Singer and Song Writer Extraordinaire!

I come by my love of Charles Trenet naturally. You see, genetically I am 1/2 French/Belgian and even though I do not understand French I can feel the meaning in my bones when I hear the French man sing "La Mer", "The prolific French song writer/singer began his career at the age of 20 in 1933 and continued making albums and performing until 1999. I discovered this gem of French singers while searching for music for a video I was putting together for my mother's 70th birthday. I was absolutely undone by the song "Verlaine" which I used on the soundtrack for her video. This song was also used for the soundtrack of the movie "French Kiss" starring Kevin Kline and Meg Ryan.

Charles Trenet was among the last of his kind of singer, a holdover from the era of pre-World War II France and the prime of Maurice Chevalier, as well as singer/composers such as Georges Brassens and Léo Ferré. Originally an art student, Trenet turned to singing in his early twenties, initially in partnership with pianist Johnny Hess in a duo billed as "Charles and Johnny."
Charles Trenet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
harles Trenet (born Louis Charles Auguste Claude Trénet, 18 May 1913, Narbonne, France - 19 February 2001, Créteil, France)[citation needed] was a French singer and songwriter, most famous for his recordings from the late 1930s until the mid-1950s, though his career continued through the 1990s. In an era in which it was exceptional for a singer to write his or her own material, Trenet wrote prolifically and declined to record any but his own songs.
RFI Musique - - Charles Trenet
Charles Trenet, the last of the legendary French chanson stars, recently celebrated an incredible sixty years in the music business - and he's still going strong today ! Trenet will inevitably go down in music history as the man who wrote the unforgettable "La Mer".

"La Mer"

What is not to love about this breathtaking song that describes the beauty of "La Mer" or translated "The Sea"

"Beyond the Sea"

Basically this song is "La Mer" with completely different lyrics in English and one of my favorite "happy" songs. This video is a clip from the movie "Beyond the Sea" about Bobby Darin's life starring Kevin Spacey. It is definitely worth seeing if you haven't already and worth seeing again if you have. Spacey does an impeccable Bobby Darin and yes, he performed the music himself for the movie.

"La Romance de Paris"

This is a fun video of a young Trenet engaging the passerby's in this sing along of "La Romance de Paris" on the streets of Paris. I love it and think you will too.

I love Charles Trenet; Douce France always brings tears to my eyes, and I can't go near the sea without hearing La Mer in my head. Great lens.
