Affordable point and shoot cameras 2012
Cheap compact cameras and point and shoot cameras definitely have their place and it is easy to see why. This lens is written based on cheap compact cameras and affordable point and shoot cameras. There are hundreds of articles based around expensive, pro spec digital cameras but very few aimed at the lower end of the market. So, if you are looking to buy a cheap compact camera in the near future or if you own a cheap compact camera and want some advice and tips, this lens may well be just what you are looking for.
What is the point of cheap compact cameras?
Photographs are a great reminder of past events and happy times. Taking some time out and flicking through an album of old photographs is an experience that is difficult to explain, but it is a wonderful one. Looking at old photographs is an emotional roller coaster that will make you laugh out loud, wince in pain, cringe with embarrassment and cry, and all in a short space of time.Professional photographers rely on their images to earn money and live, therefore they will demand expensive cameras, lenses and other photographic equipment that will produce pin sharp images that will sell. It is nice to produce photographs that look like they were taken by a professional photographer but not everyone wants this.
There are many people out there who simply want an image as a reminder of a specific event, day or time. These images may be slightly over or under exposed, the colours may not be true to life, some areas may be out of focus, but who really cares? After all, these photographs aren't for sale and the people who actually look at the images are likely to be close family and friends. This type of photography is known as "snap shot" photography and it is very popular. Whilst you can spend a lot of money on a camera to use to take snap shots but there really is no point, especially when you can buy cheap compact cameras that are designed exactly for this purpose.
If you want to take creative photographs, as opposed to snap shots, or want to sell your photographs a cheap point and shoot camera is going to be of no use. However, if all you want is an image to remind you of your vacation, a family event or anything else for that matter a cheap compact camera is going to be just perfect for you.
The advantages of cheap compact cameras
You are not going to produce images of amazing beauty that are going to wow people with a cheap compact camera, but this is obvious. Whilst the image quality may not be up there with digital SLR cameras there are many advantages in owning a cheap compact camera.Whilst you don't want to damage or break your cheap digital camera it is not the end of the world if you do. After all, you can replace it without spending too much money and breaking the bank. Now consider breaking a top of the range digital SLR camera and a professional grade lens. It will cost hundreds, if not thousands of bucks to rectify to sort this out. Doesn't bear thinking about does it?
A cheap compact camera isn't going to create any unwanted attention from potential thieves and pick pockets. There is no market for second hand and used point and shoot cameras, especially if they are cheap new. As a result you are unlikely to get your cheap compact camera stolen or pinched. This doesn't mean you can leave it lying around unattended though as an opportunist may still pinch it for fun. Expensive photography equipment creates a lot of attention, most of which is unwanted, and you really do have to keep a close eye on your photographic equipment when it is worth a few thousand bucks or more.
Cheap compact cameras are small, light and can be taken anywhere. Compare this to big and bulky digital SLR cameras and it is easy to see that cheap compact cameras are far more discreet.
Cheap compact cameras are quick, easy and simple to use and taking a photograph involves turning the camera on, setting the correct automatic mode, focusing on the subject and pressing the shutter button. The whole process takes a matter of seconds. Setting up a digital SLR camera is a lot more difficult and time consuming and by the time a digital SLR is set up the photographic moment and opportunity may well have disappeared.
There are loads of different cheap compact cameras available so there is plenty to choose from. Since there are so many different affordable point and shoot cameras for sale competition between the manufacturers is fierce so it is a buyers' market. This means you can get a compact camera loaded with features for little money.
What is your favourite manufacturer of compact cameras?

There are loads of different compact camera manufacturers and we all have our favourite. So what is your favourite brand of compact camera? If you would like to expand your answer and include the precise model and the reasons why, then please feel free to do so.
Cheap compact camera buying guide
Choosing a cheap compact camera is not an easy task. There are loads of different manufacturers all of which make several different models and the choice is overwhelming. However, when evaluating the best cheap point and shoot camera there are specific features and things you need to look out for.The ISO is the camera's sensitivity to light. In order to get the best quality images you need to shoot at the lowest possible ISO since this creates the least amount of digital noise and artefacts. However, there are times when you have to increase the ISO in order to take the picture, such as in low light conditions. When you buy a cheap digital camera it is best to go for one with a high ISO rating, since this will be more useful in low light than a camera with a lower ISO rating.
In a nutshell mega pixels are the amount of pixels the sensor can put in the image. All things being equal the higher the number of mega pixels the better, but all things aren't equal and there are times when a compact camera can take better quality images than a camera with higher mega pixels. So, when buying a cheap point and shoot camera don't get too hung up on mega pixels and never choose a digital camera purely because it has the highest number of mega pixels.
A flash is used to provide a quick burst of light to illuminate the subject. Some people think a flash is only useful in low light and dark however this is not the case. A flash can be used as a fill light to fill in shadows, which is especially useful when the subject is backlit, such as in the midday sun. When buying an affordable digital camera a built in flash is exceptionally useful and will help create great a photograph in specific situations. Not all cheap point and shoot cameras have a built in flash so you need to keep this in mind.
All digital compact cameras have an LCD screen on the back but not all cheap compact cameras have a view finder. A view finder is useful in bright sunlight when the reflection off the LCD screen can make it difficult to compose the photograph. Having a view finder eradicates this problem. Holding the camera up to your eye to take the image is also steadier than holding the camera at arm's length and taking the photograph which will result in sharper images. A view finder is an excellent feature so it is something you need to think about before buying a cheap compact camera.
Different cheap compact cameras use different lenses. For example, Canon will use their own Canon lenses, Olympus will use their own Olympus lenses and Panasonic use Carl Zeiss lenses. Some lenses are far better than others so you also need to consider this before buying a camera. For example, Carl Zeiss lenses are excellent lenses that are highly regarded and much better than Samsung lenses.
The amount of zoom is something else you need to consider before buying a cheap compact camera. Affordable point and shoot cameras typically have 3 to 5 times zoom, which means the long end of the focal length is anything from 112mm to 135mm. This may not seem like much on paper, but in the world of photography the difference is vast. Some people may argue the longer the zoom the better, but if you prefer taking photographs at shorter focal lengths there is no point in having a 5 times zoom. You will also find that image quality reduces at longer zooms, so it is not always worth it anyhow.
The above features are the most important things to look out for and consider before parting with you hard earned cash and buying a cheap compact camera. Some models have additional features such as red eye elimination, face detection, different metering modes and intelligent modes to name but a few. These additional features are nice, but in the real world they don't mean that much and you should not base your final decision on any of these additional features when buying a cheap compact camera.
How to get the most out of your cheap compact camera
Cheap compact cameras often referred to as "point and shoot" digital cameras have a series of automatic settings and each one is designed for a specific situation. In order to get the best possible image from your compact camera you need to know about the different mode types and how each one works.Cheap compact cameras will typically have a landscape mode, portrait mode, macro mode and night mode. More expensive compact cameras may have additional modes but you are going to have to spend a bit more money to get access to any other modes.
The landscape mode, which often has a mountain icon next to it, is designed to take images of landscapes and seascapes. When your camera is in this mode it will close down the aperture to maximise the depth of field so your photograph is pin sharp from the middle of the frame to the edges. Closing down the aperture will increase the shutter speed, which means you may need to use a tripod or some other support to eliminate camera shake.
The portrait mode, which often has a face icon next to it, is designed to take images of people. When your compact camera is put in portrait mode it will open up the aperture hence decreasing the depth of field, which will put your subject in focus but throw the surroundings out of focus. Opening up the aperture will increase the shutter speed so camera shake will not pose any problems.
Macro mode, which often has a flower icon, is designed to take close up images. When your camera is in this mode the lens changes the way in the focal distance.
Night mode, which often has a moon icon, is designed to take images in low light and at night. When your camera is in this mode it will widen the aperture and will fire the flash when the shutter button is pressed.
Now you know how each mode works and what effects it has on the camera you can now apply it when taking photographs. So, if you want a tack sharp subject and a nice blurred out background you need to set the camera to portrait mode, regardless of whether you are taking images of people or not. Portrait mode is ideal for product photography, car photography, bike photography and the like.
If you want to take a photograph that is in sharp focus throughout the frame you need to set the camera to landscape mode, regardless of what you are photographing. If you want to take a photograph of your children whilst keeping the background in sharp focus you need to use landscape mode.
One of the biggest mistakes people do when taking photographs with a compact camera is to leave the camera in one particular mode and use it all the time. If you think about how your compact camera behaves in each mode and think about the sort of photograph you want to take, and use the appropriate automatic mode, you will instantly see an improvement in your photographs.
