Airsoft guns are more than just mere kids toys however. Some of the more expensive models are designed to be just like the original weapon in every possible way (except of course that it fires plastic bbs instead of a 5.56 or 7.62 round!) and the push to make airsoft guns as authentic as possible has been very rewarding for airsoft fans everywhere.

Most airsoft guns fire standard 6mm bbs that are available in light, medium and heavyweight grades to suit all shooting styles. Paintball and glow in the dark bbs are also available so you can add a lot of variety to your shooting.

Choosing An Airsoft Handgun

Airsoft handguns aren't kids toys and this is something worth remembering. They look far too realistic and are capable of causing serious eye injury if left in the hands of minors - a police officer might have a very hard time telling an airsoft handgun from the real thing at a distance. Airsoft handguns are, however, the perfect "toy" for adult gun enthusiasts. These small guns use a small amount of air to fire a small plastic pellet with a fairly high degree of accuracy.

The power ranges from one airsoft handgun to the next but you're looking at the average handgun delivering anywhere from 180 to 300 feet per second. This is more than powerful enough for backyard plinking yet not powerful enough to cause any harm to humans or animals.

Cheap Airsoft Guns - Good or Bad

- Are there cheap airsoft guns on the market?

Are there cheap airsoft guns on the market? Of course but not every airsoft gun is cheap. In order of expense spring powered guns are cheapest simply because they rely on basic mechanics to fire the pellet from the pistol, shotgun or rifle. These guns are all single shot meaning you have to cock the firearm each time you wish to fire a single shot. This is ok for when you're starting off but it can get tiring cocking the gun each time to fire.

Next up on the list are the gas airsoft guns. These have a more complicated firing mechanism and you have the added expense of refilling them with gas. You can buy separate recharging pumps but they can be fiddly to use and lack power overall because you're normally foced to carry the air tank around with you. Gas and gas blowback guns can be automatic but run out of the gas very quickly which can take away from the fun. That being said they're great fun to play with either way and remarkably accurate.

Last but not least are the electric airsoft guns. These models are also known as AEG (Airsoft Electric Gun) and are the top of the heap as regards the airsoft gun range. Inside each electric airsoft gun is a powerful little motor. AEGs still feature a spring but one that's controlled by a motor which allows high speed automatic fire. The neat thing about the electric airsoft guns is that they're available in both full size and mini models.

Both the gas and AEG airsoft guns can be used for paintball battles but be aware that an ink pellet jamming inside one of these guns can cause a fair amount of damage if it leaks inside. The ink can clog the entire firing mechanism.

Some shoppers focus on the word cheap far too often. What should be foremost in your mind is value for money. There are airsoft guns that cost a little over $20. This doesn't make them cheap - they're simply great value for money. Even looking at the higher end AEG and gas blowback airsoft models they retail in the low hundreds - which isn't cheap but great value for money considering you're purchasing a high quality, lifesize airsoft military replica that will be the envy of every single on of your friends. Some of those airsoft guns might seem like toys but don't feel like toys when you get to feel their real weight.
