I have a scan gauge in my 97 geo metro that can read engine codes as well. It has saved me more money that anything else on my car.

This is a very helpful lens, especially for those of us who are mechanically challenged. ~~Blessed~~

I'm guilty of "the light" because I didn't shut my gas cap fully. I thought the car was gonna blow!

If I had a dollar for every time a customer had either a loose gas cap or a worn gas cap causing a check engine light to come on, I could have retired a long time ago. The gas cap is the FIRST think I check. You have some great advice regarding what to do when you notice your check engine light is on. Also, some vehicles take 30 minutes of disconnected battery time before the light will go off, but as you quite rightly noted this is a temporary measure, and you need to be sure that you do not have a SERIOUS problem before doing this. Credibility: My partner is a dealer/broker, and I was the Ops Mgr of a Dealership up until 2 years ago.

You can get it checked for free at AutoZone (someone told me O'Rielly's Auto Parts will also check it free). At least that way you'll know what it is. SOme problems that a re cheap to fix if caught early can turn very expensive if you let them go too long.
