I really love red wine. I'm no snob, but there are definitely things I like and things I don't like. I'm a grad student, so the wine budget is almost non-existent and I've started trying some new and interesting things. I've gotten really lucky with red wines under about $20 a bottle lately, and I'd like to share my opinions with you and I'd love to hear of any ideas anyone else might have.

Got this at the BevMo 5 cent sale in an attempt to change a friend's mind about whether or not she liked Syrah. She liked it so much we ended up going back for more the next week. It's full and spicy but smooth and not too sweet.0 points

This wine is made from grapes grown on gnarly old growth vines in Lodi, CA, and you can taste the earth and the history in this excellent bottle of Zinfandel. Full bodied with a strong flavor, but exceptionally smooth finish and a taste that lingers on the palette. This is a regular at our house and can be purchased for less than $10 at more grocery stores.0 points

This has to be my favorite bottle of wine. It's also not cheap, at about $60 a bottle, but it is a sure-fire hit. It blows me away every time I drink it. This is the smoothest wine I've ever had the pleasure of drinking.0 points

Not a cheap wine at all, in fact, it's one of the most expensive bottles you can buy. My fiancee bought it on a splurge, and I have only one thing to say: Don't waste your money. All we could taste was alcohol. For such a highly regarded and enormously expensive wine, we were sorely disappointed.0 points

After the great luck with the Elena Syrah, we tried another BevMo recommendation, the Shiloh Road Syrah. The wine was good, but so try it almost hurt your tongue. We drank it alternating between the wine and a glass of water, which isn't really such a bad thing in the end. Drinkable, but I wouldn't buy it again.0 points

I've loved this wine when you used to be able to get it for $8 per bottle. Now that more people know about it, it's creeping up to $15 - $20 a bottle, which is a little pricey, I feel. But it's still a solid bottle of Cab with the added benefit of organic grapes.0 points

On the pricey end of "cheap" at $18-$20 a bottle, but widely available in most grocery stores. It's a tasty wine and a sure crowd pleaser if you want something (relatively) inexpensive to take to a dinner party with all of your non-grad-student friends.0 points
