Metallica originated in Los Angeles, California back in 1981. That year Lars Ulrich posted an advertisement in the local newspaper and James Hetfield responded to it. Kirk Hammett joined the band in 1983. Robert Trujillo, a bass guitar player was a member since 2003.

There were too other members, such as Dave Mustaine, a lead guitarist, who left Metallica and founded the Megadeth band. Metallica had had also three other bassists: Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted. Rob Rock had been their producer for about 13 years and all Metallica albums between 1990 and 2003 were produced by him. He was also a temporary bassist when Newsted left the band.

Their album 'Master of Puppets' released in 1986 brought them enormous number of fans in underground community and was called one of the most influential albums in the history of heavy metal by critics.

Metallica's eponymous fifth album, which is also known as 'The Black Album' brought great commercial success to the band. The album debuted on the Billboard 200 at the number one place. After the release the Metallica band's music turned in more mainstream audience oriented product.
