Chaos Magic Books

All books by Phil Hine are very good, but if you've never read anything on Chaos Magic before, I suggest you start with this book.

It is a great introduction to the art of chaos magic, one which is very easy and fun to read. There are no heavy and self-important words written in this book. Everything is explained with ease, in a language that practically anyone can understand, even if they've never read a book on magic before.

This is the book that got me started with Chaos Magic as well, so I could understand what was going on, before even doing my first sigil.

Hands-on Chaos Magic by Andrieh Vitimus is another great book on the topic of chaos magic that everyone interested to learn should read.

What I like about this book is that it gives you plenty of exercises to try right away - exercises that can yield at times very fast results. Nothing better on validating that magic works than having almost tangible results!

Once you've read Condensed Chaos, which introduces you to the subject in general, this book should be read next so you can finally start practicing.

This is a must read for any new magician - whether in Chaos magic or otherwise. It's one of the best (and most understated) introductions on magic ever in a very easy and even funny language that simply leaves you glued to your chair until you finish the (rather short) book.

I might go as far as say that even before you learn about Chaos Magic, pick up this book, read it to get a basic understanding of magic at all, and then start reading the books I've recommended before!

Whether you believe in magick or not, whether you want to practice or not, you should read this book as it will open your mind to tons of interesting new ideas.

And no, just in case you're wondering about the title....this has nothing to do with sex!

High Magic is not specifically writter for Chaos Magic, but I highly recommend you read it while studying CM. It is a great introduction on lots of aspects on magic, one that will leave you with a foundation that is necessary in any magic work (unless you choose the slow path of going through one of the other ceremonial magic methods for years until you're proficient at it - and then move on to the next - but who has the time for this anyway?).

Frater U.D. is one of the most respected personalities in the magickal community. His books are all very useful to read. He is actually Europe's current best known practical magician and occult author of today.

This is NOT a Magick 101 book! Liber Null is the authority on the subject of chaos magic, but beware - unless you've read something else (like the books above) on chaos magic, you will be put off by it. The reason is because it's rather dry and some people find it heavy to read. But to really learn the most you can learn without actual practice on chaos magic, this is the best book to get.

And once you read it, read it again...and again. Some things will sink in only after you've read it a couple of times. And don't forget to do every exercise in the book - there are plenty for practicing.

I like this book, it's so much more than just about chaos magic.

The book introduces you to various magickal concepts including trance work, enchantment, divination, and even some of the higher forms of spiritual development. Taking action on the exercises that Chapman lays out produces some intriguing results.

The author assumes no previous knowledge, only a willingness to explore what magick offers, yet it's apparent to anyone with a background in the subject that Alan Chapman is drawing on a wide range of experience, from classical Crowleyean Magick to eastern metaphysics, and back again to Discordianism and Chaos Magick. Chapman's writing-style is humorous, direct, seductively logical, and his enthusiasm for the benefits of magick is both tangible and infectious.

Stephen Maces "Stealing the Fire from Heaven - A Technique for Creating Individual Systems of Sorcery" is often touted as an excellent starting point for the aspiring magician/sorcerer as well as the experienced magician.

If you've heard of Austin Osman Spare (the father of chaos magic), then you might have heard how difficult it is to read his book (it is, I've read it and have understood very little on my first go with it). This book makes it easy for everyone to learn about chaos magic and its practice, and it explains more in details Spare's Alphabet of Desire, which helps you learn more about sigil magic.


Highly recommended!

I was lucky to find a cheaper version of this book from an Amazon private seller, and it was worth every cent or penny!

Currently this book is out of print, but you can find now and then books sold by sellers at Amazon or Ebay. If you can get hold of this book, you practically have everything you need to get started with sigil magic - the main and high point of chaos magic in general when it comes to actual practice.

Frater U.D. has performed a great service in making Austin Osman Spare's works comprehensible to the average magickal practitioner.

The Book Of Results is, along with Practical Sigil Magic, the best book on hands-on techniques on doing sigil magic, as part of your Chaos Magic study.

This book is also sadly out of print, and second hand editions can be quite expensive. Once you get hold of this book, never let it go from your sight!

Anyone reading Frater U.D., Peter Carroll, or Phil Hine will find that this book will fill in some small gaps in the information given by these three authors as to how to go about creating a sigil. Again, an excellent little book.
