Champions League Final Athens 2007

Ranked #8,046 in Sports & Recreation, #195,267 overall

Champions League Final: 23 May 2007, Athens Olympic Stadium

UEFA Champions League Final took place IN ATHENS at Olympic Stadium (OAKA). AC MILAN vs LIVERPOOL at the Athens Champions League Final. The two magor European teams met for the second time, after the final of Istanbul in 2005.

Pippo Inzaghi struck twice as AC Milan gained revenge for their 2005 Champions League final defeat against Liverpool with victory in Athens.

Inzaghi scored a freak opener in first-half injury time, unwittingly deflecting Andrea Pirlo's free-kick past a wrong-footed Pepe Reina.
Steven Gerrard missed a glorious chance to equalize before Inzaghi slid home a second eight minutes from time.
Dirk Kuyt pulled one back with a header with a minute left, but time ran out.
Liverpool, as expected, used Kuyt as a lone front man with captain Gerrard pushed into an advanced role.
And it was a ploy that worked well until Liverpool conceded unfortunately in the dying seconds of the first half.
As Liverpool pushed forward, they were punished by a piece of brilliance by Kaka and a trademark ruthless finish from Inzaghi.
Kaka unlocked Liverpool with a glorious pass and Inzaghi rounded Reina before scoring from an angle.
Crouch then tested Dida with a 25-yard drive as Liverpool tried to mount an unlikely recovery.
Liverpool pulled one back in the dying seconds when Daniel Agger flicked on Pennant's corner and Kuyt headed home.
But this time there was no dramatic comeback and Milan celebrated wildly.

Goals: Inzaghi 45, 82.

A Champions League Final not to be forgotten

AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti must decide between Filippo Inzaghi and Alberto Gilardino to play up front in the Champions League final in Athens.

Milan will give Paolo Maldini (knee) a late fitness test to see whether he can play in his eighth final.

Liverpool winger Boudewijn Zenden is a doubt with an ankle problem, so Harry Kewell could play wide on the left.

Xabi Alonso's inclusion could depend on whether Steven Gerrard plays on the right or in central midfield.

Liverpool's first-choice keeper Jose Reina and back-up Jerzy Dudek have both been passed fit.

AC Milan coach on Liverpool

Carlo Ancelotti - Milan:"Liverpool do not have the DNA of an English side."

AC Milan Carlo Ancelotti has labelled Liverpool the least technically gifted of the three English sides to reach the Champions League semi-finals.
Ancelotti has also accused the Reds of abandoning their English roots ahead of their Champions League final on 23 May.

"Technically, Liverpool are the worst team of the three English sides who reached the semi-finals," he said.

"But out of Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United, I'd have preferred United in the final."

Milan are a strong Italian team. there is a strong Italian culture running through the team." said Ancelotti.

"Liverpool do not have the DNA of an English side. It is more of a Mediterranean team because of the coach."
