Yeah..as far as I know, I have been considered a good employee. One of my strengths is my ability to get along easily with anyone. This helps to break barriers and ease communication, which in turn builds a good reputation. Enjoyed your lens!
  • tammanasule Feb 22, 2012 @ 4:13 am | delete
A good guide to help an employee become "the best" at workplace. Following manners at workplace when things become hectic and workload increases is very difficult. But a good employee is surely the one who has this quality of remaining stable at any critical circumstances. Your lens is really helpful for this.
  • ddebra Feb 10, 2012 @ 10:02 am | delete
You're so right! It's so tempting to start gossiping about people - especially when you're feeling frustrated with them - but, truthfully, it usually backfires. Best to stay professional and express your grievances with the person directly. Gossiping can easily make you look petty and mean-spirited, and undermine people's trust. My advice: follow the good tips in this article above.
  • jrr2112 Feb 7, 2012 @ 4:30 pm | delete
Great lens, very informative. Attitude is one of the most important determinants of a successful employee. For those who are just starting out, it becomes even greater a differentiator!

  • PollyFreakingAnna Jan 19, 2012 @ 4:34 am | delete
Very good! If you have to work, you might as well figure out how to enjoy it! A few times I had not-so-great jobs, but I decided to like them, and it worked. I only hit about half of your "Excellent Employee" traits, but I had everyone at my last ick job yelling out, "Yea!"

Read this again without thinking about employment. It's a LIFE manual!

Paul, these are excellent suggestions and resources. I especially appreciate the depth you provide. Anyone who reads this is sure to become a better employee. Anyone who makes a plan and follows it, using your advice, is sure to improve their standing in the workplace.

I found this lens so valuable that I featured it on my "Five Deadly Resume Sins" lens. Sure to be useful to job hunters as they prepare for their interviews--just knowing what employers are looking for.

I worked in low-wage employment placement for a couple of years and it was amazing how many people simply wouldn't go to work or do their jobs. Sure, they aren't glamour jobs, but most of us have done our share of this work in our professional development. My parents taught me a work ethic when I was a teenager and young adult, and I can see that our society needs a lot more of that starting at the family and school levels. Responsibility and accountability should be basic things that we can all embrace going to a new job.
  • WorkitSmart Sep 2, 2011 @ 11:28 am | delete
WOW! This is an excellent lens! Gave you a big thumbs up! Hey, you could have a theme going here and also write about how to be a good entrepreneur..

  • PeteSchultz Sep 1, 2011 @ 2:54 pm | delete
I have to agree...in my office, we had an employee who did not complete daily assigned tasks, forgot to return phone calls, frequently announced an inability to get anything done because of the excess amount of work assigned while spending hours on personal phone calls and printing color photos of pets....shot with the company camera, with company supplikes, printed on company paper. Upon being released, there was much agonizing and threats to seek relief through the courts. Everyone in the office could see this coming and quietly urged better work habits, to no avail. Your advice is sound!

This lens is a good reminder about what makes an employee great. Many of the things I already know but I don't always put into practice. I think that "team player" is one of the least understood concepts in the workplace. We're supposed to work like a team but honestly, I don't think most of us really knows what that means.

Good to know what qualities employers look for in employees. I will keep these in mind for when I have a job again.
  • grannysage Aug 3, 2011 @ 11:33 pm | delete
In 7 working days I shall cease to be a good employee. In fact I am not going to be an employee at all. My husband and I are going to be full time rv-ers. But I have tried to be a good employee at all of my jobs. I discovered that different generations have different approaches to work. In my generation we tend to show up for work every day and have a strong work ethic. Changing jobs is hard for us. Those in younger generations do not fear changing jobs if they are dissatisfied with their workplace. I do feel that managers and supervisors need to learn more about how to motivate employees rather than just "manage" them.

Being good employees is really good. Great. Yet if one wants to pursue his or her life of being a boss, one has to learn to learn while underemployed, educate oneself, and understand how to command an employee by understanding his or her own needs while underemployed

A good employee does things without looking for a direct reward. Everyone should always try to give their very best because it's the right thing to do not just because you'll get rewarded...
  • Sire01 May 29, 2011 @ 1:27 am | delete
As an employer all I wanted from my employees was to turn up for work on time and to do their job properly. They had to treat the customers with respect and made sure they were always on their best behaviour. As they were paid way above the award rates I expected them to do the rare extra task with a smile on their face and not to winge about it.

Not too much to ask I would have thought but finding someone that would fit these qualities was a difficult task.

An employee can be nice or unpleasant, the only thing I care about is that they are doing their job, you wouldn't believe how many people come in to work and then slack off or stare into space and don't work. That's the only thing that I cannot tolerate in an employee.

An excellent tutorial and a great refresher for those that must work with other people. Something that should be referred to now and then to keep sharp! Excellent and inspiring work on your part! In my home office, I just have to get along with me and sometimes even that is a problem, lol!
  • cwimmer77 Dec 2, 2010 @ 9:23 am | delete
i would rather work from home than be a good employee and help someone else make money. BUT i have yet to accomplish this so thanks for the advice.

This is one of my favorite lenses! My lens provides resume tips from an HR perspective. But getting a job, being a quality employee and longevity is all part of the game. You provide information that is very valuable. Too often employees get stuck in the daily grind and do no more than the basic requirements of their position. Your advise is EXCELLENT and is something all employees (at the top and bottom of the ladder) should keep in mind. I've emailed a link to your page to my entire staff.

Great info. I think this list is telling and something that eludes many employees that aren't that "good". Technical knowledge and skill are only one item listed among 10. You MUST have the skills, but there are other very critical aspects to being a good worker.

Great lens! I have always considered myself as a good employee because I do my job and I do it well. I didn't realize until now that there are still so many things to consider before I could become a good and noticeable employee. I better start practicing and embracing the other qualities to become a better employee then. 5*

If your boss see you do something un professional, should you tell him or her that you admit your wrong and have learned your lesson or let it go and let him forget it too and hope he doesnt think about it again in the back of his mind?

Yup, those qualities sound just about right to round out the perfect employee. However, I don't think I fit all of that criteria! Especially the participation in company parties part. I always liked to get out of those! Great work, Squid Angel blessed.

The topic is great, but if you want modules to be more readable, then maybe you could split topics. Or for example at least use bold to bring up ten things that make a great employee etc.

    Keep doing quality lenses! :)
