Just dropping in to sprinkle a bit of angel dust around here. **blessed**

Again, I'm waaaaaay more concerned with creating a quality lens. I'm really not competing with anyone.

Interesting lens. I often wonder how best to use my time: work hard on an underperforming lens or give up and create a new, better one.
  • The_Book_Garden Nov 6, 2010 @ 8:15 pm | delete
glad you found it interesting Andy! I've more or less become inactive on squidoo for the last few months, though always keep an eye on comments & lensrank of my top 30 or so lenses out of interest. Each month I get a nice sum from squidoo paying back for all the work put in the first 18months of my fascination with squidoo. Currently I average 3-5 lenses in the 2nd tier & about 80+ in the 3rd tier, and as many again outside the tier ranking. Affiliate earnings directly via squidoo usually pay more than the lensranking, just. Though the majority of the earnings come from 3rd tier lenses. I also make from my own affiliate links, rather than squidoo's, about 2-3x more money each month than I do from squidoo. These additional earnings do mainly come from 3rd tier lenses.
There comes a time to walk away and say 'enough! My time is better spent elsewhere!" This was a lesson I practiced lots while making lenses and you will see many of mine are incomplete. Finally I made the decision to walk away from squidoo as the immeadiate return was never worth it, yet over time some lenses have earned me several hundred dollars and continue to earn a few dollars each month. It's also surprising to note which lenses have been the better financial performers!
1 of my lenses only generates 1 or 2 sales every month or so, though the commission is often in the region of $50. Others regular earn me from 50cents to $5 a week. Spending time on squidoo taught me a lot, and the biggest lesson was 'don't sweat the small stuff', or 'you can't polish a turd!'
All the best to you & good luck with your lenses! Thanks for visiting mine & commenting! :)

Very engaging lens! 5* from me!

Interesting article! I'm new here so I still am not quite sure how everything works. I have a fair lensrank on my first lens so far, but I'm not obsessing over it. Thanks for posting this!
  • spirituality Mar 8, 2009 @ 1:54 am | delete
I'm one of those who probably obsesses more about lensrank than I should. It's mainly the money - but the amount gained from top tier payout is probably not worth the fuss.

As one who studies SEO, I really believe it's important. It lets you know about the quality of your work... and gives you that google juice we all want. great lens 5*

Interesting Lens with some great info! Food for thought, I will be looking at lens ranking differently from now on!

    Thank you :-)

InternetJunkie - We have been given assurance that 'payrank' will be calculated on average lensrank for the month soon! Though no date was given. You are far from alone in thinking this to be a fairer system!
  • Aug 19, 2008 @ 2:41 pm | delete
It seems more fair that payrank should be calculated based on the average monthly lensrank than the lensrank at the end of the month.
  • The_Book_Garden Aug 19, 2008 @ 11:34 am | delete
Harry, a high squidoo lensrank will give your lens a higher google 'score'. Though only if it high enough to be in the top 100 of it's category will it get this extra 'google juice'.
  • harryheys Aug 19, 2008 @ 10:13 am | delete
OK I'm new to Squidoo but find this discussion interesting. One thing I am unsure about - if you have high Lensrank does it count more for Google than a lower one?
  • Treasures-By-Brenda Aug 14, 2008 @ 6:03 am | delete
Lens rank is a nice way to follow the progress of a lens but I realize that content is important.

My purpose for Squidooing was originally to drive traffic to my eBay store and I had a very successful July (which I thought was supposed to be a slow month). I haven't checked the eBay stats yet to see if I can say Squidoo was responsible or not for this busy month.

Of course, income from Squidoo and affiliates would be a nice bonus if I can just make that work!

I'm fairly new to squidoo. I've been wondering if lens rank really makes a difference or not.

Not sure I'm convinced one way or another yet, but this is an interesting lens.

I agree that monetizing lenses is going to offer more opportunity for earning money, but not all lenses can easily be turned into money making pages. I don't know how I could do this with my Daily Jokes lenses for example. 5***** for raising some very good points and for putting it together so well.
  • debnet Aug 3, 2008 @ 6:41 am | delete
I enjoy putting quality lenses together. But I really enjoy watching the traffic grow & the lens rank go up :) Guess I'm competitive.
  • The_Book_Garden Aug 1, 2008 @ 3:54 am | delete
    Lizzy,
Instead of spending time promoting lenses you may find much more value in 'monetizing' your lenses just using the squidoo affiliate modules for simplicity. If they are high-ranking they hopefully have traffic to match so turn some of the traffic into customers just by adding some related products from amazon, ebay or cafepress
  • ElizabethJeanAllen Jul 31, 2008 @ 10:58 pm | delete
I focus on writing quality lenses. With that comes a higher lens rank. I should spend more time promoting my lenses but this is a sideline, not my focus. I don't have the time.
    Great discussion.

    Great discussion!

The_Book_Garden, this is a great discussion, but i believe people will still try to game the system at the end of the month. Let's see in the next two months what happens.

Great idea for a lens. I have found the recent discussions on SquidU very interesting. There are some very strong views out there. Do I chase lensrank? No. Do I like it when I get high lens rank? Who doesn't!

"You can't polish a turd." That's classic. Truly classic.

Hi!
Recently I have not had much time to publish on squidoo due to other commitments and distractions, though I do hope you'll look at some of my other...
