Charity baby knit patterns for jumpers and hats

Charity baby knits can be sent to your local World Vision or Save the Children collection centres. These knits are sent to poor African and Asian communities to keep little babies warm. They are simple to make and can be made in bright colours using leftover wool. It's important not to make all white knits as this is a symbol of death in some cultures. See patterns below

CHARITY BABY KNITS 

PATTERN FOR BABY JUMPER

Worked in 1 piece

8 ply wool
5mm needles (tight knitters)
4.5mm needles (loose knitters)

Cast on 44 stitches

Work 18 rows in K2 P2 rib
Work 30 rows stocking stitch

Cast on 12 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows
At the same time change to K2 P2 for sleeves
Rib 22 rows

Next row: rib 21, cast off 26, rib 21
Next row: rib 21, cast on 26, rib 21
Work 22 rows in K2 P2 rib

Cast off 12 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows
Work 30 rows stocking stitch
Work 18 rows K2 P2 rib

4 ply wool
size 2.75mm needles (size 12)
size 3.25mm needles (size 10)

Using no. 12 needles, cast on 91 stitches

Knit 3 rows

Change to no. 10 needles

Knit 1 row, increasing 5 stitches evenly - 96 stitches. Beginning with a purl row, stocking stitch 17 rows.

1st (dec) row: (K2 tog, k10) to end,
Stocking stitch 3 rows
2nd (dec) row: (k2 tog, K9) to end,
stocking stitch 3 rows
3rd (dec) row: (k2 tog, K8) to end,
stocking stitch 3 rows
4th (dec) row: (K2 tog, K7) to end,
Purl 1 row
5th (dec) row: (K2 tog, K6) to end,

Continue in this way, decreasing 8 stitches on next row and 4 following alternate rows - 16 stitches.

Break off yarn, leaving a long end. Thread end through remaining stitches, pull up and secure, then join back seam.
