The Wonderful World of 3D Chalk Art

Welcome to some awesome examples of 3D Chalk Art.

3D chalk art is created using a projection technique called anamorphosis. When viewed from a particular angle, this technique creates the illusion of 3D - in a most effective way. When viewed from the wrong angle, it looks like crap. I think this is a pretty amazing art form created with only a packet of chalk. From the imagination comes some wonderful things.

That laptop by the way, isn't really there...it's chalk.

1) Riverstreet River Waterfall - Edgar Mueller

type=text

Edgar Mueller was born in Mülheim, Germany and developed a fascination with painting at an early age. He won his first street painting competition at age 19 and eventually earned the title of Master Street Painter.

The street painting seen below was around 280 m² which is Edgar Mueller's largest project. The painting was done for Prairie Art Festival in Moose Jaw, Canada. The street actually had the name of "River Street".

Nearly 1000 Square feet, this Mural takes up an entire block.

2) The Dungeon - JuIian Beever

type=text

A piece by Juilan Beever. Julian is also known as the "Pavement Picasso."

3) Lava - Edgar Mueller

type=text

Edgar Mueller completed this chaotic fiery piece in Geldern, Germany. It was drawn for the anniversary of an international street painting contest.

4) The Well - Julian Beever

type=text

Julian Beever has been drawing for over 20 years. He has been creating 3D street art for the last 10 years.

5) The Waterfall - Edgar Mueller

type=text

The incredible artwork below was created for the Tepli-Stan Mega Mall in Moscow, Russia. It gives me vertigo just looking at it.

6) Batman and Robin - Julian Beever

type=text

No they won't save you... The only thing that's real here is the man and the wall.

7) Slovenia Cave - Edgar Mueller

type=text

Edgar Mueller's third cave project shown here can be found in Ptuj, Slovenia. The mural was completed in four days right in time for the Culture Festival.

8) Dies Irae - Kurt Wenner

type=text

Kurt Wenner is a Master Artist and Master Architect famous for inventing three-dimensional pastel drawings. Also known as: 3D Street Painting, 3D Pavement Art, 3D Chalk Art, or 3D Sidewalk Art, they are a form of anamorphic art.

This amazing street painting, called Dies Irae, was created by Kurt Wenner in a medieval town square in Italy.

9) Two Worlds - Julian Beever

type=text

Another piece by Julian Beever.

10) Emergence Day 2006 - Kurt Wenner

type=text

The orks are emerging from the center of the earth...I love this one. Gothicly scary.

11) Eiffel Tower - Julian Beever

type=text

He looks like a tiny miniature man...

12) The Stairs - Julian Beever

type=text

The secret to 3D chalk art is to set up a camera on a tripod and keep it in one spot and check every mark you make. It's really just playing with perspective to make it appear different to what it really is.

13) Scotch Skyscraper - Julian Beever

type=text

Another example of 3D chalk art by Juilan Beever.

14) Cityscape - Julian Beever

type=text

Juilan humorously plays up his illusions in a variety of ways. He interacts with the finished project itself, making it come to life. His intentions of creating his art are for his own personal enjoyment, but also to shock and awe his crowd into believing they're seeing something that isn't there.

15) Fishing in Old Shanghai - Kurt Wenner

type=text

I find this piece both intricate and beautiful. It would have to be another one of my favorites.

16) Coke - Julian Beever

type=text

Now that's a big bottle of Coke..

17a) Sky Comp - Kurt Wenner

type=text

This is Sky Comp viewed from the correct angle....

17b) Sky Comp - Kurt Wenner

type=text

And from the wrong angle...This is an example of how uneffective anamorphic 3D chalk art looks like when you're not standing in the right spot.

18) Lava Pothole - Julian Beever

type=text

I hope none of these people fall in.

19) Jaws - Julian Beever

type=text

I love how 3D chalk art comes to new levels of life when it's interacted with.

20) Ice - Edgar Mueller

type=text

I'm getting vertigo again...

21) River Rafting - Julian Beever

type=text

Another realistic looking piece by Juilan Beever. He sure looks like he has fun with his art!

22) The Rescue - Julian Beever

type=text

This 3D chalk drawing is effectively veiwed upside down...(just to boggle the mind a little more..)

23) Ballantyne - Juilan Beever

type=text

Drink anyone?....

24) Newt - Julian Beever

type=text

No water, no lillypads, no newt. Nothing's real here except the child and the fishing rod. Love the imagination!

And saving the best for last....(we'll it's my favorite anyway).

25) The Caverns - Edgar Mueller

type=text

Another Edgar Mueller masterpeice. This one would have to be my favorite.
