Charm Bracelets

Who would have thought that it was the soldiers of World War 11 that helped to keep the love of charms popular. While away from their loved one, the men collected charms that were small enough to pack away in their duffle bags. I'm sure that there are charms still dangling from bracelets that can be traced back to those war years.

Before the bracelets became popular, men and women would pick up a pretty stone and carry it with him to bring them luck. Come to think of it, I have a Rune stone that I carry around to remind me that I have to keep balance in my life. Charm bracelets began to appear as far back as the Egyptian times when jewelry was very popular to the influential.

I didn't know if I would find it on Amazon, but I came close. I was visiting my in-laws for the very first time and it was my mother-in-law who got me started on the whole collecting of charms. I found it in a tiny shop in Vancouver, British Columbia and it looked just like this one... but I couldn't afford the gold version. Mine is silver but I wouldn't trade it for the world.

And yes, I will take a photo of it in the coming days to show you my collection of charms. Actually, I will get my daughter to take the photo. She has this flare for capturing great shots that I have never been able to duplicate.

I used to love it when she wore her bracelet. She had a gold charm bracelet that was loaded down with the most gorgeous charms, but my favorite was a tiny tube that contained a replica of a one pound English note. The tube actually opened so that you could draw out the tiny piece of paper.

She too collected charms throughout her life and she had some very unusual pieces. She passed away a few years ago and I have no idea whatever happened to that bracelet, but if I ever do see it again, I will be sure to get a quick photo.

I thought that I would begin featuring "summery" charms that we might want to add to our bracelets. My daughter and I were just talking about bumble bees a few days ago. Apparently there numbers are dwindling and she was wondering what it would take to start up a colony to make honey.

The honey part I like... coming into contact with the bees, not so much. But adding one to my bracelet will remind me of our discussion. It should be interesting to see what she does with the idea.
