Part of my occupation is working on charter boats, as a deckie, and I have witnessed many charters over the years. I can share with you from experience, that each charter is what you make of it, and if you paying for the time, you want to maximise what you get out of it by being fully prepared! In addition, I go on about 15 charters a year, purely for fun because i love fishing so much! I have built up a large knowledge base of hints, tiups and tricks over the years as an industry player.

Before you embark, theres a good number of must do and must know details, that you should have sorted out before the boat leaves. Deal exclusivley with the skipper, as hes the one who calls the shots!

*The departure time, and the departure location details. Docks can be busy and confusing areas, so get to know where your leaving from well before you go. The skipper will be able to get you out fishing fast, if your punctual.

*Get the skipper to inform you what gear the boat provides and what gear is your responsibility. Fishing gear can deteriorate fast, so to ensure that big one doesnt get away, you want good gear that is well looked after.

*Ask the skipper how far and how long it takes to reach the fishng areas and what speed the boat does. Its best when your taken to the fishing water fast, rather than wasting 6 hours out of the 10 steaming aimlessly!
