What You Need to Do for Your Better Life

There is a lot of advice out there about how to improve yourself, your life and your lot, but in the glut of self help advice what exactly do you need to do to change your life for the better?

Even if we are reasonably happy we normally have something worrying us; the plight of others or the world, a feeling of lack of personal achievement, changes happening in our lives outside of our control, regrets about the past or choices we have made, worries about getting ill or even dying.

Sometimes we just can't put a finger on what is really bothering us or we think we know but on eliminating the preceived problem we still find ourselves unhappy or unfulfilled.

Here is a way to create your personal plan for growth. By working out what you need to change and then following it up you can get straight to the point. If there are several issues you may have to address them one at a time, at worst you should go away with some food for thought.

Your Self Improvement Diet

Have you spent many years reading self improvement or self help books only to feel that they haven't helped or you have failed to follow them through?

The world of personal development is bursting at the seams with advice, plans, programs and the answer to life, the universe and everything.

However, reading books and going on or completing courses will not provide a permanent fix for what is wrong in anyone's life.

In the same way that people are realising that crash or faddy diets are not the answer to healthy and sustained weight loss so to is the dip in and out style of self improvement.

This does not mean that there is no value in what you have done so far, nor does it mean that the books or courses have no value. The issue is that for true self improvement you need to do several things.

Firstly, you need to look at yourself and work out who you are and how you function. You are the raw materials, the ingredients that you are putting into your life.
Secondly you need to look at what you want to do with yourself, decide how we want to live your life.
Then you have to put this into action, refining and fine tuning as you grow and learn and your needs change.

6 Steps to the You You Want to Be 

  1. BE: Know Yourself
    What are your good and bad points. What motivates you? What turns you off? Discover what really makes you tick and why you behave in certain ways by taking a personality test. Then develop further self awareness to get you ready to make those life changes.
  2. BE CAN DO: Believe in Yourself
    The secrets to achieving improvement in anyone's life all start with building self confidence or self belief. If you don't believe in yourself or believe that you or your life can change it just won't happen. It's not magic; develop your self belief and inner confidence or you will just either never start or give up quickly so you won't even have given yourself the opportunity to succeed.
  3. BE CAN DO: Want the Change.
    Believing you can change will only get you so far. You must want to change as well.Personal Motivation is vital to ensure you make the change happen. Without these you will never manage to create change in your life. Boost your motivation if necessary.
  4. CAN DO: Plan the Change
    Once you know yourself and have the belief and desire to change you need to be sure to make any other changes to yourself. Create clear personal improvement goals. Start with a theme for change and clarify it into SMART goals. Create an action plan to achieve your goals.
  5. DO: Make the Change
    Work with your action plan for personal change. Live it, breathe it and don't get side tracked.
  6. DO: Keep Going
    Take one step at a time, but keep going. Review your self improvement goals and priorities every so often, re-aligning them as you grow in yourself. Keep your motivation going.

More Simple Steps to Personal Change

So you've been working on creating a better you. Now you want this better you to move into a better life. Creating your ideal life is not very different to creating anything. You have two main options to choose between.
The first can be likened to an artist or painter creating through intuition and feel. They work with the materials they have to hand, letting their work take shape organically. This obviously has high risks and depending on the skill, talent and materials to hand either a beautiful object is the result or a dismal failure is assigned to the bin.
The second option can be a more planned affair. Like making a cake or building a house, certain steps are followed to ensure success. This second option, although more mundane and definitely less romantic has a much higher chance of success.

4 Steps to Your New Life 

  1. BE CAN DO: What Needs to Change?
    Sometimes you need to resolve outstanding issues before you can start to focus on new projects. Are there things getting in the way of your clear thinking? Is now the right time for a change? You may think you need change when a new perspective is all that is required. Back to your personal development here!
  2. BE CAN DO: Decide on your Goals
    What are your priorities? What would you like to be remembered for? What do you want to achieve? Start with a theme and fine tune it to a 'SMART Goal' (SMART = Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timed.) Remember that these are not cast in stone and as you change and grow in yourself you can fine tune or even scrap them and start again. You need to be motivated to achieve these goals so ensure you have a reward for achieving them.
  3. BE CAN DO: Plan, plan and plan
    So now you have a list of goals that you want to make happen. To make them achievable you need to plan your actions to get there. Think about the final result and ask yourself what you need to do to get there. "In order to...I need to...". To get to that step what do you need to do before that? Keep working backwards until you have your first step. Sometimes you will jump about and sometimes you will miss a step. Keep juggling until your path to your goal is clear.
  4. DO: Make it Happen!
    What are you waiting for? Get on with your action plan. If you hit an obstacle or a stumbling block go back to your goals and your plan and check it out again. Revise things if necessary. Keep going, one step at a time.
