How to Buy a Snowboard

Basic Snowboard Buying Guide

Buying a snowboard isn't just as simple as going out to get the first one that you see. In fact, with the number of different types of snowboards on the market, it can be quite dauting to choose the best snowboard for you and your needs.

A good place to start when shopping for a snowboard would be to address your needs. The main factors that will determine your choice include your height, weight, foot size and riding style.

Riding styles can be divided into three rough categories: All Mountain (Freeride), Freestyle (Technical) and Carve/Alpine.

All Mountain (Freeride) style is designed for people that will be using the whole mountain. This can include catching air, carving, and pretty much about anything else you would like to do with your snowbaord. Basically, this type of board allows you the freedom to do everything from boarding down the slopes to doing tricks - it is essentially a generalized type of board.

Freestyle (Technical) riding involves jumps, tricks, rail sliding and tearing it up. Usually technical freestyle riders will be found in parks or near a halfpipe. Most of the people that come over from skateboarding, inline skating or BMX usually prefer this riding style. It is also a favorite of beginners as well.

Carve/Alpine riding puts speed and deep turning together to take full advantage of what the mountains can offer. They are continuously transitioning from one turn to the next - it is all about hard carving and speed. Typically hard-core skiiers tend towards this style of snowboarding as it is very similar to what they are used to.

Once you have determined your riding style, your snowbaord shopping process should be relatively easy.
