Character Chain

Halloween Art Activity

This simple art activity can be used for nearly any holiday, or just any day of the year. Simply switch the colors, and possibly the theme.

Making a paper chain is simple, it works as a conversation starter, and the best part is that nothing has to be 'accurate' for it to look good. The best part about this activity? You're able to incorporate fine motor skills, discussion, fun activity, social skills, all while building character.

Character Words

This is a step that you decide when, and how, you use it. This is a fun way to discuss character with children.

If you are in a classroom you may want to start off with a quick discussion. What is character? What are some character traits? What does it mean to be a good friend? Get students thinking about what it means to have character.

If you are at home, depending on the age of the children that you're doing this activity with, have the same type of discussion. If you're have a certain issue at home..try to focus on that specific trait. For example, if you're child isn't behaving focus on behavior. But remember, try to relate it to Halloween if you are doing this as a spooky activity.

The list below are various character words and phrases. These are just suggestions. We tried to relate these to Halloween, but feel free to change these to fit your needs.

  • Behave
  • Don't eat all of your candy in one night! Think healthy!
  • Be friendly to other trick-or-treaters
  • Be responsible!
  • Show respect to your neighbors property!
  • Be kind to fellow trick-or-treaters!
  • Say thank you.
  • Behave by listening to your parents.
  • Be kind by sharing your candy

Step 1

orange, black, construction paper, orange and black, halloween activities, halloween chainCutting out the paper. One of the best things about this project is that accuracy doesn't really matter. It's great to work on motor skills with children, whether they are just learning or need the extra practice, and if you mess up you don't need to worry about it! The imperfections with add more character to the chain.

You can use construction paper, which in this case we chose black and orange for Halloween, or you can use any other type of paper that you will be able to cut and decorate.

Cut the paper into strips, the size doesn't really matter but we don't suggest making the chain more than 2-3 inches thick.

Step 2

After you have your pieces cut out write down your character words or phrases on the pieces. We chose to focus on Halloween. Some phrases we wrote included:

- Show respect to others' property!
- Respect the rules!
- Be friendly, share with your buddies!
- Think healthy! Let an adult check your candy before you eat it.

Craft Supplies

Don't have time to get to the store or not finding what you want when you shop locally? Order online.

Step 3

Tape or glue the chain together. You will need to start by taping the ends of one chain together, and attaching the other paper from there.

That's it! What did your children or students learn? Did they have fun while doing a simple craft and still learning about character? What did you learn from them?

Don't forget!

After you complete your chain you'll need to display it so that others can appreciate the beautiful craft you just created!
