Charles Eastman and the Boy Scouts of America

Charles Eastman (Ohiyesa) was a Native American who had a profound impact on our country in a way you may not be aware of. If you want to understand the impact this man has had on our society think of the impact the Boy Scouts of America has had. Here is the story of a great man who was a medical doctor, healer, published author whose writings have been translated into many languages, an advocate for his people even to Washington D.C., and has influenced the people of this country in a very positive way.

Why I think Charles Eastman is great.

He was raised in a teepee in the traditional ways of the Sioux or Dakota people and eventually graduated from Dartmouth, then from Boston University with a medical degree. He went back to his people at the Pine Ridge reservation as a physician and was there before, during and after the massacre at wounded knee where he cared for the wounded. He defended his people from corrupt Indian agencies and worked as a lobbyist to Washington D.C for the benefit of the Native American. Here is a man that quietly worked to change the perception of the growing dominant culture to a real understanding of who the Native American really is. His hope was to preserve a way of life he knew was waining and eventually together with Ernest Thompson Seton helped to create the institution of the Boy Scouts based in large part on Native American life ways here in the United States.

According to the Wikipedia, Robert Baden-Powell started Scouting in 1907 in Great Britain and the movement began to grow overseas, although it is not clear from what I have read where these two movements converge. Charles Eastman began his association with the boy scout organization in 1910.

Wikipedia on Boy Scounts

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is the largest youth organization in the United States, with over five million members in its age-related divisions. Since its founding in 1910 as part of the international Scout Movement, more than 110 million Americans have been members of the BSA.

The BSA seeks to train youth in responsible citizenship, character development, and self-reliance through participation in a wide range of outdoor activities, educational programs, and, at older age levels, career-oriented programs in partnership with community organizations. For younger members, the Scout method is used to inculcate typical Scouting values such as honesty, good citizenship, and outdoors skills, through a variety of activities such as camping, aquatics, and hiking.

The BSA is a constituent member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement. The traditional Scouting divisions are Cub Scouting for boys ages 7?10, Boy Scouting for boys ages 10?17 and Venturing for young men and women ages 14?21. Learning for Life is a non-traditional subsidiary that provides in-school and career education. (registration required) The BSA operates traditional Scouting locally through units sponsored and operated by churches, clubs, civic associations, educational organizations and the like. Units are led entirely by volunteers who are supported by local councils using both paid professionals and volunteers.

The influence of Scouting on American society is frequently cited by both its advocates and critics. In addition to nostalgic memories of campfires kindling friendships, prominent leaders in various fields of endeavor have credited the skills they learned in Scouting as helping mold them into successful citizens. Critics have called the BSA's membership restrictions pertaining to avowed atheists and homosexuals unfair, resulting in litigation in various state and federal courts.

In conclusion

Here is an excerpt from Charles Eastman writings.

"The true Indian sets no price upon either his property or his labor. His generosity is limited only by his strength and ability. He regards it as an honor to be selected for difficult or dangerous service and would think it shameful to ask for any reward, saying rather: "Let the person I serve express his thanks according to his own bringing up and his sense of honor. Each soul must meet the morning sun, the new sweet earth, and the Great Silence alone!..."

I find it amazing, and maybe you do too, that an organization like the Boy Scouts that is considered to be an "all American" institution is actually majorly influenced by the philosophy of a people who only a short 100 years ago where considered the "enemy". Think of the incredible influence it has had on our young people over all these years. Thanks to the confidence, vision and drive of Ohiyesa, Charles Eastman.
