10 Tips For Better Charcoal Grilling
Here are 10 tips that might make your next charcoal grilling adventure a good one.1. Plan ahead. Purchase your charcoal, lighter fluid (if necessary) wood chips, meat and any other essentials before you attempt to grill.
2. Clean your grill. Make sure your grill is clean enough for cooking, a simple grill brush can do the trick, if the grill is very dirty, soak it in 1 part degreaser and 3 parts water, scrub the grill and rinse or hose the grill off.
3. Get a good hot bed of charcoals ready for cooking most burgers, steaks, chicken, pork etc. If you can hold your hand over the top of the grill for more than 3 seconds your grill temp is not hot enough.
4. Marinates, rubs, and other seasonings put on the meat before grilling are the best way to add flavor. High temp grilling will burn off most bbq sauces if put on to soon in the cooking. Wait until the last few minutes of cooking before putting on sauces or you will just get burnt crust on your meat.
5. Use your fingers to tell if steaks are rare, medium, well-done etc. Feeling the flesh is the best method of testing the desired outcome of your meat.
6. Try to keep the flipping of your meat to one time per side. This keeps the meat tender. Excessive flipping, pressing and turning creates dry meat.
7. Grill/steam veggies in foil pouches. Put the pouches to the outside of the grill to prevent burning.
8. Enjoy toasted marshmallows and smores after you are done grilling, the charcoal temp is just right to slowly heat and toast marshmallows on sticks or skewers.
9. Don't forget to make sure the charcoal is completely cold before discarding. This could take hours, you can speed up the process of course by pouring water over the used charcoals.
10. Clean and store your grill. The heat of the charcoal can naturally clean the grill, some additional light cleaning may be all that you need. Store your grill out of the elements if possible or cover it for a long life.
