Egypt: One of our best-loved destinations continues to captivate.

The land of the Pharaohs has been a firm favourite for British holidaymakers for many years and 2010 looks to be no exception. With its mix of culture and beachside resorts it is a perfect blend. Now is an exciting time to visit Egypt, with the opening of its Northern Mediterranean coast (from Alexandria to the Bedouin town of Sallum on the Libyan border) as well as direct flights to the harbour town of Marsa Matruh, from Gatwick and Manchester. Our fascination with this ancient land is set to grow even greater.

Cairo is immense. Its chaotic nature is enough to send your head into a spin, but it is the perfect place to see air conditioned cars sharing the road with donkey pulled carts.

It is of course home to the pyramids of Giza and the imposing Sphinx that would send you back 4000 years if it wasn't for the cars sharing the scene. Even so, the sheer size of the monuments leaves you in amazement. There are many locals and their camels vying for business and although it can be annoying, they are generally very friendly. A camel ride around the pyramids is a good way to take a breather from the noise that is always evident in the capital, and just take in the history.

Luxor is another popular destination for us British holidaymakers, with the magical Valley Of The Kings (and Queens) being its main draw. Situated immediately opposite, across the Nile River, its monuments, tombs and temples keep visitors coming back again and again.

Cheap flights and bargain package deals are making Egypt's coast a particular favourite for holidaymakers seeking the typical beach holiday. Sharm el-Sheikh and neighbouring Na'ama Bay have become the Marbella of North Africa, with thousands of Brits flocking there each year. The area has plenty of facilities and entertainment, as well as shopping malls and top class hotels. The nearby Red Sea is a central spot for diving enthusiasts. The world's northernmost tropical sea is home to an abundance of marine life and coral reef.

Being a Muslim country, alcohol is not as easy to come by as you may expect. Even in the top hotels, the beers and wines offered on the menu are likely to be of the non- alcoholic variety. Local beers can be brought in street side cafes and sheesha bars, although if you're after a rowdy drunken nightlife scene, you're unlikely to find it here. Areas such as Sharm el-Sheikh have wider availability on the alcohol front.

Women are advised to cover their arms and legs when traveling around Egypt. Although Egyptians are mostly a friendly bunch, it can be frowned upon to dress provocatively and may attract unwanted advances. In tourist areas, such as Giza, the dress code is relaxed, however it is always a good idea to be respectful.

The average flight time from London to Cairo is around six hours and great Cheap Holidays deals are available from many travel operators. With it's sun, sea, sand, culture and fabulous deals, our love affair with this mystical and vibrant country is sure to continue for years to come.
