The Good, The Bad and The Ugly of Working From Home.
Like anything else, working from home has it's good and bad points. Many say the only way to make a living is to work at home on the Internet. Yet others say you should only supplement your day job with part time at home work activities. In either case, there are pros and cons that should be considered. For me I wouldn't have it any other way.

Like anything else, working from home has it's good and bad points. Many say the only way to make a living is to work at home on the Internet. Yet others say you should only supplement your day job with part time at home work activities. In either case, there are pros and cons that should be considered. The Pros
One of the biggest advantages to working from home is the flexibility you enjoy. The alarm clock is a thing you can use if you want to, but don't really have to. Your hours are whatever you want them to be. Work a little differently each day or always the same. Do whatever needs to be done.
How can you be that flexible? Because you are the boss. You make the rules and you run the show. A lot of Internet business starters dream of "firing their boss". That is a possibility if you have the drive to make it happen. Once you get there, the stress you will be free from is enough to add ten years or more to your life.
You think you have health benefits now? When you work at home, you can start your day with a run or a swim or a trip to the gym. The blood gets pumping, you have better concentration and you can end up in the best shape of your life AND make money in the process.
LIke me and if you have kids, you get to spend more time with them. You can be there for that first step or first word.
Another pro of working at home is that you are able to work from anywhere. For instance, I take my laptop outside and work from the patio sometimes. The other day I worked from the place where I get my car serviced as they have wireless internet access. The change in environment helps greatly. If I had to, I could work in an airport, restaurant or other public place that has wireless Internet access.
Cons
Working from homer tends to be a bit on the lonely side. There will be very little social interaction involved, unless you count IMing friends once in a while. Otherwise, if you need to interact with people on a face-to-face basis, this may not be the right fit for you.
Another problem can be distractions. Kids crying, telemarketers ringing, TV too loud, etc., can be distracting. Remember that other people may have no realisation that you are "in the office" and will just act as if you are home.
Discipline is another con of working at home. You will need to have a set time period to do certain tasks each day. Just like a regular job, you will work from X am to X pm every day. This takes discipline to keep up with. When you are working, do your work. Do not put off tasks that are daunting or menial. You are your own boss now, so you need to get used to that situation.
The fact that you are always in the same place may be a little on the boring side as well. There is no mental separation of work and home. You need to make that distinction.
In my humble opinion, the pros far outweigh the cons for working from home. I personally prefer it because why work hard to make someone else wealthy, when you can be doing it yourself. It's your choice!
Why Do We Procrastinate When Working From Home?
It's basic human nature to procrastinate.
Working from home is one of the greatest things I have ever come across. I get to set my own hours, do what I want, when I want and as much as I want. Basically, there is no boss around pressing you to do your job. Wait! Do your JOB? Yes, do your job. Working from home IS a job after all so why do people procrastinate when they have no need to? Here, we will look at that phenomenon. The behaviour of procrastination affects almost everyone at one time or another in their life. For some it is a continuous habit, part of who they are, a not-so-endearing character trait; for others it may be a situational thing and doesn't affect too many events in their life. For whatever reason, people put off things they don't want to do - fact.
These thinking patterns give way to the real underlying reasons we procrastinate in our work from home situation.
- Commitment to doing the job in the first place. If you are not serious about doing a certain job, don't take it on. Each task
requires a specific amount of energy as well as time and emotion. This makes you feel like not starting because "you are just not into it right now".
- Believe it or not, it is possible to be scared of certain jobs. Perhaps you think you bit off a bit more than you could chew. You may feel like you can't get a handle on it, so you keep putting it off until the inevitable happens-your deadline passes and you haven't even begun yet. Look at prospective jobs closely before you accept them.
This can fall into two distinct categories: fear of failing or fear of doing so well you are sought out for that work again.
- The activity is not given enough of a priority in your schedule. Maybe you don't really WANT to do that job, but you know that somebody has to. You may even feel that YOU are the one to do it; you just don't want to. Something else always looks better and you just cannot pass that up, so your accepted task sits waiting to be completed. If you take a job or agree to do it, you are bound to that promise.
- Knowledge. After you look at the job closer, you start thinking that you made a mistake, but now you are stuck. The answer? Just put it off until you absolutely HAVE to get it done. In that scenario, quality will suffer as you rush through, doing a half-cracked job in the process.
- Last, but certainly not least, is the fact that you simply do not want to do it. Here, you have three choices; 1) relinquish it and give up the income it would have generated, 2) sub-contract it and let somebody else do it, and 3) just get through it the best you can.
Remember, this is your business and you are the face of it. What you do and how you get things done reflects your business. Don't put things off but rather honor your agreement to do the task.
Basic human nature will always play a role in procrastination. Jobs you enjoy doing are infinitely more enticing than painful or dull ones. We seek out what makes us feel good and attempt to avoid the things that we don't like doing. That's why it's important to work on your goal setting skills. If you don't have or set any goals you will struggle without having any direction or any processes in place to monitor and measure your progress.
Consciously determining why you procrastinate will go a long way in helping you change your behaviour. Don't expect to transform your habits over night, but buy taking small steps in the right direction you'll eventually get there. If you reward yourself for your little successes in this area, you just might make non-procrastination more pleasurable than full-blown-avoidance-procrastination.
5 Time Management Skills
Every home based business owner needs to use.
Eventually you will get to a point in your home based business where everything is simple. You can work 2 hours a day, check emails before bed or whatever your heart desires. However, in the beginning it's nothing like this at all. Here are 5 ways you can utilize your time properly to progress your home based business at a faster rate.
Make a list
This is probably the easiest one to achieve. Simply make a list of things that you need to do that day. Making a list in this way keeps you organized and helps keep you on track. You will get the things done that need to get done each day. This will also help you to not get distracted. Back this up with discipline, which is next.
Discipline
Set priorities
When it is time to work make sure you do. This means getting rid of those little habits that turn out to make everything take longer. The best thing to do is treat your time for work like you would a regular job. This means eliminating the television, limiting our personal calls throughout the day, or anything else that might be necessary. Even if you have to set a specific amount of hours we highly recommend it. If you stick to your guns you will be able to run through tip #1 with ease.
You will have certain tasks that need to be done each day. As you create your "to do" list, prioritize those tasks and do the most important ones first. In addition to being able to get the vital jobs done, you will also find that prioritizing things aids you in keeping deadlines, if you have them. This is especially important for freelancers working with clients that need the job at a certain time.
Along these same lines is the art of mastering when to say "No". Being at home, you will need to have time to perform chores; that is a given point. However, those chores and household tasks can be done after your work has been done for the day.
We kind of mentioned this a few minutes ago, but the more realistic you are with your home based business, the easier it will be to prosper. See, if you set something that is reachable and you get there, it's a great feeling. However, if the goal is too high and you fail, it's a big downer. So if you're already thinking about making $100,000 in your first month you might as well change that now.
Remain organized
Be Realistic
Eventually you will come to find that this alleviates a ton of pressure throughout your work in progress. All we can say is the more realistic you are in the beginning, the easier it will be to handle the obstacles when they occur. If you didn't reach your realistic goal, just shoot for it this month or make it a bit lower where it can be attainable.
What it comes down to though is being organized. All the information we've provided you with today is helpful, but if you don't organize it then you might as well scrap everything. The messy world means sloppy work, and sloppy work means a longer period of time before you find success (if you even do).
