I smoked for 39 yrs.. For the last 3 yrs. have been smoking at least a pack and a half. I tried the gums,patches,e-cigs and lozenges. Even tried chantix about a year ago, but they made my heart race and seemed to want to smoke more, so I stopped taking chantix. For the last year I have been wanting to get away from cigs, thinking about it everyday. I got tired of them controlling me. I decided to give chantix another try but this time, instead of taking the whole pill I cut it in half. It worked. Heart doesn't race and don't have the urge to smoke more but smoke less. My start date was 1/07/2011. Friday 1/14/2011 was my first full day without a damn cig. That was the longest 24 hours I had to go through in a long time. Hopefully it will be all downhill from here. This is 50-50, mind and body addicition. Be strong and know it is worth the pain and suffering in the long run. Be SMOKE FREE EVERYONE.

My advice is to use Chantix in combination with Allen Carr's Easyway method. The problem with the Chantix program, is that they have a financial interest in convincing you that quitting is really hard. It is not. Chantix DOES expose how little you actually get from nicotine and that you can enjoy life without it.

One thing that caught me off guard was that I had to "quit" many times. After 1 mo. I got to the point where I didn't even think about the "wake up" cig or walk to work cig. Then, I went on a business trip and BAM, as soon as I left the terminal, I had a strong urge. This is where the Allen Carr mindset can help. You tell yourself that this is just in your mind, you remind yourself what will happen if you give in to the urge, and you actually smile knowingly that the urge means nothing and you can just ignore it.

I smoked for over 40 years, and really had no desire to quit, I guess that is why other methods did not work. I developed heart disease and emphysemia and that still didn't really give me the desire to quit. But I promised my sons that I would give Chantix a try. I now have been smoke free for over 2 years! And still amazed, no side effects, no lingering desire to "light up" and have gotten back some of my lung function. Wish I had had Chantix years ago. Please give it a try!

Today I started my fourth week of Chantix. I'm ecstatic to say that I now consider myself an ex-smoker, and I'm in shock at how easy it was. I've even referred to it as a magic bullet! Over the last few years, I've tried hypnosis, accupuncture, patches, gums, and lozenges to quit - all to no avail. I held my Chantix prescription for a while because I was afraid of all the horror stories. I waited for nothing. My biggest (actually only) side effect has been vivid dreams that are strange but humorous, and never scary. By the 2nd day of my treatment, I was already turned-off by cigarettes; I'm not even sure it's supposed to work that way, but it did! By the end of week 1, I was more than ready to quit! I was smoking out of habit, not need, and frankly they tasted as horrible as the first cigarette I ever smoked more than 30 years ago. If you are contemplating Chantix but are afraid, get over it. Think of how afraid you will be when you get that "lung cancer" diagnosis. This is absolutely the best thing I ever did for myself and my family. Good luck to all!

    You wrote it on my Birthday !!!! in fact 4 minutes befour !!! ( I was born at 7 : 35 am ! )

So maybe this is a good sign I should go ahead and use the Chantix...Or maybe it's not a sign and maybe I'm grasping for straws... What is your thought on it...?

I just started using Chantix today. I'm both excited and nervous all at the same time. I'm excited because I've been a smoker for 21 years now (started smoking at age 11), but nervous about any side effects I may experience. I'm hoping I don't experience any of the really bad side effects that others have reported, I've never experienced side effects with any other over the counter or prescription medicine (except once when I missed a scheduled dose) so I don't really expect too many negative side effects. I will say though, as I mentioned earlier, I just started taking Chantix this morning and all morning long I've felt very "happy"... like I want to get up and dance kind of happy. I don't and can't dance though so that's not going to happen... plus I'm at work right now, so that would just be weird; I'm sure my coworkers would think it's funny though. Anyway, it's been 5 hours since I took it and that weird happy feeling is starting to subside and I'm beginning to feel normal again. If that's the only side effect I have while being on this, I think I can handle it. I'll report on any other side effects I may experience though.

I'm doing the same thing, 2 weeks worth is all I have also, left over from a year ago.
I stupidly couldn't take the horrible nausea, my fault, I wasn't drinking a full glass of water, now I am, no nausea, just the dreams, but thats OK. I really think this 2 week supply will work as I am still trying to smoke, out of habit, but can't smoke but a couple puffs as they taste horrible. Good thing.
Good luck to you, I'm sure your 2 weeks supply will work because you want it to. Same as me.

I understand the nausea thing, that is why I quit using chantix about a year ago, Now I've started again with the remaining 2 weeks, Started 5 days ago and the nausea was horrid, eventhough I always took them after a meal I did NOT drink a full glass of water, (my stupidity), as it does say in the instructions. Today I drank a full glass of water and no nausea. YEAH. I can deal with the dreams as long as I quit smoking. I do still try to smoke (out of habit), but they taste awful. Good thing.
Try the water and see if it helps.
    Good Luck

I'm doing this quite differently. I got some from a friend who did not use them all. I have about 2 weeks worth. I'm on day 4 and 2 days smoke free. Cravings are not overpowering. Hopefully i will have enough by the end. Already i'm telling people i love in my life to get this. Great blog. Nice to see others doing it too.

Hi - I just started using Chantix on Monday (today is Thursday). So far, no side effects
except a kind of floating feeling. Nothing terrible, just weird. I'm still smoking but I don't
smoke at work (rather, outside at work) and have gone up to 10 hours without a cigarette.
Still smoke at home though. I have to say the .5 takes the edge off for sure, so far none
of that anxious feeling in my chest when I really need a smoke. I'll start taking .5 twice
a day tomorrow and am hoping I can curb or stop smoking at home!

Just started 9 days ago. Smoked for over 44 years (1 pack per day) and had tried all the usual suspects to quit, but Chantix appears to be the best (smoked 7 cigs on day 7 and none since). No real problems and my experience is virtually the same as the author of this article so far (a mental battle now as opposed to physical need). According to the documents this method was 51% successful in clinical trials. Anyone know what were the reason(s) for participants to relapse?

I smoked for 18 years. I heard and read alot of horror stories about chantix....I decided everyone is different so why not give it a shot. During my starter pack (day1-7). I had only a few side effects but i also took the pill on a full stomache with water. about the 3rd day i noticed i was not smoking as much. 1 pack of ciggs lasted me 4 days. I used to smoke 1 pack a day. when i started taking two pills a day, I did start having dreams. They are not bad dreams they are just weird. I wake up and laugh. I am on day 9 of the pill and I am smoke free for 2 days. I do have an urge hit me from time to time but it is not bad. It passes by within 5 minutes. I am really impressed...I NEVER thought it would be this easy to stop smoking. I went into a restraunt last night and they asked non smoking or smoking and i gladly told him we are all non smokers. felt so good. As of day 9 on chantix my side effects are dreams, and gas. Thats it nothing else. I will keep posting though. :-)

I smoked a pack a day for 11 years. I am experience extreme nausea and have to eat huge meals to keep me from vomitting. I sleep later I am guessing because of the vivid dreams. As a regular dreamer I don't find this fun. I am also trying to loose weight and gaining weight is not helping the cause. Gaining weight causes heart disease just like smoking. The anxiety is a lot less, however, which is good. Since other times I quit I hated the world. Good luck to others, but I don't think these side effects are worth it.

I don't know how to use this site but I hope someone sees my question.

I really need to quit - someone gave me a 3 month supply minus the first week. Should I cut the pills in half for the first week or take a full pill. They used the starter week and were too sick to continue and I would like to give it a shot.
It's encouraging to see so many people who have quit. I am smoking a pack and a half a day now and it's going on 45 years - crazy...not to mention the cost of cigs - disgusting.
Hopefully I will get an answer
    Sincerely
    Mary

To start Chantix, you need to first see how your body will react to taking the drug. I would first cut it in half and if that was still too strong cut it into thirds. I did start with the starter pak and the .05 was too strong for me so I cut it in half. Don;t forget to take it with water, makes all the difference in the world. Don't give up! I am also a pack and a half smoker and been smoking for 39 yrs.

I have been taking chantix for 20 days and I have been smoke-free for 10 days I missed a few doses so I postponed my quit date, I also take lexapro an anti depressant, my first 2 days of chantix I was getting upset stomach, but once I started taking with meals I was fine, I have wanted to sleep later, and omg the dreams, have one every night and can remember every part of them, but that is not so bad. When I started it I thought this is not working all I was getting was a bad taste in my mouth when I was smoking, then on my 10th day I was busy and I had not smoked in 4 hrs, and thought I really don't want one and the rest is history, I don't think I will ever smoke again!! I suggest chantix to everyone!! It really worked for me.

I've quit smoking several times in the past using the patch, Wellbutrin, gum, hypnosis, etc. and I manage to start again every time, though I've gone as long as a year and a half when I found out I was pregnant. I've smoked for 16 yrs. Strongly considering asking my doctor for Chantix but does anyone have experience with taking zoloft and Chantix at the same time? I'm on a low dose of zoloft for mild anxiety.

I started Chatax inmid-September. It is amazing. I no longer feel the need to run outside to smoke. When the rest of the family goes into the garage or outside, we don't smoke in the house ever, I don't feel the urge to join them.

When I started I continued smoking the first two days but began losing interest after that. I smoke one cigarette here and there (a day) but tend not to finish it.

I experienced lots of dreaming but I tend to dream anyway. Dreams were more vivid. Unfortunately, I have had stomach upset and gas. My doctor advised to cut dose in half and that helped. Now I'm taking the full dose 2x a day. I take the first one with breakfast and the second one at bedtime.

I feel so free. I can sit with a smoker and not care about having one myself. It is wonderful.

    Good luck to all
    Nantk

Yes I have known some one that has used Chantix to quit chewing. I used it to quit smoking with success. I had the muscle aches, weird dreams, mood swings and nausea so started halfing the dose and that seemed to clear up the side affects.

I will take my last pill on Sat. 12 weeks and not a puff. I will say i had every side effect, nausea, head ache, sleeplessness on 2 pills a day, muscle and joint aches extreme on that one so hopefully when i quit taking the pill they will go away. When I couldn't sleep I started taking 1 pill a day and that worked for me. I smoked 1 1/2 pks a day for over 40 years. I hardly think of smoking any more and it really doesan't bother me to be around those that do smoke. I have gained a little weight but I am a non smoker yeah!!!! I am a little nervous about not taking the pill any more, so am trying to keep my mind set on not smoking...I would recomment Chantix to any one the benefits out weigh the side effects..Good luck to all

Wow, I don't know what to say I started chantax June 31 and my quit date was the 7th of July... Well got scared and stopped the chantax the second week acually the day I suppose to quit smoking I quit chantax, however started back the 16th of July on it and I have had the funny taste in my mouth, and a little nausea at times, now it is giving me a headache but I am getting over a chest cold also with sinus problems so don't know if that is it or the chantax but I have been smoking now for 30 years and this is the first thing that has me not wanting a cig... It is amazing, and I can remember my dreams now... Dont' know the long term affect hope nothing crazy, but need to stop due to heart problems now... Hope it works I am very happy so far...

Make sure you take pill immediately after eating will help with with upset stomach. The feeling of wanting to jump out of your skin for me was being on full strength , end of third week went to one half pill twice daily instead of the whole one AM and PM. That eliminated that feeling for me.We had the 3D dreaming also.Good Luck

I am on my second day of using Chantix. After taking the first pill a got very nauseous and I felt heart palpitations that stopped in few minutes, that really scared me. During the day I felt a little tired and kind of weird in a way that I can't exactly explain. Almost lightheaded and on the verge of a panic attack. I did dream more during the night and I remember most of it which is unusual for me. Waking up was very hard the next morning. I decided to go for day two despite the first bad experience, that's how much I want to quit. I got the same effect on my second pills but not with such intensity. I am really hoping that I will be able to continue and see results.

    Good for You Kinyotta

The bad taste in your mouth is the precursor to the cigarettes tasting not so good anymore and that is a good thing. Be mindful on how you are feeling and what if any side effects (some are pretty much standard for most of us who took chantix ie 3D dreams, not sleeping well, excess gas) We are going on four months smoke free and two months off chantix. Good Luck and keep posting.

I am on day 5 of Chantix and I am very anxious to stop smoking. I haven't been really experiencing any bad side effects except I notice a bad taste in my mouth. It's not like bad breath or anything but it's different. I haven't set my date to stop smoking yet but I do have an idea of when. I must admit when I was reading the blogs I was a little scared to take the pill due to all of the bad side effects that was reported. Thank God I haven't had any.

I did it! I actually beat cigarettes by using chantix for thirty days. I have severe health problems from smoking, and was told of the newest product out in april 2007 chantix. My pulmonologist said trust me it's a very good product and has a big success rate. I began using it right after a biopsy was taken from my lung, and had to stop smoking because of the open wound in my lung. I didn't follow the direction's which said keep smoking while starting this pill. I just took the pill only, because I didn't want my memory of smoking to be part of the quitting process worried I would want a nicotine cigarette again and again. I religously stuck to the plan and thank God and Chantix for seeing me thru the worst habbit known to man. I was challenged by comming into close contact by other people's cigarettes and I hated the smell, and it didn't activate and old desire of nicotine which at first worried me. I'm completely free 1 year and 1 month later. June 2008. Chantix, "YOUR THE BEST".

    Kara

We are a real couple comnig up on 3 months smoke free tomorrow, could have not done this without chantix. Our other posts explain what worked for us,but everyone that takes chantix needs to be mindful how they are feeling. Don't confuse nicotine withdrawl symptons for chantix symptons.
If you decide to start just monitor yourself closely. Some other sites that have good information are: blogfabulous.com/chantix and
onchantix.com. which are just common folks like this site. Good Luck

I have been taking chantix for about 5 weeks now and I am very happy with how easy it has made it to quit smoking. I knew it was not a miracle pill and I had to make a few other life changes.
I am one who always started smoking again after several time of trying to quit because of weight gain. So this time I have also changed eating habits and ride my bike 10 miles a day and go to the gym 3 times a week. Well I have not lost any weight with all my efforts but I have maintained my weight and that is good enough for me. Oh, but what a great feeling to be a non-smoker and feeling healthier than I have in years....It's great to look in the mirror and see the changes I have made in myself. I smell good now too! Thank you Chantix! My only side effects are dreaming, some nausea ( have to eat something before I take Chantix)and gas. Very few craving for a cigarette and they pass very quickly. I am only taking one dose in the morning and skipping my nighly dose and it is still working.
  • Tara Jun 23, 2008 @ 9:11 am | delete
On day 14 so far here....kind of enjoying dreaming every night although I must admit they are very strange at times. I do get nauseous shortly after taking each pill but it usually subsides within an hour or 2. The gas makes it comical if you ask me but I'm weird like that, lol. All in all I would say it works so far and I live with a smoker. I can't stand the smell of it most of the time and really have no desire to have my hair and clothes smell anymore (even though they will from him smoking, but not as much). Sign up for the daily emails and phone calls from Chantix - I found that even if you have no other support from anyone else, it's nice to recieve an encouraging message every day from a neutral source. Ask your doctor if they have the coupons for Chantix as well (it's like an insurance card). My script is only costing me $10 per month! In closing, I think Chantix is totally worth a shot, good luck everyone!!

I used Chantix for 3 months and have been smoke free for almost 2 years. This does work, no doubt about it. I smoked about a pack a day for 25 years. This medication made is so easy to quit, even with the side-effects. Just knowing that it was only for 3 months made the side-effects tolerable and the long term benefit of being a non-smoker was well worth the discomfort. As far as weight gain...I did put on about 5 pounds after I stopped the Chantix and have lost 3 of them. I know that weight gain is a big deal for most women smokers, but really your overall health will be so much better if you quit. You can do it!

I have enjoyed reading your entries... and I actually have a prescription for Chantix, but have not gotten it filled yet. I am concerned about weight gain. I have currently lost 30lbs and want to keep it off - obviously if I had will power, I could do both, but chose to get the weight off first, not knowing if I would have problems gaining weight after quitting smoking.

Any feedback on weight gain after you have quit?

    Thanks -

Hello All closing in on 80 days smoke-Free. Have been off chantix for three weeks now, found the first week off chantix there were times I felt like jumping out of my skin not extreme but very strong. This started to ease the second week and has disappeared the end of this third week. I always remember that if I take one puff it turns on 50% of those nicotine receptors and that after one whole cigarette 100% of those receptors are now back in operation. So I never want to feel Iam stronger than nicotine and could get away with just a little puff. Somewhat enjoying night dreams where all of a sudden there is a cigarette in my hand in which I have just taken a puff at which time I panic and throw it down and rush to the hosiptal and ask if Iam addicted again.
Upon waking once again Iam mindful of how addicting nicotine is.

Sure am glad to have found this site and read all your entires. Thank you for sharing - big help. However, I am curious if anyone has had weight issues since quitting. I know it is a STUPID reason to smoke, but I gain weight when I quit and in turn, I am miserable! I am going to give Chantix a try, I really want to be smoke free but pray I will not gain weight. Yep, changed all my eating habits, take stairs at work (over 200 a day) and still gained. This time I am determined to get through it and the first year of being a non-smoker to hope the weight balances out after that. Thank again all for sharing ~ Sherri Scott

I have posted a few times before and am now posting on my 3 month anniversary of being smoke free. I am still taking Chanix, and plan to continue for about another month. My side effects are reduced to nil. Overall, it's worked great for me.

We took chantix full strength for four weeks then reduced at which time some side effects settled down ie slept better ,less gas. Crave levels seemed no different at 1/2mg twice a day as they did full dose.Stayed at least one week at each level before reducing again
while making sure crave levels were under control at each level. All people are different so monitor yourself closely . We both had thirty plus years
of smoking. We are now smokefree and chantix free but remembering as all addicts that we are one puff away from a pack a day habit. Good Luck All

Thank you so much for this lens.. I have been a smoker for over 30 years and have decided to try chantix. I'm up to almost 2 packs a day and I know its killing me.. will contact a doctor for rx soon.

    Thanks again,

It's been several weeks since my last post but I am happy to report I am still smoke free. Last smoke was on Feb 25th. Today is Day 84 and I feel great. No more cravings. It's almost as if I forgot that I was once a smoker. For those of you just starting out best of luck to you!

I will be 53 years of age this month and have been smoking for 37 years. I don't want the habit anymore. Today is my 5th day being smoke free. Side affects include mild constipation and interrupted sleep. Finally I do not have to worry about whether or not I stink of cigarettes. How liberating. I am shocked at how easy it has been thus far. Good luck to everyone on their journey. I am truly thrilled to be a non smoker!!!

We are at 50 plus days as non-smokers,chantix has worked for us. Some side effects but nothing we could not handle. started weaning off end of third week and are now today chantix free and still smokefree. Make sure you monitor yourselfs closely and adjust accordingly.

    Stay Strong

I am so happy I found this! I am currently on day 3 of taking Chantix. I have experienced no nausea or recognizeable side effects (knock wood), but I always take it after I've eaten breakfast & follow w/ a glass of water. I'm 40 years old and have tried every method on the market, including going Cold Turkey, Wellbutrin, all the nicotine patches & gum etc. etc. I am very hopeful that the Chantix is going to work & after reading all these comments I feel the hope is not unwarranted :) I have mild depression, and began taking Prozac a week before I started the Chantix, no ill effects. I don't feel suicidal, LOL! I'm so looking forward to not smelling like an ashtray, Not being embarassed when I pull up to a red light and have a cigarette in my hand, not having to leave a perfectly good conversation so that I can go smoke by myself outside. Wish me Luck, I'm on the road.

I started Chantix April 20, 2008. My fiancee and I (he's quitting cold turkey) had our last puffs on May 2, 2008. One puff and I thought I liked a full ashtray, he almost threw up after 2 puffs.

However I did read the Precautions that came with the box and it did say Menstrual problems for women. I can speak that for that one. I have been on birth control for years and I noticed it has disrupted my cycle. In the middle of my pack I have gotten my period and I am not happy about it.

Hopefully I can remain smoke free and not have to take another month of Chantix due to this problem or I will have one unhappy fiancee.

I'm in my 4th week of Chantix and my third week of being a non-smoker. My girlfriend has sent me several of the articles about possible suicidal effects, etc., (yea, thanks for the support!) and warned me about constipation.. however the only side effect I have has been the amazing dreams. And I haven't wanted a cigarette once since I smoked my last on on April 24th. I have forgotten to take a few (ok, four) at night.. and haven't noticed any difference in how I feel or wanting to smoke.

I was told to make sure I eat something when I take it - to avoid the nausea - and haven't been nauseated once. It's wonderful to finally be FREE of the smell, the cost, and everything else that goes along with smoking! I've tried other things in the past and nothing worked for me.. this has been amazing.

I know it doesn't work for everyone however I really don't see how someone could *NOT* try it, given how easy and effortless it CAN be...

I am an ex-25/day smoker on week 3.
I have tried zyban before but failed due to severe headaches whilst on the drug.
I have tried cold turkey before but failed on 3rd day due to blurred vision.
I classify myself as severe addict due to relatively high withdrawl symptoms.
    With Chantix:
    Pro's- You still get cravings(mostly mental),non physical.
Con's- no depression/suicidal thoughts as media states(if so, its not drug but the person). I was worried about this aspect but took the risk(think about it, you're killing yourself anyway) and rest assured it does not cause depression.
You need your personal reasons for quitting but this drug is so far the most unique.
Don't expect a miracle but this is the silver bullet against cravings.
Also good idea to mix with good books like Allen carr's "Easy way to Quit". Good luck everyone!!!!

I smoked for over 20 years and I am now on day 5 of not smoking. Chantix really helped! The cravings are still there but they are minor. Only side effect has been sleep interruptions (wake every 2-3 hrs), but I am not tired in the morning.

Has anyone had withdrawal symptoms after the Chantix is finished? I want to walk into this with eyes wide open and prepared. I am SO ready to quit. I am on first packet and looking forward to throwing away the chains that bind!

I have been on Chantix for a month to quit dipping Skoal. Chantix is quite amazing I don't have the desire to smoke. As far as side affects go I have had a few crazy dreams. So for all of you dippers out there Chantix isn't just for smoking.
  • Shana Apr 22, 2008 @ 8:23 am | delete
I started taking Chantix three days ago but I had to cut the dose in half because of the severe nausea. It is truly a miracle drug. I was not confident it would work because I am a 20 year smoker that was up to two packs a day. I had no faith in it. Right away I notice a decreased desire to smoke. Everyday I am less likely to smoke. In the past three days, I have went from 35-40 cigarettes a day to 1 or 2 maybe and not because I need to but just because I am used to smoking in a certain situation. Even when I do have the occasional cigarette, it is not enjoyable and I usually am only able to take a puff or two. I suspect in the next two weeks, my smoking habit should be a thing of the past. Willpower, faith, and Chantix is the perfect combination.
  • Michelle Apr 17, 2008 @ 12:04 pm | delete
I smoked for almost 40 years. I have never really tried to quit (always afraid of failure). I had my last cigarette 14 days after I started Chantix. I am now on day 33 smoke free. I have noticed that I am tired alot, and this pill seems to make me shake. I have not heard anyone else complain of this symptom. Chantix has helped me quit. I will admit you have to want to quit. The first couple of days were really hard for me, but the urges are alot less often and are short lived. I have had a couple of drinks with friends and it didn't seem to bother me much. I have cut down to only one pill a day in the morning. I don't seem to need it at night. If this can work for me anyone can quit.
  • GillyRoze Apr 16, 2008 @ 2:22 pm | delete
I looked at the package of Chantix after I payed $125 for it and was glad to learn that it was made in Germany. They seem to know what their doing over there. You are supposed to take .5 miligram tablets for one week while smoking and then on the eighth day you are supposed to quit smoking and begin taking 1 miligram tablets. By the 4th or 5th day I noticed I was smoking only because I was used to going for a cigarette. As per the instructions, I smoked my last stogie on the 7th night. The 8th day came and I was a non-smoker. I began taking the 1 miligram tablets and felt ALOT less anxiety like I normally did while trying to quit on other occasions. Let me note that I have tried absolutely everything to quit smoking including hypnotism and elctroshock treatments. I smokED Marlboro reds. The first day not smoking is toughest but not really tough at all. You simply dont have that nagging urge to smoke. Simply put Chantix works. I think its an amazing breakthru.
  • Barb Apr 2, 2008 @ 1:13 pm | delete
I was very nervous about taking chantix because of the suicidal rumors (I call it the suicide pill.. not funny, I know..) and having been treated for depression and anxiety in the past I knew I was at higher risk. Only side effects were some constipation and VERY vivid dreams (not scary, just vivid) I noticed by day 5 my beloved cigs tasted like burning wood (GROSS!) I have smoked a pack a day for 10 years and didn't believe chantix would help but having quit cold turkey and on wellbutrin in the past this has been by far the easiest quit ever. Yes, you have to want to quit but chantix is a huge assist in the journey. It worked great and today I celebrate 8 days smoke free. I have even had family members and friends smoke around me and I just don't want one anymore... WOW!
  • Dana Apr 2, 2008 @ 1:08 pm | delete
My last post was on my Day 9 on Chantix; I am now on Day 44 ~ SMOKE FREE! I am still using the prescribed 2 pills a day. Anyone starting this pill new, my only advice is do not take this pill on an empty stomach, that is what causes the sick feeling. Eat breakfast and down with 8oz of water. I still have urges to smoke mostly after eating and at night before bed. It's the habit that's hardest to break. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!

I posted here when I first started Chantix 5 weeks ago, and thought I'd do a follow up post about my side effects. The constipation/gas subsided after the 3rd week. I did go through a few days around week 3-4 of feeling extremely sick after I took the dosage, but it too went away after 4 days. I learned that this medication MUST be taken on a full stomach or the pain is awful in the tummy. Also, I have to drink a full glass of water immediately after I take it or I feel the nausea for 30 mins or so. I am getting ready to start week 6 and I plan to continue for a full 4 months total, tapering off the last 2 weeks with one pill a day. It is working wonders for me! The side effects do pass, except for the dreams, and I think they are lots of fun. Haven't had such vivid, fun dreams in years. I am 28 days smoke free today, have tried everything in the past 30 years to quit smoking, and this is the ticket! My DH loves the new me.

I quit 12/30/07 after 40 years. Chantix is great but strong will power is required. My only side effects were vivid dreams. Keep reminding yourself of the rewards for quitting. I only gained 5 lbs. but would rather be a heavy nonsmoker than a dead smoker. I recently had rotator cuff surgery and was fearful the stress would induce my desire to smoke. It didn't any more than normal cravings. I am living my dream as a non smoker. Good luck

I don't know if my story is different or not. I don't smoke cigarettes, but cigars Macanudos to be exact. I never smoked them like they were designed, without inhaling. I suck them down to my sox with every puff. I do believe that my smoking the cigars as I do gave me a greater dose of nicotine than your average cigarette so maybe it is normal not to just coast over the finish line.

I'm on day 3 after quitting with Chantix and I must say it was tough at first. Today is much easier than yesterday but I still went off on the wife. I'm a cad, I know. But day one of quitting was very painful. I do know that I would not have gotten through it without Chantix, I really mean that. I do know this though - I have smoked my last cigar and couldn't have done this alone. I'm curious - are any posters here using the support program? I am, and it is helping me.

I have been on this medication for 3 month. No smoking. This is a great product. Works like a charm! Major gas and constipation are the side effects. I have taken this drug before, last year but quit taking it and went back to smoking.

So, will take it for at least 6 month, and cut back on the dose.. I really want to stay off cigarettes.

I started "Chantix" Jan 01 and haven't had a smoke since Jan 08 2008. I Smoked for 10 years and only tried to quit cold turkey before the pills. It was nice that the drug seemed to decrease my anxiety and mood swings from initial attempts. A horrible 5 minute nausea in the mornings was my side effect but mainly was my fault. You shouldn't take these pills without a glass of water. 2 months in I dropped to 1 pill a day and now I am off the drug. Still smoke free. Does food taste better to anyone after quitting? I haven't noticed. Although I do eat a little more.

I quit in November '07 and am still "Clean". Like others, rotten side effects made me reduce my prescription dose to only once a day after the insomnia and "wig outs" got to be too much. I stopped taking the evening dose about week 3, with no problems or slip up's. In fact by week 9 I was forgetting to take even the one dose a day! Chantix works if you are ready, and after 21 years, I was ready.
  • Alice Mar 23, 2008 @ 10:20 am | delete
Chantix works. I dont smoke anymore. It suppresses the impulse to smoke the way a diet pill suppresses the urge to eat. I took it for 8 weeks, I had one bad side effect - acid reflux, but Prilosec resolved that. I allowed myself to smoke one or two a day for a month, then just stopped. I am still amazed at how easy it was. Do this for yourself and for the people who love you.

Happy Easter Everyone! It has been 31 days since my last puff! I feel GREAT! I actually stopped the chantix after just 3 1/2 weeks. I couldn't take the insomnia anymore. Smoking is a thing of the past for me. I know I have put on a few lbs, which I HATE..BUT I am working out and doing weight watchers. FOOD has really played a HUGE part in my quitting. I am determined to stay slim and still be a non-smoker! On day 21, of being smoke free, I had a HUGE craving. So bad in fact that I was scared to leave the house in fear that I may buy a pack. Luckily, my husband gave me a little pep talk, told me to look at my son's face, and remember WHY I QUIT. After 5 minutes, the urge passed...Thank God. I have yet to put myself in a situation involving smokers, like a club or casino. I don't want ANY temptation until I feel like I am 100% positive I can walk away. I am not quite there yet. But I will be soon. Keep posting with updates. And stay STRONG!!!
    WE CAN DO IT!!!!!!!
    Happy Easter !

    Hello everybody
I am a pharmacy technician and a 15 year long smoker.Whenever chantix just came out, I decided to do my own research before i give it a try. I asked every single person that i sold this drug to to let me know what it did to them whenever they come back to the pharmacy next month. I wanted to know what the side effects and outcome were before i even consider giving it a try.
Probably about 90% of people that got the chantix at our pharmacy quit smoking within the first 2 weeks. The other 10% either had bad side effects (one of them told me she had really bad stomachaches, she had to stop taking it) or had something major happening in their lives while taking it(one lost a son in a car accident).
believe it or not. one person that that quit smoking with the help of chantix, also quit drinking diet dr pepper, and she was a diet dr pepper addict lol.
I am taking the chantix now(day 3), i haven't noticed much change except the vivid dreams. i will post later.

Day 3 of taking the first week of pills. From the first day I will have to admit the urge subsited. I am looking forward to having the same results as all of you. I started smoking late in my life (39 now) and have been smoking for about 11 years. This is a great site and is very reassuring the programs works! Good luck to all of you being "smoke free".

Today is day 12 for me. Last smoked on Feb 25th and cannot believe how good I am doing. I smoked a pack a day (if not more) for well over 10 years. I tried to quit in the past (cold turkey) and only managed to go two days. This is truly working. Not feeling any side effects and though my cravings have seemed to increase over the past 24 hours they are in no way strong enough to get me to actually light up. My appetite has certainly increased but so be it. Best of luck to all of you. I will be checking in from time to time to report my progess. Have a great weekend!

Day 5. I am 50 and smoked for approximately 35 years. At my peak. I smoked 2 packs a day, and before quitting I was actually down to about five. I was so afraid to quit but made the decision to do so, even though I started taking the medication weeks ago. I would take a puff here and there, and realized they didn't even taste good anymore and that my smoker's cough would return when I did. It really is a miracle drug! Haven't really had any bad cravings yet. Since taking the pill the dreams can get pretty bad, lack of sleep and lots of gas and constipation. A friend of mine is now 6 mths. smoke free, so I am confident. I also read the EasyWay To Stop Smoking Book by Allen Carr and you read it and think this is "bunk" but it actually helped. I send my support to all here, it has been helpful reading everyone's comments!

I am on day 5 of being smoke free and to be honest, the first few days were pretty rough for me. I hurt for my smokes in the beginning, but now I am barely missing them at all. Only after dinner, and on my normal smoke breaks at work. This is the only thing that has ever worked for me. I am a 30 year smoker, started at 15. Got up to 2 packs a day during my 20s but cut back to about a pack for the past 15 years. My side effects are a little nausea, fitful dreams, dry mouth, and worse of all gas and constipation. But being off cigarettes is worth it to me, and I am thinking of cutting back on the evening dose as suggested by previous posters.

Well, I made it to Day 9. Side effects are creeping up on me. Gas & constipation mostly. However I'm not anxious or a nightmare to live with (as my husband stated)....I actually feel ok. Sense of smell and taste have changed alot. Write more later....

Definitely the best thing to come on the market yet! I'm on day 4 of not smoking. Not really craving it very often, but kinda "miss" the habit. But that will go away eventually. Good luck to all!!

Today is Day 3 for me of not smoking. I smoked for 21 yrs (I'm 38). This is my last personal goal for myself before I turn 40 and so far so good. I've also tried to quit before about 10 yrs ago with the patch, lasted a couple weeks, that's it. This pill seems to be working for me. I DO NOT have the cravings, no shakes and I'm not moody. What's hardest is unlearning the habit of smoking for me. My dreams are incredible, so vivid and I remember them each morning. If anything, I feel like I've actually calmed down on this pill. I'll write more later. Good luck everyone!!! Love to read your blurbs!

Day 10. I had my last puffer on Sunday at 10:10 P.M.
I have had only 2 moments of wanting to kill someone!
But after about 2 minutes, it passed. I haven't had any withdrawl. I feel very peaceful. I am committed. I will keep taking Chantix, for the entire time. Just to be on the safe side. I would love to be a spokes person for this pill. I was so worried about the anxiety of quitting, but with Chantix, I have had none. And I have a week from hell! My husband and son were both sick with the FLU, my son thowing up everywhere! I still DID NOT SMOKE!!! And believe me when I say....I SOOO WANTED TOO! I actually found that it helps me to say when I want a cig for some reason. When I kinda have a craving, I just say "I want to smoke". Then about 2 minutes later, it passes.
I am VERY PROUD of myself!!! Good Luck to all!!
I will pop back in from time to time!

First off, great site, and good job to all that were successful. I was a pack smoker and tried everything, from the patch, gum, replacement, and hynosis. Nothing worked,..UNTIL NOW!!! This stuff is the "Real Deal"...only IF YOU want to quit smoking...not your wife or husband making you. Few side affects, but nothing bad. I would strongly suggest to take the full regime of medication and don't stop after a month or so... Let the addiction, and the habit pass and give you some time to learn a new life...smoke free...cause it is different.

Day 14, still not smoking. I have been off and on Chantix for the last week and feel a decreasing need to take the pills. I usually take the morning pill but skip the evening one. Also, I found that it helps me to have something to do as a break during the day. For me, I work from home, so I started doing jigsaw puzzles. It keeps my hands moving and focuses my attention on the puzzle rather than the cravings. good luck to all.

Hi all! Well, I am on day two. No changes, and no side effects. I probably should have not read the list of possible side effects, because it's like I am waiting to get them! I am really scared about my quit date which is next Monday. I am such a routine person, and smoking has been routine for 20 years. I am determined though. I wish I would just wake up and say "WHAT'S A CIGARETTE? Wouldn't that be nice?
    I'll post again, later.

Just getting started!! Will finish 1st pack Tuesday. I am starting to taste the bitterness when I smoke. Not enough to make me stop yet. Hopefully this is the end of a long journey in trying to quit!!

I have smoked for about 12 years now, and like everyone else, I so desperately want to quit also. I got on Chantix about 2 months ago and it really worked! My cravings went down to nothing. I thought that I was strong enough to quit on my own, so I stopped the medicine. I was back to my old habits smoking just as much within a month. I realized that I wasnt strong enough, that it was the chantix that made me feel that way and I didnt take it for long enough. I am happy to report that I started back again on the Chantix this week. So for all those people that start, finish the medicine. It really works!! Good luck!!!!

So it's day 7, I'm amazed. I went from smoking 10-15 a day to 2 a day in the first week. Basically I was sick of planning my day around smoking and I hated that I couldn't enjoy times when I was in a non-smoking enviornment. Furthermore, I would go to the gym every morning and I'd see results, but they weren't great. I definately didn't get out of it what I put in. I could only contribute that to smoking. I feel so much better now. I love to be active but smoking always hindered my stamina. I can only say, I used to panic when I had 1 to 2 cigarettes left in a pack. After this first week, I could care less about it. It works for sure. Good luck to all.

I am into this for nearly three months now. I have not had a cigarette since my quit date and have found this quite easy with Chantix. I smoked for 35 years my friends and have tried quiting several tymes with no success. My biggest issue is that lately, I seem to be getting quite irratible. I am off the medication but ocassionally feel like I'm about to explode over some minor issue with my family. I can't help but wonder if there are withdrawal symptoms from Chantix. I am normally an easy going guy. Anyone else have this problem?

Wow! This is scary and exciting at the same time! I've been a constant smoker since the age of 15 and now I'm 36 (hmmmm 21 years). Luckily, I've never gone over a pack a day but this has been a monkey on my back, controlling my day, and I soooooo want to quit. I'm happy to say that I'm on day 4 with mild side effects (nausea). But in comparison, I'll take the nausea over the cancer every day of the week and twice on Sunday. I've tried the patch and I've tried the gum and never got past day 4 smoke-free. True, I haven't made my quit day yet but I feel exhilarated just knowing that this has such a high quit rate. My boyfriend is extremely happy and my 13 year old daughter is finally getting her wish. I chose to be around for a long time, healthy and happy. I just need to kick this habit and from all that I've seen, this is my best method. Today, I start taking 2 pills a day. Let's see what the days ahead hold. Write back with more details in the days ahead. Good luck to all

    Hello All!!!!
Well, I have my RX, and I have a plan. I am going to start taking the first pill on Feb 11, and be smoke free by Feb 18th...my mama'a birthday! She died 4 yrs ago from cancer, even though she quit 10 years before. I have been smoking for about 20 years. I am 38. I too, am a closet smoker. BUT....I am SOOOO DONE!
For me, even though I am very VAIN, and YES, I do want to live LOOOONG and BEAUTIFUL, it really is just an inconvenience. Since no one around me smokes, I stand out like a sore thumb! I am tired of planning my life around my ball and chain..(PUFFERS). We went to Disney World for Xmas, and I spent alot of time wondering where and how I was going to smoke! HOW PATHETIC!I am SOO DONE!
I want CONTROL. And by god.. I'm going to GET IT!
Thanks to everyone for sharing your stories.
I will let you know how I do. Say a little prayer for me! Oh yeah..my hubby said if I quit smoking..FOR GOOD, that in 1 year I can have ANY plastic surgery I want! He WILL be sorry! LOL

I was a smoker for 39 1/2 years, and like most of you, have tried everything there was to try. When I decided to try Chantix, I smoked for the first 2 weeks, and found myself looking at the clock and thinking it had been 6 hours since my last smoke and never had a craving. Finally I smoked my last one and have been smoke free ever since, 45 days now.The urges come and go but they are so weak and last such a short time that there is no stress at all.I am one of those who gets sick to my stomach after taking a pill with meals, but a mild discomfort now for a lifetime of smoke free is a fair trade off for me. The off taste in my mouth is something I'm dealing with - salads don't taste as good as they used too, and the dreams are actually nice to remember.I am so astounded - and so happy to be an X smoker. It has been 45 days for me now -and still counting! For anyone being skeptical, this is worth a try if you are serious about quitting.I tell any one who will listen how great Chantix is!!

Has anyone taking Chantix become pregnant while doing so? I have smoke for about 15 yrs now. Started when I was age 15 to be cool and didn't inhale. Now that I am 29 yrs old, the habit is still with me. I don't understand why I just can't kick the habit period. I can go days without smoking, then I smoke like crazy, etc. I have the precription at home now, but I'm nervouse about taking it cause my husband and I have been trying to get pregnant...Any thoughts anyone?

I have been on Chantix for 25 days now ... I do have sudden urges like in the morning or during class breaks and sometime after meals ... yet this is the usual time I generally take my prescription and about 15 minutes later and a little will power I don't need a cigarette ... I wonder if I shall be this powerful after week 12 without the Chantix ... None the less my fiance is very proud of me and my health and stamina has risen slightly ... I feel good about my self with a lot more time and money saved that I generally used to throw away to PM ... you know ... I must say that my dreams are a bit more vivid and realistic though ... lol TRY IT AND SEE HOW IT WORKS FOR YOU.

I smoked for 30 years and decided to quit when my sister started taking Chantix. I have been smoke free for 86 days. The only side effect has been gas. No urge to smoke most of the time. I get a small urge after meals but it passes quickly. My 3rd month of pills I decided to cut back to one a day and I have seen no in my urge to smoke. Thankfully the gas has gotten less.

I quit Dec 6th 2007, a pack a day smoker, for over 30 yrs, the very first time I have attempted to quit and it worked! With the help of Chantix have had side effects.. gas, constipation, sleep interuptions, dreams. Lowered dose to 1/2 last week still had sleep problems and I like my sleep and feel confident that I will stay smoke free so I lowered it to 1/2 pill a day and so far so good.

I am on the week 3 of Chantix. Smoked the first week, very little(2-4 at most/day)the second week, and now have not smoked at all in 6 days. I am experiencing side effects which are not so bad that I can't handle it. In looking for this blog I read about withdrawl from Chantix at the end of the 3 or more months. Right now I feel I could start taking one pill a day instead of two and try not to take the drug for so long. There is also several accounts of water retention, female issues and others which I would love to avoid. This drug works but I hate to take any drug. I think about smoking alot, however I have no real craving for a cigarette and I am psyched that I have gone this long. The smell of cigs on others is gross. I was a closet smoker, I am a mother of 4 and before quitting was sick and tired of sneaking cigs and needing to smother on the smelly lotion and chewing gum etc to cover it up. I want to be around when my kids grow up. Has anyone had problems after Chantix?

    Hi
I am on day 256 and counting. I smoked for 25 years and thought that this would never happen. I put my cigarette money to good use, they say to do something for your self well I took up fly fishing and find it a great refresher and brain dump event. It was not easy for me. I as most of you tried everything and said the heck with it. But Chantix was different for me - it worked. I had few side effects, the change in dreaming was different but ok, if I did not eat before taking the pill my stomach did get upset, and I had a funny taste in my mouth that I found out was taste buds coming back to life. And I gained 30 lbs which my wife thinks is a good thing. Do I still think about smoking yes, hey after all for me it was a 25 year habit not something you forget in under a year.
Good Luck to you all. And stay Quit.
    Marty

Been smoking over a pack a day since 1969- Tried every way to quit through the years but could not make it more than a day. I started the pills on Oct 8th and in a week I only smoked one cigarette throughout the day until Dec. 10th - It took 8 weeks - not one to quit but I stuck it out. Thought I would be one of those people that would never quit. Went though every side effect - sick, wild dreams, lack of sleep, food tasted like metal, but the pill still kept me down to one cigarette a day. After I quit, I tappered off to 1/2 pill in the morning and 1/2 at night and now I am smoke free. I did this over the holidays when my relatives smoked and drank wine with me - I had no problem. Can not believe I quit -

I took Chantix 7 months ago and i am still smoke free. I tried ever other method in the past and was not able to quit. I followed the instructions and quit on day 8. I took the pills for 30 days, though some people needed the full 90 or they went back. I paid out of pocket and it wasnt expensive, less then my smoking habbit. I was a smoker for 15 years, a pack a day. I had zero side effects and the cravings were practically nonexistant, no other method had that effect, i always had cravings. This pill is a miracle. I live with a smoker and still party with friends who smoke. I have no desire to smoke even when I am with them and/or out drinking. It actually is starting to bother me that when I go to the gym and sweat on the treadmill I notice the smell of smoke in my clothes becaues I live with a smoker. It makes me want to vomitt. I love that I do not smoke anymore and it was so easy to quit with Chantix. If you want to stop smoking get this pill, you will be glad you did!!!!

Its me, the former "Hacker" time for a new name since I can't remember hacking in the last week or more. This is easy considering how bad I used to be. A month ago at this time of night 8P ct. If I thought I would run out of smokes between now and in the morning when I leave for work, I would drive to the store to get some.

I recently started sleeping till 7a, used to get up at 6a just to smoke for an hour before getting ready for work.

I used to plan all of my dining out on the best smoking sections and not the food.

A few years ago, the town I worked in banned smoking in restraunts. I would drive to the next town over just so I could smoke during lunch.

I guess I have been smoking for more than 25yrs. I have never tried stopping until now. I went to my doctor and got my prescription of chantix. I was suprised that my insurance covered it which made it easier to get although I was willing to pay the full price. I am on day 8 and am down to 6 ciggarettes a day from almost 2 packs. I made my stop day 14. I have 6 more days. No side affects except I dream and remember my dreams. Sometimes a little nausea, but I am so glad I am doing this for my health and my children.

Today is my 15th day off the smokes. I have not had a single puff and all after 30 years 1 1/2 to 2 packs a day. Don't get me wrong, I still think about it, buts it just a thought and not a craving. I'm smoke free until I make the decision to pick one up. Thats the trick, never have the next one.
  • Lisa Jan 12, 2008 @ 11:42 pm | delete
I've been a smoker for 13 years. I've tried nicotine patches and gum but those never worked. I'm on Day 6 of using Chantix & am not craving for scigarette as much and there is a funky taste after I do smoke. This is a miracle drug. I do recommend Chantix for smokers that would like to quit.

I have smoked for almost 20 years. I am about a 2 pack a day smoker. I am on day 9 and still having 3-4 cigs a day. I have made day 12 my stop day. The beauty is, the desire is almost gone physically and the only time i smoke is out of habit. Having bad dreams nightly though.

19-year-smoker - 8 1/2 days off smoking with Ch'x. I wimped out on the original quit date, and was on it around 2 mos when I quit. But over that time, I started not caring if I smoked, and was going out to smoke ~2x/day at work, instead of ~10. I'm past my former "record," and it's been no sweat!

I used Chantix once before, (last summer), it did work. But do my own stupidity I picked up a smoke when I was having alot of stress going on and I fell off the wagon. Don't let me mislead you. The first few days when I quit were horrible. Desire to smoke was intense, often and long in duration. 5 days on Chantix and the desires are less intense, not as frequent and do not last as long. Chantix is working but will power and unlearning old habits are necessary.
  • Jim Jan 4, 2008 @ 12:13 pm | delete
Smoker for 40 years. I quit twice before with nicotine supplements. I am nicotine free now in my 5th day. Chantix seems to minimize the urge and intensity of desire to smoke. No strange dreams but I am dreaming a lot more and can recall my dreams which is not normal for me. I have a dry cough.

Last night I had drinks at a party and was around other smokers. Today had lunch at my parents and watched my dad hack/choke through six cigs over 1.5 hours. I had no problems either time. And to think last week my every moment was planned around smoking a pack and a half to two packs a day.

    Hi MG.
The dreams for me at least were never "weird", or scary in any way. Just more memorable, and intense. I actually enjoyed that aspect. I didn't find it troubling in any way, personally. I have various friends who have described the experience very similarly.

    Smokin Sue...

You can do this. The Chantix is doing its job and helping you with the physical aspects of smoking. You just need to work on the psychological addiction.
Don't forget about the help available on the Chantix website.
Hang in there. You can do this!

Oh, and aside from the problem described in my previous blurb, I am on day 12 of Chantix and it is going great! I must admit, on day 10 I had drinks with friends and smoked 2 cigs, but they felt forced and didn't even taste good. This is far better than the entire pack I usually smoke when I'm out

I've been smoking for close to fifty years. i'm on my 12th day of not smoking, except for one last saturday. I keep reading-how easy it is---Not for me. I'm on edge a lot of the time-almost nothing pleases me--I really do want to quit and I believe I can stay with it but it's no walk in the park!!!!!
