Chanel No.5

Ranked #3,740 in Fashion & Beauty, #56,278 overall

Chanel No.5 Is Sold Every 30 Seconds

Chanel No.5 is the first perfume launched by Parisian couturier Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel.

A bottle of Chanel No.5 is sold every 30 seconds, making it the world's most famous and popular perfume.

Chanel No.5 was first launched to New York society ladies through the perfumery counters at upscale department stores in 1924.

It was introduced beyond Chanel boutiques to the French market in the 1940s and despite a slight dip in affections during the 1960s, remains the world's most enduring, classic scent.

As it's creator was once quoted - "in order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different".

The Creator - Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel

Chanel No.5 was introduced to women in 1924.

Until this time, "respectable" women favoured the pure essense of a single garden flower in their fragrance.

Provocative perfumes with musk or jasmine were associated with women of the demi-monde, prostitutes or courtesans.

Coco Chanel introduced Chanel No.5 - a scent that would epitomize the boyish, modern flapper that would speak to the liberated female spirit of the 1920s.

Lucky No.5

The number five had potent associations for Coco Chanel from her earliest days at Aubazine.

Aubazine had been founded by a Catholic order who placed great emphasis on numerology and particularly the number five, which signified the pure embodiment, spirit and mystical meaning of objects. The paths which led Chanel to the cathedral for daily prayer were designed in circular patterns repeating the number five and were lined with five-petalled roses.

When Coco Chanel was presented with small glass vials of scent numbered 1-5 and 20-24 to assess, she chose the sample composition contained in the fifth vial and told her master perfumer, Ernest Beaux, "I present my dress collections on the fifth of May, the fifth month of the year and so we will let this sample number five keep the name it has already, it will bring good luck."

Falling in Love With Chanel No.5

"Parfums Chanel," was established in 1924 to manage all aspects of the Chanel No.5 fragrance business - the production, marketing and distribution. Coco Chanel wanted to release Chanel No. 5 from the confines of her boutiques to the world.

Chanel No.5 was first introduced to New York City's clientele with its penchant for sophisticated, luxury goods.

The first advertisement appeared in The New York Times on 16 December 1924, announcing that Chanel No.5 would be available at upscale department store, Bonwit Teller.

From then on, the sale of Chanel No.5 in America was a word-of-mouth phenomenon, promoted from perfume counters at high-end department stores by enthusiastic sales staff.

The Continued Love Affair With Chanel No.5

The Chanel No.5 marketing strategy in Europe was no less restrained than in the United States. The Galleries Lafayette was the first retailer of the fragrance in Paris. Chanel No. 5 was not advertised in France at all until the 1940s.

The early 1940s industry trend was to increase brand exposure, but "Parfums Chanel" took a contrary track and actually decreased advertising.

All fragrance sales had flourished during the years of World War II. Perfume sales in the United States had increased tenfold and Chanel No.5 particularly flourished.

The Chanel No.5 market extended to the military post exchanges (the PX) - a marketing move that could have risked the exclusive status of the brand, but instead further epitomized a world of luxury and romance. Soldiers coveted Chanel No.5 for their sweethearts at home.

Chanel No.5 passe? Non non!

The 1960s and 1970s saw a diminished allure of Chanel No.5.

It was seen as being too proper! passe! and mass market!

Chanel No.5 was removed from drug stores, pharmacies and similar outlets.

The artistic director of "Parfums Chanel", Jacques Helleu, recreated the Chanel No.5 image and introduced French actress Catherine Deneuve as the new face of Chanel.

Movie glamour, sophistication, fantasy and seduction were returned to the iconic Chanel No.5, which has never looked back.

What is Your All Time Favourite Perfume?

Chanel No.5?

I like this scent, but it doesn't like me. Isn't it funny how things smell differently on people? My favorite is Wind Song (as many people know), but I have some more expensive ones I like also.

coming back to bless this lens. marilyn monroe wore nothing, she wore only chanel no. 5.
  • LaraineRose Apr 9, 2012 @ 6:38 am | delete
That is the perfume I always used to wear. I found it light and didn't seem to bother others around me. I switched to another name for a while but am thinking that I must have Chanel No 5 again. Thank you for writing this. Blessings.

Timelessly classic, it will never, ever go out of style. I don't have a favorite, my favorite coincides with my mood of the moment....
  • Halloweenkitchenwitch Mar 23, 2012 @ 11:41 pm | delete
I remember my mother all dressed up for "Club", her hair pulled up, her make up on, looking so very beautiful. And she always wore Chanel No. 5. Today I own Shalimar, Obsession for Women and Chanel No. 5...they are my very favorites!
  • Pastiche Mar 22, 2012 @ 1:26 pm | delete
I have always loved No 5. My grandmother wore it and it was so delicate yet comfortable. I only wear the parfum and a bottle will last me more than a decade.
  • JoshK47 Mar 22, 2012 @ 10:41 am | delete
A very interesting read! Learned a lot here - thank you very much for sharing. Blessed by a SquidAngel. I'm not sure what my favorite perfume is, though...
  • Mia-Mia Mar 21, 2012 @ 8:34 pm | delete
My aunt gave me a bottle of Chanel No.5 for Christmas when I was 15. I loved it then, and I love it still. Over the years, I have tried many other perfumes and colognes, but I always returned to my Chanel. I've worn it exclusively for over 20 years now. I even named my little Maltese, Mme. Coco Chanel, she goes by ehr initials, C.C. Thanks for the history on the perfume. A very nice lens.
  • TheLifestyleChanger Mar 21, 2012 @ 8:39 pm | delete
Thank you for visiting and especially for sharing your lovely story - Chanel No.5 gifts have obviously created long lasting passions over time. All the best to you and Mme. Coco Chanel!
  • 7thStone Mar 20, 2012 @ 9:25 am | delete
Chanel No. 5 is nice, but Chanel Coco is my only favorite commercial perfume. My daily perfume is a custom mix essential oil in an almond carrier oil that I use after showering. Nice lens ... I really enjoyed the history you presented on No. 5.

I don't think I've ever smelled this scent; certainly don't know anyone who could have afforded it! My favorite is Givenchy Amarige...
  • TheLifestyleChanger Mar 21, 2012 @ 8:41 pm | delete
We need to exchange, because I am sure I have whiffed your Givenchy perfume, but can't bring it to memory. All the best.

A bottle of Chanel No. 5 was one of the gifts I gave my girlfriend the first Christmas I spent with her. It must have worked since we've been married now for more years than she'll let me admit to. :-)
  • TheLifestyleChanger Mar 21, 2012 @ 8:42 pm | delete
It obviously worked - bravo Chanel No.5!

I don't have a favorite, as my perfume tray shows...I have a Chanel No.5 Bottle of perfume about 45 years old in a beautiful crystal bottle..I kept it after my mom passed, it brings back my memory of her when smelling the perfume.
  • TheLifestyleChanger Jan 31, 2012 @ 6:37 pm | delete
That is a lovely sentiment and a true Chanel classic. All the best.
