Manchester United have beaten Chelsea 6-5 on penalties after a pulsating 120 minutes of action in Moscow ended with the sides deadlocked at 1-1.
Cristiano Ronaldo - who had earlier scored in normal time - was the guilty party for United, seeing his penalty saved, before John Terry, with the tenth penalty of the shootout, missed the chance to win the match for Chelsea, the captain slipping and seeing his effort clip the outside of the post. With the score at 6-5 to United, Nicolas Anelka then had his kick saved by United's Dutch international goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar to seal a victory every bit as dramatic as their last-minute triumph over Bayern Munich in 1999.
The prolific Ronaldo gave Manchester United the lead with a powerful header after 26 minutes, only for Frank Lampard to score a somewhat fortuitous equaliser for Chelsea on the stroke of half-time, the England midfielder profiting when an ambitious Michael Essien shot was deflected into his path.
Probably not believing their luck at going in at the interval on level terms after having been outplayed for the most part, Chelsea were the dominant force against an evidently tiring United in the second half and Didier Drogba struck a post with 12 minutes remaining.

Final Match: Machester Unt. defeating Chelasea FC

High drama
Sir Alex Ferguson's team had prevailed 3-0 on penalties in the FA Community Shield on 5 August after a 1-1 draw but the prospect of a repeat looked distant when Cristiano Ronaldo headed them into a deserved 26th-minute lead. Chelsea equalised 19 minutes later through Frank Lampard, however, and they appeared more likely winners thereafter, Didier Drogba and Lampard both striking the woodwork.

Lampard leveller
Tévez next passed up another presentable opening from Rooney's low right-wing centre and Chelsea took advantage of this profligacy on the stroke of half-time. Lampard reacted quickest to slip the ball beyond Van der Sar after Essien's speculative long-range effort had struck both Vidi%u0107 and Ferdinand. Having got back into the game, Chelsea were eager to build on their equaliser and might have been in front within ten minutes of the restart. Florent Malouda sent Essien away down the right and the Ghanaian turned away from two defenders on the edge of the area, only to direct a left-foot attempt too high. Ballack then sliced wide as the United defence parted invitingly.

Drogba denied
Before kick-off, the United end of the ground had displayed a series of cards spelling out one simple message: Believe. With Ballack and midfield partner Lampard growing in influence, however, that conviction now seemed exclusively Chelsea's and they came closer than ever to a second goal with 12 minutes left when Drogba, out of nothing, curled a shot from 25 metres beyond Van der Sar but off the goalkeeper's left-hand upright. Ryan Giggs came on after 87 minutes to make a record-breaking 759th United appearance, yet with tension setting in neither side were willing to risk defeat and commit men forward.

Overtime tension
Still, Chelsea continued to look more enterprising and early in extra time they rattled the woodwork again as Ashley Cole and Ballack set up Lampard for an improvised shot that came back off the bar with Van der Sar beaten. Terry then blocked Giggs's goalbound strike after Patrice Evra's low centre had taken %u010Cech out of the game. The ebb and flow of attacks continued, with the only advantage gained being United's after Drogba was dismissed for raising a hand to Vidi%u0107. That seemed not to matter when Ronaldo missed United's third kick of the shoot-out, but Chelsea's moment passed with Terry's slip and Van der Sar's subsequent glory-grabbing save.

Champions League Final Stadium

Luzhniki Stadium Moscow

Luzhniki Stadium will host the Champios League Final for 2008 on 21 May.
The Grand Sports Arena of the Luzhniki Olympic Complex in Moscow, or briefly Luzhniki Stadium, is the biggest sports stadium in Russia.
Its total seating capacity is 84,745 seats, all covered. The stadium is a part of the Luzhniki Olympic Complex, previously called the Central Lenin Stadium.
Luzhniki Stadium has been scheduled by UEFA to host the 2008 UEFA Champions League final. The Luzhniki Stadium also hosted the final game of the 1957 Ice Hockey World Championship between Sweden and the Soviet Union, attended by a crowd of 55,000 and setting a new world record.
The "Luzhniki" stadium was previously (before the USSR disintegration) called "the Central Lenin Stadium".
Many people think that the "Luzhiki" stadium was constructed specially for the 1980 Olympic games. It's not true. It was constructed in 1956 and has been repeatedly modernized and reconstructed.
The Stadium has been awarded a five star rating by UEFA.

United @ Champions League Moscow Final

Wes Brown reflected on a "brilliant" evening at Old Trafford as Manchester United FC overcame FC Barcelona by the narrowest of margins to reach the UEFA Champions League final.
The sides were virtually inseparable over 180 minutes of absorbing football that featured only one goal - Paul Scholes's powerful swerving long-distance effort 14 minutes into the second leg. It was an effort worthy of settling a meeting between two of Europe's most famous clubs and one that left Brown in raptures. "It's brilliant," he said.

Brown is looking forward to the future with optimism, saying: "I've always been here and I'm happy that I've signed. It could be a great ending to the season." When asked if he ever wanted to leave, his reply was simply: "Never". He will be hoping for another reminder of why he pledged his future to the club in Russia on 21 May.

Manchester United Coach Sir Alex Ferguson

Coach Profile

Manchester United manager
Sir Alex Ferguson

Date of birth: 31 December 1941
Nationality: Scottish
Playing career: Queen's Park FC, Saint Johnstone FC, Dunfermline Athletic FC, Rangers FC, Falkirk FC, Ayr United FC
Coaching career: Falkirk FC, East Stirlingshire FC, Saint Mirren FC, Aberdeen FC, Manchester United FC

Sir Alex Ferguson has enjoyed almost three decades at the top, restoring Manchester United FC to their position as one of Europe's foremost clubs. He helped nurture a group of young players including David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville who formed the backbone of United's treble-winning side in 1999. The esteem in which his peers hold him is reflected by his position as head of the UEFA Coaches Panel.

United appointed Ferguson in 1986 and after a difficult start the Scot led the club to their longest period of sustained success. Their first trophy was the 1990 FA Cup, followed next season by UEFA Cup Winners' Cup glory. In 1993 came the first of nine Premier League titles, to which five FA Cups were added. Ferguson's finest moment came in 1999, when two added-time goals gave United a 2-1 UEFA Champions League final victory against FC Bayern Mnchen. After failing to get beyond the 2005/06 group stage and finishing runners-up behind Premiership champions Chelsea FC, Ferguson hit the heights again with the 2006/07 league title and a place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

Moscow Guide

Moscow is the capital and the largest city of Russia, and the largest city in Europe, with its metropolitan area ranking among the largest urban areas in the world. Moscow is the country's political, economic, religious, financial, educational and transportation centre.

Moscow will also be the first city of the footballing world on 21 May as it hosts the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League final. Mentioned for the first time in the medieval Ipaty chronicles in 1147, Moscow was not always the Russian capital, with St. Petersburg taking that honour between 1712 and the Russian revolution in 1918.
Moscow's underground railway is rightly regarded as an architectural wonder. First opened in 1935, it now boasts 12 lines, 176 stations and 292.2km of track.

Red Square was a centre of trade and commerce in Moscow before becoming the focal point of the nation's political life. Tsarist decrees were made here long before Soviet times, when major military parades and public celebrations were the order of the day. The embalmed body of Vladimir Lenin was first put on display in the nearby Mausoleum in 1930 and remains on display between 10.00 and 13.00 every day except Mondays and Fridays.

Traditionally a city of onion domes, the modern Moscow skyline looks more like Manhattan, with high-rise buildings going up all over. The new Moskva-City international business centre being built near the Luzhniki will boast 15 skyscrapers in the space of 60 hectares, with the Federation Tower set to be the biggest of them at around 420m high.

mOsCoW tRiVia
While Russians are traditionally vodka drinkers, that cliché does not hold true in Moscow, where beer is the drink of choice. Indeed, the Luzhniki Stadium hosts a famous annual beer festival.

I think it is unfair to say based on the fact that penalties were involved. I think they both played an admiral game and both deserved to place hands to the cup. Unlucky Chelsea, it just wasn't your day I'm afraid.

I see now that it is over and Man U won! That's great! They are my favorite UEFA team, I started following them back when Beckham was with them!

Hi
With the draw for this season's Champions League quarter & semis just being made today for the 2009 final, I was looking around for info on the 2008 final because the draw and the possible remaining Champions League fixtures has thrown up the likihood that it could be a repeat of Man Utd and Chelsea again. Another all English Final, bet Uefa are praying that doesn't happen again, especially in Rome!
Talking of Rome, I'm also looking for people to take a look at this article Should The Champions League Final be Moved From Rome. This is something The Times newspaper has started, a bebate hoping to get Uefa to chance its mind. Please take a look and cast your vote with The TImes as they are going to send all there results to Uefa!
Many thanks Fantastic lens. Looking forward to the 2009 one! Cheers

What is UEFA Champions League?

in a few words...

The UEFA Champions League (which used to be named and is often still called European Cup) is an annual club football competition organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) for the most successful football clubs in Europe. It is one of the most prestigious club trophies in the sport along with America's Copa Libertadores. It has a global audience of more than a billion people.
The current holder of the UEFA Champions League trophy is Barcelona, who beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Stade de France in St-Denis, Paris on 17 May 2006.

More on UEFA champions league

The UEFA Champions League (usually referred to as simply the Champions League or less frequently as the European Cup) is an annual football cup competition organised by UEFA since 1955 for the top football clubs in Europe. It is the most prestigious club trophy in European football.

Prior to 1992 the tournament was officially called the ' European Champion Clubs Cup but was usually referred to as simply the European Cup or European Champions' Cup'. The competition was initially a straight knockout competition open only to the champion club of each country. During the 1990s the tournament began to be expanded, incorporating a round-robin group phase and more teams. Europes strongest national leagues now provide up to four teams each for the competition. The UEFA Champions League should not be confused with the UEFA Europa League, formerly known as the UEFA Cup.

The tournament consists of several stages. In the present format it begins in mid-July with three knockout qualifying rounds. The 16 surviving teams join 16 seeded teams in the group stage, in which there are eight groups consisting of four teams each. The eight group winners and eight runners-up enter the final knockout phase, which ends with the final match in May.

The title has been won by 21 different clubs, 12 of which have won the title more than once. The all-time record-holders are Real Madrid, who have won the competition nine times, including the first five seasons it was contested. Barcelona are the current champions. Since the tournament changed name and structure in 1992, no club has managed consecutive wins.

Champions League Trophy

what the winners get

UEFA Champions League is a highly profitable competition for the clubs that reach the group stage. UEFA distributes part of the revenue obtained from television deals between these clubs. For example, the payments for the 2004/05 competition ranged from .8m (Sparta Prague) to %u20AC30.6 million (Liverpool) [4]. UEFA estimates the amount of money to be given to the 32 participants of the 2005/06 group stage at %u20AC430 million [5]. Clubs make additional money from ticket sales, corporate hospitality, merchandising and so on.
