Tata Nano - The Peoples Car

Tata Nano

Aptly named the nano, this egg shaped car on four wheels, measures 3.1meters in length, 1.5meters width and 1.6meters in height. The body is sheet metal and all aluminium two cylinder engine is mounted in the rear (like the old volkswagen beetle).

Indian familyThis very basic car (it has one windshield wiper, the engine is comparable to a commercial mower and no radio or a/c in the base version) is aimed at the two wheel owners in India who often use them as the family vehicle. Tata claims this compact car can seat four people comfortably. However the storage space is limited. The trunk in the front of the vehicle is big enough for a duffel bag. >> Explore More ...

The tiny Tata Nano had its share of controversies. First there were vigorous protests over the eviction of farmers near Kolkota where the car factory is located. Now after the launch, there is a worry about the enviornment impact over thousands of very affordable Nanos coming on the road and if the already overburdened infrastructure can handle so many more cars.

Ratan Tata has sought to address such concerns by pointing out that the Nano averages 50 miles to a gallon and passes the strict euro emission standards. Also in the first year only about 250,000 Nanos will be made.
It will be interesting to wait and see what transformative effect this car has on the mobility of Indians.

Bajaj Lite Even in this bottom segment of the car market, Nano will have some competition in India. Bajaj in collaboration with Renault-Nissan has already revealed its "Lite" concept car. Though not quite as cheap as Nano it will likely be one of its main competitor. Very likely other auto manufacturers especially Suzuki and Hyundai will also join in. >>Read More...
