Rentals and Real Estate in Chattanooga

Beautiful, Hospitable, Friendly, Historic and Inventive

This is the Walnut Street Bridge over the Tennessee River at downtown Chattanooga. Early every summer, about a mile of the downtown riverfront is closed to vehicle traffic for a nine-day music festival called Riverbend. A couple of the five simultaneously operating music stages are located at spots you can see in this photograph.

But that isn't all. Downtown is also home to the Tennessee Aquarium, an IMAX theatre, the Discovery Museum, an amazing waterfront you have to see to comprehend... and too much more to list in a quick introduction. It's a family friendly city where you'll see parents with young children enjoying special events or just strolling comfortably by the river downtown, even after dark. It's a place of Southern charm and hospitality. It's a medium-sized city with the warm personality of a small town.

It's also a city of makers and movers. An astonishing number of things were invented here or were done here first, then spread across the United States. This is no accident. Chattanooga has a practically ideal logistical location for transporting goods throughout the South---the reason

  • Sherman's march through Georgia was staged here

  • the Trail of Tears began here

  • Volkswagon is building an immense new car factory here (with the first cars due to be produced in September 2011)

  • Amazon is building a huge new distribution center here

The city has a longstanding record of creative thinking. Did you ever wonder where the idea for the National Park system began? Take a look at the Chickamauga Battlefield and you'll recognize the precursor to the Park system. Think downtown was always this well tended and felt this safe? Thirty years ago it was practically worth your life to go downtown after dark. Believe it must always have been this green and lovely? Once upon a time, the EPA rated Chattanooga's air the worst in the country, even worse than Los Angeles. Chattanooga believes in solving problems and always strives to make itself better.

Riverbend Music Festival

Nine nights of music along a mile of magical riverfront

Of all the many festivals and events Chattanooga hosts during the year, the Riverbend Music Festival is the showpiece. For nine nights, about a mile of the riverfront downtown is blocked to vehicle traffic. Five music stages are strategically placed so their sounds don't clash. All five are busy practically all the time every night. If you like jazz, blues and similar music, try the one outside the Hunter Museum at the top of the bluff. If you like folk and alternative music like That One Guy, try the stage under one of the bridges. Country music is usually near the main entrance. The main stage is a specially built 100 foot barge docked at the premier spot along the riverfront.

You don't buy a ticket to Riverbend. You buy a lapel pin which entitles you to attend as many nights of the festival as you want. Check around town for discounts on Riverbend pins. Sometimes the pin also gets you entry or a discount at various attractions around town, too.

On the Saturday night that ends the festival, the final show is the most magnificent fireworks display you can imagine, based on and around one of the bridges across the river. Ever year this includes a Curtain of Fire falling from the bridge, but the rest of the show varies. If you don't want to go to the festival itself, Coolidge Park across the river is also an excellent viewpoint. On either side of the river, you'll be so close that you'll smell the cordite and feel the percussion of the explosions all the way through to your bones.
Riverbend Music Festival
This website tells about the festival every year. Take a look at the acts booked in. It's everything from big names to small bands or solo artists you haven't had a chance to hear before. Every time we go to the festival, we discover some music we like and wouldn't have learned about otherwise.

More About Chattanooga

Gator and Turtle at Tennessee Aquarium

You may be wondering how Chattanooga transformed its downtown from a run-down devastated wreck to one of the premiere riverfront revival stories in the United States. As a standup comedian said at Riverbend one summer, "What did you do? Last time I was here, there were practically chunks of metal in the air!" There certainly aren't any more.

It's a long story, but we'll give you some glimpses. Chattanooga's economy collapsed when its ammunition manufacturing industries closed down after the war in Vietnam. The city decided it wasn't going to be able to attract new businesses and new people as long as its air was thick enough to slice and it was generally a dirty place. Cleanup needed to begin with the air---so how about electric buses? It was such a shame that suitable buses weren't readily available on the market... so Chattanooga helped bring them along.

To encourage use of the buses, Chattanooga made riding them free in the downtown zone. Please don't jaywalk when you don't hear traffic coming. When a downtown bus goes by, all you hear is the tires on the road and a soft whir.

In some difficult neighborhoods, a few police officers moved in. Not just to patrol---they started living there and became part of the neighborhood. People tend to behave better when their neighbor is an officer.

The Tennessee Aquarium is the cornerstone of downtown's renaissance. That's where we took the photo of the gator and turtle. Allow yourself plenty of time for touring it because it's big and too fascinating to simply race through. But don't worry if someone in your family needs to be in a stroller or wheelchair. It's very friendly for those. Want to get a chance to "pet" a sturgeon? This is your chance!

Pay attention to the walkways, benches and statues outside the Aquarium. You'll find small historical notes and markers, and tidbits of Cherokee culture. They are subtle and easy to miss.

Within a few blocks of the Aquarium, you'll find the IMAX theatre and Discovery Museum in one direction, or the Hunter Museum on top of the bluff. Across the river is Coolidge Park, a marvelous place for a summer picnic. Make sure to visit the carousel in the park. There are only about 60 of that type left. This one has been lovingly restored, and all the animals on it have been carved by local artists.

The Chickamauga Battlefield is a little south of Chattanooga. We recommend spending a good while in the visitor's center first---you do want to know about the ancestor of the National Park system, don't you? Then it's time to see the battlefield. It is no accident that this is the best documented of all Civil War battle sites.

Curious? Good! Take your time exploring the area. We'll add more material here as soon as we have some time. We still need to tell you about Rock City, Ruby Falls, the Incline Railway, the Southern Belle riverboat...

Most Stunning Picturebook Featuring Chattanooga

Published by an astronaut's widow

Chattanooga: River City Renaissance (Urban Tapestry Series)

Amazon Price: $3.14 (as of 05/31/2012)Buy Now
Used Price: $3.13

June Scobee Rodgers is the widow of one of the Challenger astronauts. Having remarried, she now lives in Chattanooga. I used to attend a weekly lunch group with the Rodgers. I am amazed that she never mentioned this breathtakingly beautiful coffee table book. It's on our bookshelf and we'd hate to let go of it.

Chattanooga really is as lovely as this book shows. In fact, it's even more engaging now--the riverfront underwent major additions after this book was published, creating even more ways to enjoy yourself (mostly free) downtown, and the Hunter Museum built a massive expansion.

Chattanooga on the Map
If you can't see Signal Mountain at the top and Lookout Mountain at the bottom, adjust the zoom until you can. Then you will be seeing about the right view to encompass most of the range where people in the area live. What you can't see is the time zone boundary. Chattanooga is in the Eastern time zone, and the Central time zone begins just west of the city.
