Charms and Charm Bracelets
A charm bracelet is an item of jewellery worn around the wrist to carry charms or trinkets, which represent important things in the wearer's life or are just decorative.
Jewelry charms have been in existence for thousands of years; early ones made from shell date back 75,000 years and may have begun as a form of amulet to ward off evil spirits or bad luck. Elaborate jewellery made of precious stones and metals emerged during the age of the Egyptian Pharaohs. It was during this time that the first charm bracelets and necklaces recognisable as such appeared. Charms also were worn in the Dark Ages to represent religious and political convictions or family origins.
In more modern times, Queen Victoria wore charm bracelets that started a fashion among the European nobility. Victorian charm bracelets went from being practical tools to becoming decorative fashion jewellery. Small lockets, glass beads and family crests that hung on bracelets and necklaces were all the rage.
After World War II, soldiers returning from the war brought home charms for bracelets to give to loved ones that had been made by craftsmen local to the area where they were fighting.
Bracelets and charms became immensely popular throughout the 1950s and 1960s and as a popular gift on a girls' 16th or 18th birthday or as a wedding or engagement present. These modern charm bracelets meant that new charms could be added and old ones removed and kept, enabling the owners to change facets of their charm bracelets on a daily basis if required.
