a chaise longue with a backrest on both ends.

More About Chaise Lounges

18th century version of a chaise longueEarly versions of the chaise lounge resemble the 18th-century rococo-style chaise longue shown at right. The modern American spelling, "Chaise lounge," is the result of an old error that began showing up in American literature as early as the 1850s. This spelling is now so accepted in America that many dictionaries of American English refer to it this way. Many scholars of etymology will hold this up as an example of folk etymology, people changing the spelling and/or meaning of a foreign word to suit their purposes.

Modern chaise lounges range in style, including traditional, modern, and outdoor versions. Prices can vary widely depending on model and even where you shop. So be sure to do some comparison shopping either online or at local brick-and-mortar stores if you're considering buying a chaise lounge for your home.
