Vote for your favorite cause

Our charities have been working hard! They're making lenses, promoting their cause, and rallying volunteer support for a great new project.

In the last week, the charities below met our challenge to make 10 awesome new lenses! As a result, they've been entered in a special cash giveaway - the opportunity to win $3,000!

Meet them, greet them, and vote for your favorite. And hurry - voting closes at 9pm EST on Tuesday, July 21st. We'll announce the winner on Wednesday!

The Rules

Every contest has them; these ones are easy.

The things you SHOULD do:
* Yes! Invite your volunteers and friends and family to vote!
* Yes! Blog about this, put it in your newsletter, on your website, on your sandwich board.
* AND, it's even cooler if, when you're done voting, you make a lens for your favorite charity. That's also free, and over the course of time could add up to major moola.

The stuff to stay away from:
* No, don't vote more than once.
* No, don't vote with multiple accounts. If we find you are, we'll cancel all your votes.
* No, there's no trick. We're really giving away $3,000 to one charity on this poll.
* No, don't stop there! Go make a lens for your favorite charity. See the last Yes item above. :)

The Winner is...

Congratulations to Marine Parents. This partner charity has won our July 2009 $3,000 giveaway.

Over 30 charities took the first step towards entering this contest, and eight made the final cut. We're excited so many people took the time to help our charities, by taking the time to create lenses and vote.

This is the beginning of a great new future for charity on Squidoo.

Which lucky active, hard-working charity will it be next time? Keep an eye on the Charity Network Newsletter for future contest and training details. (Not yet a subscriber? Join us!)

Our favorite new lenses

Each of the charities above created ten new lenses, and here are some of our favorites.

What would our charities do with $3,000?

The first step of entering this contest was to write a short essay about what each charity would use this money for. Here are some of the great causes $3,000 could aid (paraphrased).
  • Epic Farms
We are in the process of building new visitor-friendly stalls and petting/demonstration areas for our horses. In addition to finishing Phase One of our facilities, we will also need to purchase rather expensive liability insurance prior to allowing visitors on to the property.

  • Viva la Musica
After a couple of standing-room-only concerts in 2008, we expanded to a larger (and more expensive) venue at Carrington Hall in Redwood City. In addition we have reached out to students at Hillsdale High School and West Valley College who joined us for a recent concert in Carnegie Hall. This donation would be used to subsidize our higher venue costs as our fan base grows into it, and to provide scholarships to students who want to participate in our programs.

  • Dolphin Communication Project
For starters, we'd stop confusing male dolphins with female dolphins. It sounds silly, but it can be rather challenging to make out the subtle markings on their underbellies that reveal their gender. We are desperately in need of a High Definition (HD) camera to replace the clunky camera currently in use in our underwater video housing. And if there's money left over, a solid-state audio recording device to record the high frequency clicks these dolphins use for echolocation. And more... As a small non-profit with limited funds, a $3,000 boost would go a very long way indeed!

  • Wildlife Forever
The winners from our annual State Fish Art contest are invited to the Mall of America for the State-Fish Art Expo to receive recognition and prizes. It is an expensive effort ($10,000). During the past 10 years, we've had sponsors to cover nearly all the expenses, but this year, nearly all sponsors have left or converted to in-kind donations leaving Wildlife Forever scrambling to find the money. We truly are in desperate need.

  • A Day of Hope
Last year each basket cost $17 to put together complete with a turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie, and all the other Thanksgiving goodies. So, $3,000 divided by $17 equals 176 families that would be fed by Squidoo's donations. Can you imagine that? That would be 176 needy families who could receive a fabulous Thanksgiving meal that might not have had one otherwise!

  • Covenant House
We'd put the money to use in our outreach program - rescuing young people from the dangers of life on the street. It costs us about $116 per kid in our outreach program, so $3000 would help rescue 25 teenagers from harm's way.

  • Marine Parents
We could certainly use the $3,000 to help with the renovations of our new corporate office and/or for the shipping costs to send care packages to our Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan in August.

  • National Wildlife Federation, Alaska Regional Center
This project will provide much-needed employment in Native Alaskan villages that are facing job loss and soaring heating fuel and food prices, resulting in urban migration. The Weatherization Training program will train youth still in high school how to conduct energy efficient carpentry repairs on homes and businesses, while also providing information about Green Jobs available in Alaska in the energy and natural resource fields.
