Crazy in Love

Valentine's Day is a great day to honor your sweetie with a nice gift. But it's also the day that candy stores and florists jack up their prices in anticipation of the rush.

Don't feel you have to give an expensive present or nothing at all. You can give your sweetheart a nice romantic Valentine gift that says you love her but stay within budget at the same time.

The Stuffed Animal

To have and to hold

Ok, it's been done before. But there's a reason the stuffed bear or kitty is still a favorite Valentine's Day gift. It's cute and adorable and you can hug it and snuggle it when your loved one is away. Not only that, but there are even a few ways to glam it up just a little bit!

Put a single rose between its paws or stick in a handwritten love note from you. It's all you really need to make the day magical.

Come on, how can you resist that cute little face?

The Picnic

Swoon her with food

Gourmet Picnic Basket

Surprise your partner with a picnic. If you live in a climate where it's bearable outside in February, you're in luck.

Pack a gourmet picnic basket for your sweetheart that involves all of his or her favorite foods.

Tuck in a bottle of wine or non-alcoholic cider, bring some nice wine glasses and a tablecloth or blanket to sit on, and your Valentine's Day is off to a great start.

Most importantly, don't forget to tell them that you love them.

Faux Diamonds

The next best thing

If you can't afford the real thing, go for fake. Diamonds are now being made in a simulant that looks just like the real thing and in some cases even better. You can find them online everywhere under "diamonique" or "diamond simulant." You'll be surprised at the large selection and at how large a stone you can get when you're shopping faux. Look for rings or bracelets that are done in sterling silver with a platinum or gold overlay. It's the real thing next to the skin and it won't tarnish. Choose an engagement type style that she'll love and promise her a genuine diamond ring in the future. No one at all will ever be able to tell the difference unless you tell them. (Tell her, of course, but no one else if you prefer to keep it a secret.)

A Meal Cooked By You

Dare to step in the kitchen

If you've never once gone into the kitchen to whip up a feast, now's your big chance to impress her or him. Get out the pots and pans and find some recipes that you can cook online. It doesn't have to be expensive. Pasta and salad can be romantic when you serve it via candlelight. Or, you can have food shipped to you like lobster tails that you only have to stick in the oven. Or you can order a few prime rib steaks that you only have to grill.

Many mail order catalogs and online stores offer next day shipping so your food will arrive fast and you can cook it up on Valentine's Day. Just realize that the prices are going to be higher on and around Valentine's Day, so order in January for a late January delivery and freeze your food until you need it. Oh, and don't forget the Valentine's Day chocolate.

A Personalized Bottle of Wine

Love drunk

Valentine Wine Gift Basket

Make a label for a bottle of wine that she loves. It could include a marriage proposal (how cute would that be!) or a love note that tells her how special she is.

Replace the old label (paste yours with a glue stick right over it) with your label and she'll be surprised and delighted.

Another way to go, is to order her a wine gift basket. It can come with chocolates, and lots of other good items that she will love. Plus, these aren't as expensive as you'd think that they'd be.

If I lived in a warmer climate, I'd love my husband to pack up a picnic and take me to a park or beach for a picnic. Sounds romantic:)

My husband loves to get me a corny stuffed animal that either moves and/or sings. Now that we have kids, I usually let them have it after Valentine's Day. It's become kind of a sweet tradition, although I'd rather have dinner and chocolates too!
