What Will You Find in This Lens?

The following excerpt is copied from the Squidoo statement regarding fundraising through the new Direct Donation modules.

We at Squidoo passionately believe in creating new ways to support good causes online. By making a donation from this page, you are sending money directly to that organization, in whatever amount you want. We don't touch it. We don't even see it. The author of this page doesn't either. And if you made it this far, thanks for caring.

This statement is specifically talking about the new Direct Donation modules that are presented on the lens collection for each of the charities featured here. I have included it here so that you will see the dedication that Squidoo has to the founding principle of charitable support.

That is one of the most beautiful aspects of being a part of Squidoo. They donate so much to so many awesome organizations and that is only one of the wonderful things about Squidoo.

Now...
Here is a list of the contents of this Lens.
Thank you for visiting and thank you for caring.

Charity Selection

We each have our own choices to make regarding how we will support and who we will support.

Monetary contributions are one way you can give to an organization that you want to support.

Promoting the charity is another.

Both ways of contributing make an enormous inpact and help out a lot.

Who Is? - Find Out About The Charity Organizations

You have decided to contribute time, energy, and/or money to a charity but, you wonder who to give to or how to find out if the organization is doing what they say they are doing.

How do you find out?

Throughout this lens I will be sharing information links and contact information. I will also include links to articles about the work each organization is doing and anything I can find that will help you to get your questions answered.

If you have any specific questions that you have not found answers to please feel free to post them to the guestbook at the end of this lens and I or other readers of this lens will strive to answer them for you or direct you to the best place to find the answers.

The Organizations are listed in alphabetical order

Covenant House Programs

Food, clothing, shelter for a night: given freely, with no questions asked, no strings attached, for any hurting, homeless youth who will knock on our door tonight.
"Programs" is just another way of saying that we promise to keep loving these children unconditionally, because a covenant never quits, never fails, and never stops believing in the future.

An organization like Covenant House is only as good as what goes on face to face between youth and staff members. Once a youth decides to stay with us, our staff begins the hard, day-to-day work of building a plan for the future with each resident. Sometimes the result is the absolute heartache of losing a kid back to the street. Sometimes, the result is the rebirth of a young life society had long left for dead.

Donors Choice

Donors Choose helps teachers fund projects and the donor can choose which project they would like to contribute to. When you make you donation through this Charity Finder lens your contribution will go to the project with the most urgent need.
The following is an excerpt from Donors Choice How It Works

DonorsChoose.org is a simple way to provide students in need with resources that our public schools often lack. At this not-for-profit web site, teachers submit project proposals for materials or experiences their students need to learn. These ideas become classroom reality when concerned individuals, whom we call Citizen Philanthropists, choose projects to fund.

Proposals range from "Magical Math Centers" ($200) to "Big Book Bonanza" ($320), to "Cooking Across the Curriculum" ($1,100). Any individual can search such proposals by areas of interest, learn about classroom needs, and choose to fund the project(s) they find most compelling. In completing a project, donors receive a feedback package of student photos and thank-you notes, and a teacher impact letter.

Every Little Bit Helps

If every visitor could give $1, that would add up very quickly and would make a world of difference.

If you are able to give more, that is great, but don't let yourself be fooled into thinking that your $1 or $5 will not make a difference for any of these organizations?

Every little bit helps!

EcoTrust

Ecotrust was created in 1991 by a small group of diverse people who sought to bring some of the good ideas emerging around conservation back to the rain forests of home. We set out to characterize this region and articulate a more enduring strategy for its prosperity.

These efforts are predicated on the notion, gaining an ever wider currency, that economic and ecological systems are mutually interdependent. To this relationship Ecotrust and others have sought to add a third "e" - social equity - to ensure that economic development awards benefits to all the region's citizens. Economy, ecology, equity: the triple bottom line.

Five integrated program areas, supported by our sophisticated tools and services, define and guide our efforts to build Salmon Nation:

The five integrated program areas include:
*Native Programs,
*Fisheries,
*Forestry,
*Food & Farms, and
*Citizenship.

Operation Helmet

Operation Helmet provides upgrade kits for soldiers to improve the performance of their helmets. The kits are available to any soldier who needs one and they generally pay out of their own pocket to receive the kit. Your contribution can help provide these upgrade kits so that the soldiers do not need to pay for them out of their own pockets.

The following statement is copied from the Operation Helmet website
Our philosophy is quite close to that put forth by the noted philosopher, columnist, comedian, economist and actor, Ben Stein: "I came to realize that life lived to help others is the only one that matters and that it is my duty, in return for the lavish life God has devolved upon me, to help others He has placed in my path. This is my highest and best use as a human."

Thanks to you: 39,511 helmet upgrades sent - Helping Prevent Traumatic Brain Injuries
...and the requests keep coming in! Let's keep the goods flowing!

Room To Read

Room to Read provides books, librarys, School Rooms, Reading Rooms, and much more to developing countries who do not have the resources to provide these items to their children. We consider a library a given in most countries. In the countries served by Room to Read, these are luxuries. Your contribution will help Room to Read continue the extraordinary work that they do and allow every child the opportunity to learn to read and to have the resourced to nurture this opportunity that most of us take for granted. By supporting Room to Read, you will be nurturing a mind, a heart, and the future of our planet.

The following is an excerpt from Better World Books about the Room To Read Organization
"Room to Read focuses on countries in the developing world that are struggling to educate their children, by building schools, libraries, computer and language labs, funding long-term scholarships for girls and publishing local language children's books. Since its inception in 2000, Room to Read has worked in Nepal, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Sri Lanka, Laos, Zambia, and South Africa.

Better World Books began its partnership with Room to Read in Spring 2004, following the December 2003 tsunami. Book drives administered by Better World Books have raised more than $300,000 for Room to Read, which is enough to build 18 schools, or to finance long-term education scholarships for 116 young girls."

Soldiers' Angels

Soldiers' Angels is involved in so many dynamic services to U.S. soldiers, it would be a great to simply look at a few of those projects and see for yourself. Every project helps soldiers and their families by uplifting their spirits, nurturing mind, body, and emotion, as well as being a huge benefit to the general welfare of all of us. If you are familiar with the USO, you might think about Soldiers' Angels as an extension of that service that is operated by everyday people who want to make a difference in the lives of those who serve our preservation of liberty and freedom.

Soldiers' Angels is a volunteer-led nonprofit that encompasses over 20 different teams and programs. They send letters, care packages, and comfort items to deployed American service members, and we support their families here at home.

The Soldiers' Angels and certainly ANGELS! The organization coordinates dozens of projects that make a big difference to troopers and their families.

These are a few of the highlighted organized teams and projects that the Soldiers' Angels are coordinating.
