Chambery Airport

A Guide to Chambery Airport

Chambery Airport is a small but modern international airport situated between the towns of Chambery and Aix Les Bains in the Savoie region of France. Known as the gateway to the Alps, Chambery Airport is the "local Airport" for some of the best ski resorts including Courchevel, Meribel, Tignes and Val d'Isere.

At Chambery Airport you will not find a long walk to the baggage carousel or a 1km hike to the car hire office. The small convenient terminal ensures as little time as possible is spent at the airport maximising your time on the slopes. While other skiers and snowboarders are still collecting their luggage at Geneva or Lyons you will be out of the airport and experiencing the shortest transfer time to some of the most snow sure resorts in the Alps.

Chambery Airport - Closer to the Piste

Why waste time on the peage when you want to be on the piste? Chambery Airport is within a 2hr drive of Alpe d'Huez, Chamonix, Courchevel, Flaine, La Clusaz, La Plagne, La Rosiere, Les Arcs, Les deux Alpes, Meribel, Tignes,Val Thorens,Val d'Isere, Sainte Foy, Valmorel and Vaujany.

A cheap Snowjet flight to Chambery saves you an average of 1hr transfer time in each direction over other airports in the region. That's an extra 2 hrs of slope time rather than coach time. Spend less time on the road and more time on the slopes with Snowjet flights to Chambery.

Chambery Resort Guide

Some of the finest ski resorts are found in the Alps - within a proximity to Chambery Airport.

Chamonix is a town at the foot of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Europe, and several of the next contenders. It is a unique piece of France, on the borders of both Italy and Switzerland and widely proclaimed to be the capital of the Alps. The town held the inaugural Winter Olympics in 1924, but it was Mont Blanc and the fiercely steep and jagged Chamonix Aiguilles - needles - which made it a must for mountaineers, skiers and artists.

Courchevel is the gateway to The Three Valleys, a 600km playground of infinite possibility. From the summit of the Saulire cable car you can simply drop down into neighbouring Meribel. Here and right across the vast domain, the pistes follow the lay of the land so you won't waste time or energy polling along flats. These natural links combined with an ultramodern lift system mean you can really cover some ground, so head up the hill early and be in Val Thorens in time for lunch. Keep your eyes on the clock if you are valley-hopping and be sure to be back in the right valley at home time.

The twin resorts of La Plagne and les Arcs make up one of the largest ski areas in the world, Paradiski. The two sectors, which are divided geographically by the Porturin Gorge, are now one thanks to the Vanoise Express, a vast double-decker cable car with a capacity of 200 passengers per cabin.

La Plagne is reckoned to be one of the best resorts for a family ski holiday. Ski passes are free for children under-6, which gives you a bonus extra year for free compared with most other resorts, and there are superb childcare facilities in all of the accommodation centres.

Chambery is the closest airport to Les Arcs. It takes a little over an hour and half to reach Arc 1600, the first of several distinct villages. Count on another twenty minutes for the climb up to the pinnacle resort of Arc 2000. Between the two extremes, as their names suggest, lie Arc 1800 and Arc 1950.

Bang in the bull's-eye of the largest ski area in the world, it is not difficult to see why we Brits flock to Meribel like migrating birds. Sandwiched between upmarket Courchevel and purpose-built Val Thorens, Meribel is the perfect location to ski the Three Valleys. It's picture postcard pretty but without the four-figure price tag. It's ski to the door convenience without compromising on the view. And it has a justifiably renowned nightlife.

If you haven't seen enough of the mountains of Sainte Foy on skis, alternatively, try snowshoeing, dog sledding or ski biking, this involves careering downhill on a kind of non-motorised snow scooter. Or take in the vast mountain scape from above with helicopter ride over the Alps. If you find that just about every muscle in your body is protesting from being worked so hard on the hill, head to either Les Balcons de Sainte Foy or Les Fermes de Sainte Foy for some well-earned body pampering.

Tignes and its more celebrated neighbour Val d'Isere make up the awesome l'Espace Killy ski area. Less pricey and more down to earth than Val, Tignes is the perfect spot to make the most of this extensive and well-connected intermediate's playground. The off-piste is hard to beat too. The snow-sure resort, which has always been popular with the French, is growing in popularity with Brits as we bet increasingly on high altitude skiing. And you can appreciate why. Where else can you ski for ten months of the year?

Val d'Isère vies with Meribel as the preferred resort of British skiers. And it is easy to see the attraction. Val and Tignes are the two resorts which make up the Espace Killy, a vast ski area with an excellent snow record and served by one of the most modern lift networks in Europe. The resort itself is known for its luxury accommodation, gourmet restaurants and superb nightlife. Val d'Isère appears to have it all. But it does come at a price. It's up there with the most expensive resorts in the French Alps.

Val Thorens is not only the highest resort in Europe but also part of the largest ski area in the world, the Three Valleys. Far less British than Meribel and way cheaper than Courchevel, VT is the place to be to access some of those hundreds of kilometres of piste. 'Some' because, despite the area's ultramodern high-speed lift network, in a week you can only hope to scratch the snow's surface. And what outstanding snow! With the resort itself at 2300m of altitude and with no fewer than 5 lift-accessed peaks over 3000m, VT boasts exceptional snow conditions for six months of the year.
