I have always loved chalkboards! I'm not sure why, but in this world of technology, chalkboards remind me of a simpler way of life -- a vintage idea. If you are in need of ideas for vintage weddings then consider using chalkboards for wedding decor.

A chalkboard can give a vintage, retro or rustic feel to your event. Whether your chosen theme is vintage travel, vintage garden, rustic country or Americana, incorporating chalkboards into your decor plan will add the charm you seek!

Chalkboards for Wedding Decor

This unfinished wood framed chalkboard has a multitude of possibilities for your wedding. It is 5" x 7" and can be used vertically or horizontally.

Simply paint or stain the frame in your color choice (taking care to use painters tape to protect the writing area), and allow to dry completely. Prop it against something or use a plate holder to stand it up.

Welcome your guests or point them in the proper direction right from the beginning -- the entrance. A few options might include:

A large chalkboard framed from an old picture frame. Search thrift shops, estate sales, garage sales and the like to find a large vintage or rustic frame that will suit your theme and message needs. Write something like:

Don't forget, round or oval frames (like old mirror frames) make it visually interesting too!

If you can't find a chalkboard in the correct shape, cut out a piece of wood and then paint it with chalkboard paint. Allow to dry completely before you attempt to write on it. A 2 to 3 day "curing" time is great for best results.

Eco Friendly Ideas for Vintage Wedding

The Escort Card Table or Place Cards at each table is a fun place to use mini chalkboards. Guests can keep them as a favor gift as well. Consider decorating them to go along with your theme.

For instance, if you are using a Vintage Garden theme, you could:
  1. Name your tables after flowers you might find in the garden and write them on a chalkboard you place on the table
  2. Use things like mini flower pots with chalkboard area to write names or table names/numbers
  3. Use plant name chalkboard sticks on your escort card table. Place the sticks in long narrow containers of grass, herbs or low lying flowers (in alphabetical order of course)


For other themes, use the same ideas but different products like shaped mini chalkboards, or embellish your mini chalkboards with jewels, colors or other trinkets to bring in your theme.

Use Chalkboards Anywhere

Wedding Chalkboards

Chalkboards are very versatile and can be used almost anywhere to add to your decor. How many ideas can you come up with to use chalkboards?
  1. At an outdoor wedding ceremony and/or reception, use chalkboards are directional signs. Make a frame from old barn wood and paint a piece of plywood with chalkboard paint. Write your message to your guests and display on an easel, leaned against a tree, nailed to a tree, leaned on a wooden ladder or in a wheel barrow or attached to a wooden fence post.
  2. Keeping green wedding ideas in mind, skip escort cards completely and use one large or a series of small framed chalkboards as a seating chart. Write the names in alphabetical order so guests can see at which table they are seated.
  3. Use them as table name or number identifiers. Flower pots, figurines with chalkboards, chalkboard stickers mounted on foam board, get creative with this idea! Build your own unique table number or name holder using a chalkboard.
  4. Use a chalkboard in place of a guest book. Be careful not to smudge!
  5. Use a chalkboard as a menu for your guests. If you are having a buffet, use mini chalkboards to identify the foods. Use them on a dessert or candy buffet too!
  6. Place a chalkboard at the ceremony entrance and write your program on it. Again, green wedding idea -- Save the Trees!
  7. Set various sized and shaped, framed and unframed chalkboards around your reception as labels for things like the guestbook table, a special family table, incorporate them with love quotes in your centerpieces like "All my tomorrows belong to you" or "How sweet it is to be loved by you".
  8. Having a Candy Buffet? Use chalkboard tags or on a stick to identify the candy!

    I never thought of chalkboards for a wedding, but it's a nice idea! I love chalkboard paint, you can do anything with it! A nice idea for a wedding might be to find a large white decorate platter and paint the middle with the chalkboard paint. Ornate edges would be beautiful on a wedding table, maybe with the menu written on it. Great lens!

    What an unique idea for a wedding or any type party for that matter. I really liked the mini heart chalkboards. That would be great for a Valentines party. Great job.
