When ipod speakers were first released, everybody were pretty excited about the idea of a low-priced, pocket-sized speaker system with just enough horsepower for two, or maybe three person, to listen to.

Each of these speakers is placed carefully on top of each ipod. The iPods could even stand up while the speakers were plugged in.

But then, the recent changes made to ipod intercepted what seem to be an amazing accessory. One such change is the decision of Apple to place iPod nano's headphone port at the bottom. 5G's port was also transferred to its far right side. But Gear4 took up the challenge of making ipod speakers that can work the different ipods. Thus PocketParty V2. Gear4 uses the same universal, striking white or black-colored chassis, kept up the same price point, and made the sounds the same.

The ipod speaker includes a simple on-off switch that is mounted on the bottom side. It also uses one AA battery for an estimated playback of 10 hours.

But then, problems were encountered. PocketParty V2 connects to an iPod's Dock Connector port rather than the usual headphone port. This basically means that it should always be mounted on an iPod's bottom rather than its top.

This would not have been a problem if only Gear4 repeated the smart move it made with PocketParty for iPod nano, by stabilizing the speakers' bottom so that an iPod could be made to stand up even if there is a speaker attached.

Regrettably, they did not. The solution was to lay iPods down on their backs when the ipod speakers were connected.

This would have been a good idea if only you do not have to twist your neck to see the screen of the ipod. But of course, many people are no too keen about that and is agreeable in their views that the first ipod speakers made were far better and superior.

The second problem is that connecting to an iPod's Dock Connector has a limitation. You cannot use the iPod's controls to change the Dock Connector's output volume the way it is done with the headphone port.

Almost every company with a Dock Connector audio accessory includes dynamic volume controls. Gear4 do not have one. In its place, it mounts a small two-position switch on V2's back, labeled with plus and minus marks.
"Minus" is low volume, which is about 70% on the iPod's volume slider. And "Plus" is high, 100%, volume. It seems that there is nothing in between these two.

The most surprising and third problem is the same one that was seen in other ipod speakers of the past year. Strangely, PocketParty V2. iPod's left and right stereo channels are reversed.

The one and only reason why V2 do not rate lower is that expectations were already vanished with regards to pocket speaker systems.

Bottom line, if you ever need a speaker system for your ipod, PocketParty V2 is a good choice. Only do not try to compare them with the early designs.

If ever you are in need of an ipod speaker, it would be better to choose the ones that is put on top of your ipod. But do not lose hope yet. Maybe in the future, better ipod speakers will be created so you can enjoy the unique experience of listening to a speaker attached to your ipod.
