The Power of Communication

by Loyalis

"The chat room has been invaluable for swapping ideas about module combinations, lens theory, backlink sources, new tools or sites we could build and a ton of other stuff.

I know that I wouldn't be where I am without the help and support of the chat room.

Maybe chat rooms aren't your thing or forums aren't up your alley. All I can say is that the more you can talk to and bounce ideas off of people trying to accomplish the same things as you are, the more successful you become.

Regular Inmates of Squidoo Chat

There are a few Lensmasters that seem to be logged in all the time - seriously addicted, but always happy to help answer any questions you have.

You may need to hang around for a few minutes before they wake up...

Basic IRC Commands

Here are a few of the commands you can use in the chat room:

  • /me (some text)
Used to 'emote' something, this command prints your name followed by the text.
For example: /me laughs out loud
  • /away (message)
Mark yourself as being away, with an optional message if you wish.
For example: /away gone to lunch
  • /back
...for when you come back after being away.
  • /msg (nickname) (message)
Send a private message to another person.
  • /clear
Wipe the screen clear of all messages.
  • /nick (new nickname)
Change your nickname to a new one.

For more have a look at the IRC Beginner - Commands.

Registering Your Nickname

If you find yourself coming to the Squidoo chat room on a regular basis, you may want to register your nickname. This allows you to take possession of it, and prevent anyone else from using it.

  1. Type the following command and replace your_password with a password that will be easy to remember and replace email@address.com with your correct email address:

    /NickServ register your_password email@address.com

  2. A passcode will be sent to your email@address.com. When you receive it, type the following command to complete registration:

    /msg NickServ confirm passcode

  3. Each time you connect, you must "identify" yourself, using the following command:
(or use the 'login with password' link at the top of the lens)

    /msg NickServ identify your_password

  4. If you are using the full Mibbit version and are registered and logged in, you can add that nick and password to the "My Account" list to be auto-identified.

Other IRC programs will also be able to do this for you.
