Your Search For Cheap Airfare is Over

Those people you heard of saying they got extremely cheap ticket flights were not lying. Did they just get lucky? I don't think so, I think they know exactly how to look for those amazing airfare deals, and that is because they learned what you are about to learn in this lens. I know how frustrating it may be to come back home from vacations and hear your neighbor bragging about how cheap he managed to get his flight. Airline flight pricing may be confusing and frustrating, but this lens will guide you through airfare madness to assure that next time, you are the one with the cheapest flight!

Understanding Airfare Madness

Just in case you want to understand it..you don´t need to in order to get cheap flights!

Why in the world does a one-way flight have the same price as a round-trip ticket? Why are prices changing all the time? Or why is it cheaper sometimes to take three different flights from LA to Atlanta instead of flying straight to the Atlanta Airport? Well, I will make my attempt of explaining airfare madness.

Airlines use several central reservation systems to fill their seats and adjust their pricing based on the demand for each flight. These systems are called Apollo, Sabre, WorldSpan and Galileo. The more the demand for a certain flight, the more expensive it gets, well that´s simple and kind of obvious but the thing is that every minute airlines are trying to fill their empty seats, and every minute demand for flights changes. Therefore, fares are also changing every minute, and new cheap ticket flights are released all the time!

So why is it so hard to keep track of prices? Several reasons:

1. These systems I just talked about are updated in different times, and they often provide different fares because they use different procedures and algorithms to search for fares, giving agencies and airlines continuously changing information at different points in time (yes, I will tell you where is the right place to search).

2. Competition between airlines can make a certain flight drop 40% just because several hours before, the competitor dropped their fares by 35%.

3. Supply and demand for flights changes ALL the time - especially in a crazy economy%u2026

4. Airlines try to desperately fill their planes even at last minute (will expand more on this). ; )

5. Some airports have higher demand and are more expensive than others. This in part, explains why going directly to big cities is often more expensive than flying to smaller cities before getting to the big city (will expand more on the extra tricks module).
All these factors play in the on going airfare game, so this takes us to another question: How can you make those cheap ticket flights yours?

6. Airlines like to make sure you will fly with them on your way back, so they will ALWAYS give you a better deal in a round-trip than in a one-way.

So, where can I find Cheap Ticket Flights?

Here it is - a simple secret that will give you the key to cheap flights whenever you want them. Remember those systems that airlines use to calculate airfares, and that I talked about at the beginning of this lens? Well, the reason I mentioned those is because the Internet now gives you access to those systems that search for cheap ticket flights 24/7.

Some other useful airfare tricks ; )

1. Be flexible on dates. Instead of asking for flights on a certain date, ask for the cheapest flight on a certain date range. This is just common sense - being flexible with dates will allow you to choose among more flights and most probably cheaper ones! Hint: cheapest dates to fly are typically in the winter, obviously excluding Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Year's time range. Trying to schedule flights during cold season is usually a good deal.

2. Be also flexible on flight time, this will also increase your chances of getting a cheaper fare. This is basic supply and demand (no one wants take a 1 a.m. flight to arrive at 5 a.m).

3. Start looking for flights as soon as possible. I would say that starting to search a month in anticipation would be ideal. A lot of deals require you to make your reservation at least 21 days before the flight. Yes, it is also true that you may find amazing last minute deals that can be a lot cheaper, and as I said before in this lense, you can search for those in the website I recommended. ; )

4. Check Check Check!. A full plane may add discount seats, so it never hurts to check for these even after the seats are taken.

5. Special Discounts. Are you a student? A senior citizen? Ask for these discounts!

6. Secondary Airports. A trick I always use! Many times a flight to a secondary airport at a nearby city will be a lot cheaper! If you are going to Miami for example, you might get lucky flying into a smaller Airport then MIA just an hour or two hours away by car from it.

7. Round Trips: They usually cost as much as one-way trips so if you are coming back, it is always cheaper to know when!

8. Travel clubs. Consider joining if you are going to travel more than twice a year. It may be beneficial in the long run.

9. Mid-weekday flights. Simple, Fridays and Mondays are the most expensive days to fly. Weekends have higher demand, so Tuesdays and Wednesdays are cheaper days to fly. Have this in mind when scheduling your vacations. Another thing, staying overnight on a Saturday can be a money saver move, this is because you will get charged an excursion rate, instead of a business rate.

10. Reputable consolidators. Consolidator are intermediaries between airlines and travelers. Different from Travel agencies, they buy tickets at discount rates and then sell them to final buyers. Their rates, are often lower, so you can benefit from them. A god way to find consolidators is to look for the small advertisements with 800 numbers they place in the travel section of any metropolitan newspaper, but be careful, only look for reputable consolidators that you know will be there the next day!
