I Am Tired Of Feeling Ripped Off When I Need Ink Cartridges For My Printer!

I have a young daughter and a small business both of which go through a fair share of ink. I began realizing that I was spending more for my ink each month than I did for either printer in total. This just didn't sit well with me. There has to be a way to save money on ink cartridges besides the iffy quality of ink refills.

Is It The Printer Choice Or Is It The Inkjet Cartridge Or Both?

Cost Of Ownership, Quality, and Performance Of Printers.

What is the true cost of ownership of a color printer?
The true cost of ownership of a color printer is a topic that the printer manufacturers do not explain or make easy to understand. In fact by looking into this topic I found that it seems to almost be purposely misleading. The rule of thumb is that the cheaper the printer, the more expensive the disposable costs for refills and so on.

Lets look at this example of a $55 inkjet model with black ink costing $19. But with a yield of 170 pages per cartridge:

Seven pages a day (very conservative amount) times 300 days equals 2,100 pages -- an ink bill of $235.60 per year. If you own the printer for three years, the cost of cartridges comes to more than $700 or about 13 times the original cost of the printer.

Let's say you print 50 pages a day, 300 days a year. Using the above example, that equates to printing 15,000 pages annually. At that same rate, your annual ink cartridge bill would total nearly $1600.00

Now let's look at a Brother HL-2270 mono laser printer model that costs $149.00 with ink (toner) costing $78 with a yield of 2700 pages per cartridge:

Seven pages a day (very conservative amount) times 300 days equals 2,100 pages -- an ink bill of $60.06 per year. If you own the printer for three years, the cost of cartridges comes to $180.18 just slightly higher than the original cost of the printer.

Let's say you print 50 pages a day, 300 days a year. Using the above example, that equates to printing 15,000 pages annually. At that same rate, your annual ink cartridge bill would total just over $400.00.

Inkjet Printer Plus Cost Of Ink For One Year At 7 Pages Per Day: $285
Laser Printer Plus Cost Of Ink For One Year At 7 Pages Per Day:$227

Inkjet Printer Plus Cost Of Ink For One Year At 50 Pages Per Day:$1655
Laser Printer Plus Cost Of Ink For One Year At 50 Pages Per Day:$549 (LOOK AT THE DIFFERENCE)

And it isn't just cost that conspires against ink jets. They usually won't print pages as fast as laser printers, although some recent high-end models are catching up. Inkjet cartridge printers can also be a major hassle generally having more problems. The statistics indicate that inkjet printers are inundated with cartridge-error messages when the cartridges are perfectly fine, or have the machine suddenly go crazy and spit out meaningless characters or text in an endless stream. The inkjet printers are also set up in a way that makes it difficult to minimize the amount of ink they use. It appears they're designed to make you use more ink than you need to with no way to default to "draft quality" just offering a "speed quality".

But this still doesn't fully answer my question. How can I save money on the printers I currently have? One inkjet and one laser printer.

What Type Of Ink To Purchase For My Inkjet Printer

Refilled Ink? Compatible Ink? OEM or Brand Ink?

UGH Inkjet Cartridge Headaches

Let's get right to the point. I tried ink cartridge refills and it was a disaster. I purchased the ink cartridge refills from a local Cartridge World store. I had a problem right off the bat. I inserted the refilled inkjet cartridge and right away the ink started to leak. This caused a mess in the printer. If you have ever had to clean up ink from an ink cartridge you know that this is not fun at all! Cartridge World gladly exchanged the defective inkjet cartridge however that didn't help clean my printer and wasted a good bit of my time. The next thing I noticed was that the refilled inkjet cartridge did not last very long. The price was very low to purchase the ink refill. I decided to get one more and test it. I printed what to me was an average page of text with it, noted the pages and then ran the same test with the OEM cartridge that I purchased from Office Depot. The OEM cartridge printed 240 pages with no failure. That is 90 more than the inkjet refill cartridge printed.

Some quick simple math and I ended up saving only 5% overall by purchasing the inkjet refill from Cartridge World. With the issues I encountered in my opinion it is not worth it for a 5% savings...

Next I tried a compatible cartridge that I purchased from an online retailer Print Green USA, Inc. The inkjet cartridge was nearly the same price as the Cartridge World refill cartridge. I ran the same test with the Print Green USA ink cartridge and I got 229 pages printed. There were no errors with this cartridge. The savings after considering the 11 page yield difference amounted to over 60%! Just to be sure I tested one more OEM cartridge and another Print Green USA cartridge. This time the Print Green USA cartridge printed 238 pages and the OEM cartridge printed 244. No failures from either ink cartridge.

From the above I conclude that buying a compatible inkjet cartridge is the best option, followed by an OEM or Brand cartridge and last a refilled inkjet cartridge.

Now what about laser??? I found the same rule applies above except that the compatible laser toner cartridges actually outperformed the OEM or Brand toner cartridges. The refilled cartridge from Cartridge World again came up far short on the page yield and the price was again very similar to the compatible cartridge that I purchased from Print Green USA. Are all compatible cartridges this good? I am not sure. I am going to purchase some compatible cartridges from a couple of other retailers and I will write about those results soon.

I hope you learned something from this. How to be frugal in your ink is definitely a lesson. Also that the ink manufacturers have manipulated the market quite a bit...

Til next time...

Feel free to try the FOCUS brand ink cartridges that we market and write on their performance. They are offered with a one year warranty and free shipping. Concerning those nasty refill kits - you were dead-on, on their performance issues. One of the problems is that the casing is never cleaned out properly and you never know if the ink they insert is going to have a negative reaction with the ink left behind.

Thank You for the compliment. I feel people should be informed about the inkjet and laser printer manufacturer tactics. Ink cartridges and laser toner don't have to be expensive.

If you do not need or want the money from recycling, most places also allow you to allot the money to a charity, which can increase your business's public relations if this is widely publicized.

. Many ink cartridge recycling services need cartridges, so they are willing to pay people for used ink.

Normally you have to send the cartridge to them, or they may offer a pickup service for people with a lot of cartridges.

These cartridges can present a big problem for the environment, they can be hard to get rid of and they certainly take up a lot of room.
