Cheap Plastic Dinosaurs: A parent's review

This is my review of inexpensive plastic dinosaurs.
My son is five now, but his all time favorite toys have been those inexpensive plastic dinosaurs. I do not know how many of these toys we have, but it's a bunch.
He made this decision all by himself before he was two. The first time we saw a dinosaur in the store he wanted one. I figured why not. I had no idea that we would end up with an entire collection.
At this point you are probably thinking those are not great learning toys, but they are. These toys held his attention and we used them learn words, colors, counting and most important, we learned how to use our imagination.
His interest in these simple toys led to books and stories about dinosaurs that has helped him, and me, become quite knowledgeable about dinosaurs. He can tell what kind of dinosaurs they are, and most of time what they ate, and he what era they lived in.
I knew he was paying attention the other day when I was painting a landscape and asked him what it looked like. He told me, I was painting the Jurassic Period! I know it sounds silly, but I was proud of him.
From a mom stand point I liked these toys because they are reasonably safe. No small parts, can be picked up and displayed easily. If they get dirty I just throw them in the sink and give them a good washing. They can be be taken and played with anywhere. Inside, outside, and the bathtub or pool.
All in all they have been the best toy, especially for the money.

Learning With dinosaurs
One of the things we would do is to count the dinosaurs. Then we would count the dinosaurs in Spanish. Another game is to count the dinosaurs feet, eyes, nose, tail etc. What colors are the dinosaur? Which dinosaur is bigger, and which is smaller. Most of this sounds so too simple, but has been very effective in teaching basic skills, because my son is interested in dinosaurs it was fun for him learn.
We then progressed from basic counting and colors to names of the dinosaurs, which can be challenging. Not so much for him, but for me! How do they come up with some of those names? For this we had to enlist the help of Barnes and Noble.....lol. I found a couple of great books that had pictures and information about each dinosaur.
One of the books is callled: Visual Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs and the other is: Visual Dictionary of Animals. Jed likes the dictionary of animals better than the other. (It has more vibrant pictures and less info.) The dictionary of animals is still his favorite book.

One Reason I Love These Toys
Dinosaurs are quiet, and can be taken anywhere! Inside, outside, in the car, the store,or anywhere else.
Not All Kids Like Noise!
I just wanted to add, that my little boy does not like toys that make a lot of noise. He has not liked them from the beginning. So, we do not have many electronic siren type toys. It is not always easy to find toys now, that do not make some kind of sound.
I think this is one reason he loves these dinosaurs so much. He has received many gifts from friends and family that make noise, and really never plays with them. He may turn them on, but never over a couple of minutes.
If your little one has sensitive hearing they may appreciate or quieter toy. ( I honestly think the noisy ones, give him a headache).
That is why I keep emphasizing that these toys are quiet. The noise does not bother me, but it sure does him.

- I think any toy can be used for learning. It's all about what you do with the toy. It's definitely easier to teach a child something they are excited about. Very cool lens.

- Real personal touch with this review. We had lots of these little toys too but I never thought of all of the fun activities you could do with them.

- Dinosaurs were one of my grandkids favorite toy also....but I never would have thought of the point you made about being "quiet" for the child...me (the grandmother yes). That is a good point about the electronic toys...and it seems most toys these days take batteries and make noise.

- Oh! Just about everything has some kind of batteries in it now, and he dislikes most of it.My Aunt got him a Buzz Light Year that would say," To infinitey and beyond!" He absolutely hated it so much I give it away. He would just scream and cry everytime that thing said something.
