Here are a few quality mics for cheap

This continues our discussion on cheap recording methods & gear (see the link list for other topics).

There are a lot of things that make a difference in the quality of our home recordings. Some day I'll list them all but this lens is about microphones. More specifically, microphones you should get even if you don't have money for microphones.

What's that you say? You can't afford decent quality condenser mics? The MOST expensive of my go-to mics cost $300 bucks. Do my recordings sound like "Rumours'?

No. Do they sound a helluva lot better? YES YES YES!

5 CHEAP mics worth owning

I recommend these mics because I own and use them. And I use them in nearly every recording I make.
MXL Anniversary Mic Combo
You can't beat this for the price. 2 VERY adequate mics for under a hundred bucks. And here's something else - they're fully guaranteed for a full year. A true bargain for this set.
MXLV69
My wife bought me this mic (in a different retail configuration) for my 40th birthday. GREAT for some voices & acoustic instruments. Very brittle on the top end so not great for high volume applications.
Audix D6
The D6 is perfect for kick drum and anything that rumbles. It's built like a tank and more than once was the perfect solution.
Shure SM 57
Really the ONLY mic that's perfect for any situation. It's the standard for studio & live situations. Old reliable. If you record you need at least one of these, so save up junior!
CAD C195 handheld vocal mic
The CAD C195 is a superior low-noise, electret condenser cardioid microphone designed for professional vocalists and musicians. Free shipping!

Thanks for posting these. I recently picked up an AKG 170 pencil mic. It sounds slightly better than its MXL 991; by better I found it had a warmer tone and seemed to filter out some of the string noise on acoustic recordings. Again, a helpful page.

Nice article on some great equipment. My home studio is getting ready for a better mic for vocals. Thanks for posting this.

The Samson C02 is good for recording acoustic guitars, just ok on female vocals. I got a pair for about $100. The Samson C01U is a decent USB mic, not a very hot signal, but good sound on vocals and acoustic guitars.
