Consider a Travel Package
You can save BIG by booking airfare with a hotel or motel
I have this mistake myself too many times. Not checking to see if combining my plane tickets with lodging (or even a car rental) could save me money overall. The bottom line is, that this is a good travel strategy. Not only can you check the combo prices on travel sites like Expedia, Orbitz and Travelocity, but you can also check by typing "Disneyland package", or "Anaheim travel package" into Google. This is also an effective strategy if you going on a resort vacation - put the name of the resort with "package" and search.
A Travel Package Example Savings
Cheap airfrare to Anaheim is just part of the equation
So you want to dip your toes in the Pacific, or hang with Mickey and Goofy, or do any one of a million different things Southern California has to offer? Doing if all for less money appeals to everyone. An airfare with hotel combo can definitely save you over purchasing these items separately.
In early June of 2009 I checked on airline tickets and lodging for a trip to Anaheim. Arrival date was Sept. 8, (Tues.) and flying back home on Sept. 12, (Sat.) This makes it a 5 day - 4 night trip. Here is what I discovered . . .
Airline & Room Booked Separately
Flying out of Denver, CO and landing in Anaheim at John Wayne Airport in Orange County. 2 Round trip airline tickets were $179 per person, taxes and fees included - no allowance for any additional baggage charges. I then called the Atrium Hotel and got a room quote of $109.00 per night + taxes for 2 adults. That put me at 4 nights lodging for $436 (tax not incl.) + $358 for airfare. Total booking, separate flight and room for 2 = $794.00.
Booked as a Package - saved hundreds
The EXACT same trip, when booked as air and room combo - staying at the Atrium Hotel. Travel package price from Orbitz = $582.00 a savings of roughly $212.00. There is a little bit of "play" in the final numbers because of variables on room taxes, possible luggage fees, etc.
Because there are substantial savings booking packages,
here's another good place to check for deals...
Ever Heard of a 'Ticket Consolidator'?
Check online or in the classified ads of larger newspapers
Here's one place that very few people ever look for airfare deals."Ticket Consolidators". Look for them online or in the classified as section of major newspapers. These wholesalers (sometimes called bucket shops'), can run 30-40% cheaper than buying direct from airlines.
How it works - Consolidators buy blocks of seats from airlines and then resell them. The tickets are usually restricted; no special meals, no changes, no transfers, no refunds, etc. The best opportunity to save money with a consolidator ticket is on long flights, especially international flights.
If you're considering an overseas or an around-the-world trip it's a smart move to check out a consolidator. One thing to consider, consolidators don't have tickets for resale until a month or two before the flight, which means you probably won't be able to buy your tickets very far in advance.
