Cheap Domain Names - Just for You!

Here's are some great ways to register cheap domain names for your website or for investment purposes. Have fun with this - I know I had fun writing this lens for you!

Cheap Domain Names - The Bargain Bin

It's like the sale rack at the cd store but more fun.

Every so often I like to peruse the bargain bin at TDNAM.com
This is the auction site for www.GoDaddy.com,
one of the largest domain name registrars in the world.

Closeout names sell for $5, plus approximately $10 for registration. The whole deal comes out at around $15 USD for a domain name that is at least a year old.

Here are some of the names I found in their closeout section. Please forgive me if I made any typos, and just know that as soon as I post this someone else may snap it up so act quickly if you see one you like. If it's gone, don't worry - new names show up on the list all the time so have fun browsing the site.

You don't have to register to browse the names - Just click on "current auctions" (these are not the cheap ones, keep going), then click "see all" and then click the "closeouts" tag. To bid or buy these names you will need to register (free).

Caveat Emptor - I once bought a name from here that was banned from google so you do want to make sure the name is ok before you register it. It's also a good idea to do a quick check to see if the name is trademarked - it's a good rule of thumb not to register trademarked names because they can be taken away.

Cheap Domain Names on eBay

For whatever reason, names on eBay tend to sell for much lower than in other areas. Here are some now.

(Hint: there are thousands of domain names for sale on eBay. Click on one of the names on the list and it will take you to eBay to see more. Warning: some names for sale on ebay are on the racy side so be warned - it's not for children.)

Domain Name History

What was on that domain name you're thinking of registering? Most of the time, there is an easy way to tell. It's called the "wayback machine" and it is part of archive.org. If there was an active site associated with the domain name, the wayback machine is a great way to see what it looked like. If you want to preserve pagerank for a domain name, you can create new content with the same file names as the site had before. That way, if there are inbound links to those pages, you will get traffic for them. Give it a try - it's free.

Special Domain Names for Mobile Phones - .mobi Instead of .com

mobi domain names

There's a new domain name extension on the block, and it's made just for mobile phones. Look for .mobi instead of .com at the end of domain names that are made for iPhone, BlackBerry and any web-enabled mobile phone.

To register your own name, visit GoDaddy.com or your favorite domain name registrar.

For examples of news and developed sites for .mobi, visit the mobiEnthusiast.mobi blog or the mobility.mobi mobi forum.

    About sdtechteacher

Welcome and thanks for visiting my lens. I am a computer and technology trainer and private tutor in San Diego, Californa for children and adults, including small businesses, and not-for-profits on how to increase their business on the web as well as on the ground marketing and public relations. I surf ( a little) and like to have fun with my family.

In order to be truly successful in business today, communication with prospects and customers is two-way, and web 2.0 reflects this fact.

In the classroom, I have my students focus on the technical skills of the programs they are using because there's no reason why they can't learn to run a business out of their dorm rooms when they graduate. For older students (upper elemenary and beyond), this includes all components of a website, including content, html/xhtml, css, hosting, selecting a domain name (or squidoo lens), search engine optimization, permission-based marketing, rss, and logo and banner design.

A great starting place for this next generation is the mobile internet, and I am passionate about .mobi as a TLD (top level domain).

Enjoy the journey with me and welcome aboard!

P.S. If you are new to Squidoo and would like to share your knowledge, get traffic to your blog or site, or make a bit of extra money, you can make your own lens. Click here - it's easy and free.
